    The Impact of Cannabinoids on Anesthesia Management

    The body of evidence regarding cannabinoid consumption and anesthetic implications lacked enough research to support any conclusive recommendations but did bring attention to several concerns. The following details surrounding a patient’s cannabinoid use could have a significant impact on the anticipated physiological responses seen during the perioperative period: cannabinoid formulation, concentration, routes of use, regularity/chronicity of use, and time/dose of last use. Depending on those details, a patient could exhibit tachycardia, bradycardia, hypertension, hypotension, arrhythmias, bronchodilation, bronchoconstriction, or excess secretions. Additionally, there are concerns for an increased risk of perioperative myocardial infarction (MI) or cerebrovascular accident (CVA), higher pain scores, higher opioid requirements, and airway hyperreactivity or edema. While the literature correlates cannabinoid use to the mentioned complications, the details and circumstances of these complications are still unexplored. Ascertaining the appropriate interventions for both preventing and managing perioperative complications in cannabinoid users is another area of focus necessary for future research. There are little to no studies into the interactions of anesthetic agents with cannabinoids. This is an area of significant consequence for future research when considering the best practices for anesthesia management intraoperatively

    The nursing workforce is the backbone of Africa’s healthcare system, yet the continent faces a critical shortage of nurses. This shortage is exacerbated by high attrition rates, inadequate training and working conditions, migration of skilled professionals, and insufficient investment in workforce development. Without urgent intervention, achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being) will remain a challenge, particularly in ensuring universal health coverage (UHC) and improving maternal and child health outcomes. This side event at ARFSD-11 provides a platform to discuss sustainable strategies for nursing retention and workforce development.     Background. In the U.S., prelicensure nursing students (PNSs) lack informatics competencies due to a lack of educational opportunities and resources. Therefore, there are implications in nursing education for preparing PNSs for patient-centered care using Locsin’s technological competency as caring in nursing theory.Purpose. The purpose is to evaluate the psychometric properties and establish the reliability of the English translation of the TCCNI-R through exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and validity via structural equation modeling to examine if the instrument applies in U.S. academic nursing education in PNSs.Methods. The proposed study utilizes a descriptive, cross-sectional design. Approximately 1,950 nationally accredited prelicensure nursing programs in the U.S. offering Associate and Baccalaureate degrees were contacted. Systematic sampling aims to recruit a minimum of 500 PNSs using the REDCap survey platform.Results. Data will be analyzed using Bartlett test of sphericity, Cronbach’s alpha, Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin test to determine suitability for factor analysis, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling

    Pay it Forward: A Peer Mentoring Program for Doctoral Nursing Students

    Globally, nursing needs a diverse group of individuals with doctoral preparation to transform the profession through leadership, scholarship, and practice. Since Ph.D. and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs are challenging, mentoring can provide a mechanism for student success. Mentoring occurs when someone with more experience supports someone with less experience (1). The purpose of this mixed methods interventional study was to evaluate the efficacy of a mentoring educational intervention on doctoral nursing students’ self-appraisal of their competency regarding mentoring, and to describe the experience of doctoral nursing students’ who mentored and their mentees. Based on the outcomes, this study elucidated how Watson’s Theory of Human Caring (2) supports mentoring practices.Providing doctoral students with mentoring education and experience offers opportunities for personal and professional growth, builds community, and aids in student retention (1, 3). The theoretical framework for this study is Watson\u27s Theory of Human Caring. This theory supports deeper human-to-human involvement and provides a basis for caring, mentoring relationships (2, 3).This mixed methods interventional study had two phases. Phase I involved a quasi-experimental pre-test-post-test design. The intervention included virtual meetings and Mentoring Fundamentals modules. Mentoring Competency Assessment (4) provided competency data. Pre-and-post intervention scores were compared. After completion of the first phase, students were assigned mentees. Phase II began several months after completion of Phase I. Narrative inquiry (5) was used to uncover students’ stories, through semi-structured interviews, about participating in peer mentoring. The interviews also explored how Watson’s Theory of Human Caring affected their mentoring. University’s IRB approval was obtained. The results of data analysis for both phases will be shared at the presentation.Peer mentoring can assist doctoral students’ socialization in the scholarly community (1). Application of caring practices by mentors fosters deeper understanding and empathy for others, intentionality, and reflective thought (2, 4). The mentoring experience assures students’ professional growth, enhances resilience, and encourages perseverance during difficult times. The mentoring skills acquired can be used throughout these nurses’ leadership career and serve to support the next generation of nurses
