Conducting Research with Stigmatized Populations: Practices, Challenges, and Lessons Learned
CSCW \u2718: Companion of the 2018 ACM Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing-- October 2018
doi.org/10.1145/3272973.3273003
Conducting research with communities who are at risk of being stigmatized can be a challenging endeavor. It is often difficult to reach and recruit individuals for research purposes regarding a stigmatized condition or situation. Yet, researchers in our field have recognized the importance of work in this area and have individually developed a range of strategies to reach, recruit, and work with these populations. This workshop will invite researchers and practitioners to present, discuss, and compare strategies and experiences when working with stigmatized communities in the context of the ever-evolving nature of technology. The outcomes of the workshop will include an outline for an article that will summarize the strategies and practices discussed as well as identify the approaches that have led to the best outcomes across different populations.

Impact of previous anti-angiogenesis treatment in nivolumab-treated advanced non-small cell lung cancer
Aim: To investigate how previous systemic therapy such as anti-angiogenesis can influence cancer immunotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
Methods: A total of 134 patients with advanced NSCLC who were treated with nivolumab were retrospectively reviewed. Correlation between status of prior anti-angiogenesis treatment and clinical characteristics were determined. Impact of prior anti-angiogenesis on therapeutic outcome of nivolumab was investigated for tumor efficacy such as progression free survival (PFS).
Results: Sixteen patients were treated with at least one anti-angiogenesis agent prior to nivolumab. The prior use of antiangiogenesis agent was associated with stage IV disease, non-squamous histology, and two or more lines of systemic therapy. Median PFS was significantly shorter in the prior anti-angiogenesis group than in no prior anti-angiogenesis group (8.3 vs. 11.3 weeks, log-rank P = 0.006). Multivariate analyses demonstrated that only prior anti-angiogenesis status was associated with worse PFS. There is also a slight trend for worse disease control rate (P = 0.101, Fisher’s exact test) and overall survival (P = 0.200, log-rank) in prior anti-angiogenesis group.
Conclusion: This retrospective study suggests that prior anti-angiogenesis treatment negatively impacts the therapeutic outcome of immunotherapy in advanced NSCLC
NSCLC: State of the Art Diagnosis, Treatment, and Outcomes
Purpose of Review Lung cancer is the major cause of cancer mortality in the USA. In this review, we aim to provide a general update on the current status of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) management. Recent Findings Novel approaches in the diagnosis and treatment of non-small cell lung cancer have been made recently and this was revolutionary in the way lung cancer management has changed even-though the improvement in overall survival remains modest. Furthermore, lung cancer screening using low-dose computed tomography scan has shown benefit in high-risk populations. Summary The diagnosis of lung cancer has evolved over the last couple of years with the new endoscopic modalities. Targeted therapies and immunotherapies, including tyrosine kinase inhibitors and checkpoint inhibitors, constitutes the current progress made in the treatment of lung cancer, and have helped improve survival in the metastatic setting. Many trials are ongoing in investigating other biomarkers
Effect of compliance of enhanced recovery after surgery protocols on pain control at a community medical center
2018 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting / Anaheim, California / Poster 11-307
Objective: Determine the utilization of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols at Parkview Regional Medical Center (PRMC) • Assess the impact of both preoperative (pre-op) and postoperative (post-op) ERAS protocols on post-op pain management and nausea and vomiting in comparison to utilization of only pre-op or only post-op ERAS protocols

Computational Exploration of Gerontology-Related Topics Shared on Social Media Platform Twitter
Twitter, a popular Internet social media platform, has become a significant medium for sharing information and ideas about various topics, including aging and older adults. While studies have been conducted to examine stigma or perception about specific diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and seizure on Twitter, there has been little effort to identify general themes of Twitter posts related to aging and older adults. This exploratory study attempts to answer this need by conducting a topic analysis of posts shared on Twitter posts about aging and older adults in English. We collected 328,568 English posts from Twitter posted between 07/01/18 and 07/31/18 using 19 English keywords referring to older adults. We analyzed this whole dataset as well as a subset of posts explicitly including aging-related hashtags, such as #olderadults. We used data mining methods (including Latent Dirichlet Allocation) in computing environment MATLAB to discover topics emerging from these two sets. Among posts with explicit aging-related hashtags, the most recurrent topics were family (relation with children and grandchildren, commemoration), community (resources, looking after older adults), health (disease-specific, public health, home care, formal and informal caregivers), politics and policies (insurance/pension, new laws), and news involving older adults (e.g., crimes on/by older adults). The analysis of the larger dataset additionally uncovered posts promoting pornography featuring older females and posts sharing general Internet content featuring older adults (e.g., YouTube videos). We also share the methodological challenges we encountered and practical recommendations for gerontological researchers interested in using social media data to inform new research
