Can You Hear Us? A Content Analysis of Queer Representation in Audio Dramas

    Get PDF
In this thesis, I analyze queer representation in seven popular audio drama podcasts. By studying examples of implicit and explicit mentions of sexuality and gender identity, queerness as an integral plot point, and general discussions of sexuality, along with fan responses to these shows and characters on social media, I examine how these representations compare to other media forms, like film and television. I aim to show how these independently created shows offer positive, realistic, and well-rounded queer characters, and how this can be incredibly beneficial to the queer audiences listening

Recording COVID-19: “Escape” an Autobiographical Graphic Novel on Pandemic Experiences

    No full text
This senior project includes a project statement and an autobiographical graphic novel that documents the author’s personal experience during the pandemic. The purpose of this project is to reflect on the continuing situation of the coronavirus pandemic. Specifically, it hopes to provide insights for understanding the drastic changes in the world and to acknowledge the various pandemic experiences. Disease control measures restricted people’s mobility and generated a feeling of separation amongst people. The increasing physical distance between people created greater difficulties to resonate with others. This project argues for reconstructing the coronavirus experience through an autobiographical narrative. The changes in people’s ways of communication and the intensified self-awareness caused by isolation during the pandemic will be analyzed to argue for the advantages of using an autobiographical narrative. The reason for using comics to present the pandemic experience will be elucidated in the project statement. The graphic novel documents the author’s personal experiences during the pandemic through a graphic narrative. Focusing on topics related to identity, education, politics, family, psychological struggles, and other topics, the graphic novel attempts to capture a unique yet engaging pandemic experience

Colonial Imaginaries: Reconstructing French Indochina through Cultural Artifacts

    No full text
This senior project examines the colonial conquest of Indochina on the part of the French during the last half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century not purely as a geographical and historical phenomenon, but also a conceptual and imaginary one. By analyzing and juxtaposing two distinctive cultural artifacts – the reconstructed Angkor Wat in the 1931 Colonial Exposition in Paris and the Vietnamese bánh mì – this project contends that French Indochina constitutes an imaginary and performative construct on the part of both the French and the indigenous Indochinese populations, who approach and (re)imagine their colonial situation in disparate ways. As evidenced in the case of the Angkor Wat in the 1931 Colonial Exposition in Paris, which could be read as a work of propagandist fiction, the colonial imaginary of Indochina as constructed by French colonists is a phantasmatic and performative one that comes into considerable conflict with the violent realities of (de)colonization. On the other hand, in the case of the Vietnamese bánh mì – a sandwich which has its roots in the expensive wheat bread, which was regarded as the quintessential French staple – the Vietnamese population appear not as passive participants confined to the French colonial imaginary, but as active agents in (re)imagining their own colonial foodways
