    Get PDF
Purpose: Corporate value refers to shareholders’ perceptions and is closely tied to the market price of equity shares, serving as an indicator of a firm’s success, with higher stock prices reflecting greater corporate value. Recent declines in profitability in Kenya’s banking and insurance sectors prompt an investigation into the role of capital structure in influencing corporate value. The general objective of this study is to determine the effect of capital structure on the firm value of listed financial institutions in Kenya. Methodology: A descriptive longitudinal design is employed to capture the dynamic influence of capital structure over five years, from 2019 to 2023. The target population comprises 16 financial institutions listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange in the banking and insurance sectors, and due to the small population size, a census study approach is used. Secondary panel data is collected from financial statements filed with the Capital Markets Authority and processed using STATA, ensuring that the assumptions of the classical linear regression model are met. Data analysis reveals a subtle set of findings. Findings: The overall model explains 59.17% of the variation in corporate value. Capital structure demonstrates a strong positive influence with a coefficient of 0.53 (p-value = 0.00), underscoring its role as a significant driver of firm value. The findings underscore the importance of capital structure as a critical lever in Kenya’s financial sector. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: This study offers valuable insights for regulatory bodies, policymakers, and investors seeking to optimize capital structure for value maximization, providing empirical support for strategic decisions aimed at enhancing corporate value in emerging markets

    Get PDF
Purpose: This paper explores the trend of exchange rates over the past three decades, forecasts future trends, and investigates the impulse response of exports and imports on exchange rate shocks in Kenya. The study utilizes time series (1990-2022) data from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) and the World Development Indicators (WDI). Methodology: The study employs the Structural VAR (SVAR) model, Vector Error Correction (VECM) model, and Impulse Response (I.R.) analysis to analyze the pass-through effect of exchange rate shocks on exports and imports in Kenya. Findings: The results of VECM highlighted a long-term relationship between exchange rates, GDP growth, Inflation, and trade volumes. Moreover, the Impulse Response Analysis revealed no instantaneous pass-through effect on imports and exports. However, an appreciation of the Kenyan Shilling led to a significant negative pass-through effect on the volume of imports. Further, the results indicated a one-way causality between the exchange rate and GDP growth rate. Also, the exchange rate and Inflation rate have a one-way granger causality. Moreover, the exchange rate Granger causes the volume of exports, while the volume of Imports Granger causes the exchange rate and the GDP growth rate Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The study findings emphasize the importance of stable exchange rate policies to mitigate negative impacts on trade. Policymakers should consider strategies to enhance export performance, reduce trade imbalances, and strengthen the economy\u27s resilience to exchange rate fluctuations

Blending Perceptual and Social Information to Guide Psychomotor Behaviour: A Study of Ghanaian and Ghanaian-American Infants

    Get PDF
Purpose: This study examined how mothers from two different geopolitical areas having the same cultural roots blended perceptual and social information to coax infants’ psychomotor behaviour to learn how to walk. It emphasizes how culture and acculturation (migration) shape maternal social information and their behavioral outcomes to entice infants to learn how to walk.   Methodology: This research is observational quantitative. It collected and analyzed data, such as maternal coaxing of infants to walk, infants’ psychomotor decisions, infants’ perceptual exploration such as crawling or sitting down, infants facial and vocal expressions. Findings:  On maternal coaxing messages to induce infants to walk, with agreed baseline of 99.5% of trials, indigenous Ghanaian mothers, scored 95%, while the Ghanaian mothers living in New York scored 89.55%. Infants’ psychomotor decisions to reciprocate maternal coaxing to walk were 180 seconds individually for four of the Ghanaian infants, while three of the infants from New York-based mothers scored 180, 178 and 174 seconds respectively. Infants’ facial expression, such as laughing and babbling, the two groups diverged significantly on a benchmark of 91.3 %. Crying and facial frowning were found to be high among Ghanaian-American infants’: Ghanaian infants scored 40 percent (37.24), while Ghanaian-Americans infants scored 60 percent (55.86). These data were interpreted to mean that even though, the two groups of mothers were both Ghanaians culturally, yet the contexts of maternal expressions to coax infants to walk varied significantly. This suggests that infants’ executive function, as well as effortful psychomotor control, do not only depend on mothers deliberate coaxing methods, they also vary both across cultures, and more significantly within cultures as a result of the impact of migration. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: This study underscores how critical it is to understand the process of acculturation as key to migrants’ psychological adaptation to the new culture. At both group and individual levels, acculturation often influences changes to migrants’ home culture and their indigenous social practices as they become introduced to the overarching culture of destination, highlighting the need for a culture-sensitive, Childhood Education for immigrant children as they migrate from L1 to L2.    &nbsp

Interplay between Philosophical Idealism and Religious Fundamentalism in Shaping Worldviews in Indonesia

    Get PDF
Purpose: The aim of the study was to analyze the interplay between philosophical idealism and religious fundamentalism in shaping worldviews in Indonesia. Methodology: This study adopted a desk methodology. A desk study research design is commonly known as secondary data collection. This is basically collecting data from existing resources preferably because of its low cost advantage as compared to a field research. Our current study looked into already published studies and reports as the data was easily accessed through online journals and libraries. Findings: Recent studies reveal that philosophical idealism and religious fundamentalism jointly shape worldviews by blending abstract metaphysical concepts with literal doctrinal interpretations. Individuals with strong idealistic leanings often adopt rigid religious views, influenced by factors such as existential insecurity and symbolic interactions. This integration fosters polarized cultural narratives and reinforces group identity in contemporary society. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Social constructivism theory, symbolic interactionism theory & social identity theory may be used to anchor future studies on interplay between philosophical idealism and religious fundamentalism in shaping worldviews in Indonesia. Educators and practitioners should integrate religious mysticism into curricula and creative programs to foster a balanced dialogue between analytical and experiential modes of thought. Policymakers are encouraged to support initiatives that fund interdisciplinary research and educational programs at the nexus of literature, mysticism, and philosophy

    Lexical Borrowing and Cultural Identity

    Get PDF
Abstract Purpose: The general objective of this study was to examine how the use of borrowed words affects or reflects people’s cultural identity. Methodology: The study adopted a desktop research methodology. Desk research refers to secondary data or that which can be collected without fieldwork. Desk research is basically involved in collecting data from existing resources hence it is often considered a low cost technique as compared to field research, as the main cost is involved in executive’s time, telephone charges and directories. Thus, the study relied on already published studies, reports and statistics. Findings: The findings reveal that there exists a contextual and methodological gap relating to lexical borrowing and cultural identity. Preliminary empirical review revealed that lexical borrowing is a key process that reflects the evolving nature of cultural identity in a globalized world. It allows individuals and communities to adapt to external influences while maintaining elements of their indigenous identity. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The study recommended that linguistic theory incorporate a more sociocultural perspective on lexical borrowing, acknowledging its role in identity formation. Policymakers were advised to support bilingual or multilingual education, ensuring that language preservation was prioritized alongside the adoption of global lexicons
