Rethinking the ‘Other’ Border: Caribbean Migration to Canada
No full textThis paper challenges the myth of Canada as the “Promised Land” for displaced peoples, such as enslaved African Americans who sought refuge via the Underground Railroad. “Drawing on archival and secondary sources, the paper examines the measures taken by Immigration Canada to exclude Caribbean people, arguing that these policies are inextricably connected to the question of who is considered worthy of belonging to and contributing to the nation-building project. While some recognize that Chinese and Sikh immigrant men furnished the physical labor necessary for nation-building by constructing railways and working in the lumber industry, the bodies and the work performed are gendered. This paper seeks to expand the repertoire of actors and the parameters of what counts as nation-building activities by including Caribbean domestic workers. Specifically, the paper examines how these working-class women both inadvertently and directly contributed to Canada’s nation-building in two ways: 1) by assuming reproductive tasks on behalf of middle-class white women and their families and 2) through their activism against deportation

No full textThis article presents the teaching philosophy as an important tool for written reflection on didactic practices among future Polish language teachers. The theoretical section introduces the concept of a teaching philosophy understood as a practice of reflection addressed to school teachers, academics and university students – the future Polish language educators. The discussion is grounded in the tradition of the Teaching Philosophy Statement (TPS). The second part of the article discusses the analysis of fifty essays written by university students between 2022 and 2025. The essays were classified according to categories describing the contemporary understanding of teaching. The analysis allows to identify the level of knowledge and pedagogical awareness among future teachers, as well as their needs and expectations. It also indicates the possible directions of changes whose aim is to improve the quality of general education.W artykule przedstawiono filozofię nauczania jako istotne narzędzie pisemnej refleksji nad praktyką dydaktyczną przyszłych nauczycieli języka polskiego. W części teoretycznej przybliżono zagadnienie filozofii nauczania rozumianej jako praktyka refleksyjności skierowana do nauczycieli szkolnych i akademickich, a także studentów – przyszłych polonistów. Omawiana problematyka została osadzona w tradycji Teaching Philosophy Statement (TPS). W drugiej części artykułu zaprezentowano analizę 50 esejów studenckich powstałych w latach 2022–2025. Eseje te zostały zaklasyfikowane według kategorii opisujących współczesne rozumienie nauczania. Analiza pozwala rozpoznać stan wiedzy i świadomości pedagogicznej przyszłych nauczycieli, a także ich potrzeby i oczekiwania. Wskazuje również możliwe kierunki zmian służących poprawie jakości edukacji powszechnej

Get PDFSince at least the 1960s, public discourse has pointed to the need for legal protection of folklore from its uncontrolled, commercial and often inappropriate use. However, no regulation has yet been developed that would, on the one hand, protect the legitimate interests of local cultural communities and, at the same time, not excessively restrict access to broadly understood cultural goods for the entire society. The author of this article is looking for an appropriate model for the legal protection of folklore, analyzing in this regard primarily the concept of protection based on the copyright regime and the concept of sui generis regulation.Przynajmniej od lat 60. XX w. w dyskursie publicznym wskazuje się na konieczność wprowadzenia prawnej ochrony folkloru przed jego niekontrolowanym, komercyjnym i często niewłaściwym wykorzystywaniem. Dotychczas nie udało się wszakże wypracować regulacji, która z jednej strony zabezpieczałaby słuszne interesy lokalnych wspólnot kulturowych, a z drugiej – nie ograniczała nadmiernie dostępu do szeroko rozumianych dóbr kultury dla całego społeczeństwa. Get PDFThe paper discusses the destruction of rhythms, one of the deforming tendencies identified by Antoine Berman, in Krzysztof Klinger’s translation of Virginia Woolf’s stream-of-consciousness novel To the Lighthouse. It demonstrates how the modifications of syntax and punctuation impact the novel’s rhythm and, consequently, its meaning, particularly regarding the creation of a stream of consciousness. No full textThis paper attempts a new take on metaphysics with the help of philosophers who are usually perceived as opposing the metaphysical tradition. This was done on the basis of an etymological deconstruction and a demonstration of the “technical” way of being of man in nature. The next section shows Michel de Montaigne as an example of the outlined metaphysical nature of man – “customary nature.” Essential to it is the act of writing, understood both literally and metaphorically. Hence, in the last part of the article, for metaphysics as an ever-present challenge to contemporary philosophy, the essay turns out to be the best form.Artykuł stanowi wstępną próbę nowego ujęcia metafizyki z pomocą filozofów, którzy zwykle uchodzą za przeciwników metafizycznej tradycji. Dokonano tego wpierw na podstawie etymologicznej dekonstrukcji i ukazania „technicznego” sposobu bycia człowieka w naturze. W kolejnym kroku pokazano Michela de Montaigne jako przykład zarysowanej metafizycznej natury człowieka – „natury zwyczajowej”. It explains why this form of storytelling, once considered extremely experimental, seems particularly compatible with contemporary media environment: especially interactive and digital media. The author discusses those immanent features of second-person narration that evoke the impression of liveness and activate the reader or media user, giving him a sense of direct participation in fictional events.Artykuł poświęcony jest przyczynom rosnącej popularności narracji drugoosobowej w literaturze druku. Wyjaśnia, dlaczego ta niegdyś uznawana za ekstremalnie eksperymentalną forma opowiadania wydaje się szczególnie kompatybilna ze współcześnie zachodzącymi zmianami w otoczeniu medialnym: zwłaszcza w mediach interaktywnych i cyfrowych. Autorka wymienia te immanentne cechy narracji drugoosobowej, które ewokują wrażenie odbioru i tworzenia na żywo oraz aktywizują odbiorcę, dając mu poczucie bezpośredniej partycypacji w fikcyjnych zdarzeniach
“I Feel Like I’m a Different Person”: Exploring Undergraduate Students’ Imagined L2 Selves
Get PDFIdentity has a prominent place in language education. It can be manifested by the imagined L2 self, understood as a realization of how L2 learners imagine, perceive and talk about their experience of being an L2 user. It might be argued that undergraduate students of foreign languages should exhibit more complex language identities, as their imagined L2 selves are shaped by their rich language repertoires. The major aim of the study was to examine undergraduate students’ imagined L1 and L2 selves, by investigating two dimensions of their complex language identity, namely: how they view these languages and how they feel using these languages. A total of 200 students (88 English major, 67 German major and 45 Swedish major students) completed a questionnaire designed to explore their specific perception of the languages they speak and the way they feel using them. The results offer an interesting insight into the complex language identity profiles of the participants and their imagined selves. Overall, the students seem to show high language awareness; they are sensitive to the differences in language systems, including the sounds and the pragmatics of a given language. The students also exhibit very positive attitudes towards their imagined L2 selves. It is, thus, suggested that language teachers provide a platform for the students to express their complex identities by incorporating language journals, or language biographies, in order to allow the students to explore their identities in more depth. It can also be argued that the teachers could capitalize on the affective dimension of the students’ L2 identity, by fostering the students’ intrinsic motivation and supporting their investment in learning
