The Nigerian State and Affirmative Action on Women Empowerment: The Igbo Experience, 1999 – 2015
Get PDFSince 1999, efforts have been made by the Nigeria’s administrations to broaden the participation of women in politics. Findings indicate that this ‘Affirmative Action’ on women was propped from without – mostly by the United Nations MDGs. That notwithstanding, the result of the government’s Affirmative Action has been mired in contentions and arguments. Quantitatively, more women have been appointed ministers, commissioners and a host of other appointive positions. More women have also jostled for elective positions in government. However, the qualitative implications of Affirmative Action on women empowerment especially, as it affects the country’s rural women appears to leave much to be desired. Using rural Igbo women as a case in point, this study appraises Nigeria’s efforts at engendering gender equality from 1999 – 2015. With the Igbo experience, the study argues that government policies on gender equality ends up being beneficial to a few educated urban – dwelling women to the neglect of the vast majority of poor, uneducated rural women. The study canvasses a refocusing of attention – away from the state; as indeed, the state may not wield the magical wand needed to demolish gender inequality. A synergy of civil society organizations, faith – based institutions, progressive traditional institutions as well as the government is herein advocated as a remedy. Through literacy skills, a person not only gains knowledge but can also use his knowledge and experience to be used as a reference in the future.
As an educator at the Supiori Adventist Middle School, I encountered a problem which was the result of my question and answer observation as an educator that most students were unable to understand or analyze exam questions. The limitations of the standard Indonesian vocabulary also affect the way students give correct answers verbally, thus making the answers shallow. More about the background of the geographical conditions of the area of origin of the students at Supiori Advent Middle School, it has a considerable impact on how they communicate in correct Indonesian.
This research method uses a qualitative descriptive method with the type of Classroom Action Research (CAR). This research is an effort to improve the learning process and improve student learning outcomes in Indonesian, especially reading texts. This Classroom Action Research is used because the problems that occur in the classroom are related to the implementation of teaching and learning activities.
Based on the results of classroom action research in Class VIII of SMP Advent Supiori which has been carried out through several actions, namely cycle I and cycle II, as well as based on discussion and assessment it can be concluded that there is an increase in critical thinking in Class VIII students of SMP Advent Supiori in reading literacy

Get PDFThis study aims to describe the patriarchal culture of the character Kim Ji-yeong in the novel "Kim Ji-yeong" by Cho Nam-joo. The research uses qualitative methods with a literary anthropological approach. The data source in this research is a novel entitled "Kim Ji-yeong" by Cho Nam-joo, published by Gramedia Pustaka Utama, a member of IKAPI in 2019 which consists of 191 pages. Data collection techniques using content analysis techniques. The research results obtained, namely the patriarchal culture of the character Kim Ji-yeong contained in the novel "Kim Ji-yeong" by Cho Nam-joo are: (1) Patriarchal relations within the family. Doing housework and taking care of children is considered a full time job for a woman. (2) Patriarchal relations in work with wages, namely male workers will always get a higher salary than female workers. (3) Male violence. Many women often experience violence by men either physically, psychologically or verbally. (4) Patriarchal relations in culture. In a patriarchal culture, women have many demands, one example is having an ideal body shape. As for the implications for learning literature in schools, especially in high school regarding learning about literature, it is hoped that it can become an additional reference for teaching materials in learning literary works, more specifically novel literary works. psychological or verbal abuse.
