Odpady z przemysłu tekstylnego jako nośnik azotu organicznego dla sektora ogrodniczego
The fast fashion phenomenon generates significant amounts of textile waste every year. Only in Europe it is 12.6 million Mg, of which oak trees and footwear account for 5.2 million Mg. One way to manage them is material recycling, where new fabric will be created in the processes of fiberising, spinning and weaving, but the share of waste processed in this way is 1% of the mass. Another method is development aimed at improving the properties of soil by using physically and chemically modified waste and using it as a soil improver. The study examined the possibility of using waste cotton fabric as a carrier of an organic nitrogen fertilizer with a sustainable effect. Scraps of waste cotton fabric with a grammage of 408 g/m2 were saturated with hot collagen solution, which after drying constituted 1/3 of the weight of the samples. The scraps prepared in this way were used as fertilizer for light soil with a granulometric composition of clay sand. Rinsing with rainwater at a temperature of 20oC was used. The nitrogen contained in the collagen was released into the soil solution within 42 days, with the maximum concentration occurring 4-6 days after application. An additional advantage of the obtained material is the natural water capacity of cotton, which is important from the point of view of collecting water in light soils. At the same time, slow degradation of the cotton fabric was observed, which broke into fragments after 3 months of incubation. The applied modification of waste cotton fabric makes it possible to use textile waste as a fertilizer carrier, which will reduce the weight of cotton waste sent for incineration or landfilled.
Zjawisko fast fashion generuje co roku znaczne masy odpadów tekstylnych. Tylko w Europie to 12,6 mln Mg z czego ubrania i obuwie to 5,2 mln Mg. Jednym ze sposobów ich zagospodarowania jest recykling materiałowy, gdzie w procesach rozwłókniania, przędzenia i tkania powstanie nowa tkanina, jednak udział tak przetwarzanych odpadów wynosi 1% masy. Innym sposobem jest zagospodarowanie mające na celu poprawę własności gleb poprzez zastosowanie modyfikowanych fizycznie i chemicznie odpadów i wykorzystanie jako polepszacza glebowego. W pracy badano możliwość zastosowania odpadowej tkaniny bawełnianej jako nośnika organicznego nawozu azotowego o zrównoważonym działaniu. Skrawki odpadowej tkaniny bawełnianej o gramaturze 408g/m2 nasycano gorącym roztworem kolagenu, który po wysuszeniu stanowił 1/3 masy próbek. Tak przygotowane skrawki, zastosowano jako nawóz dla gleby lekkiej o składzie granulometrycznym piasku gliniastego. Zastosowano przemywanie wodą deszczową o temperaturze 20oC. Azot zawarty w kolagenie został uwolniony w ciągu 42 dni do roztworu glebowego, przy czym maksimum stężeń przypadło na okres 4-6 dnia po aplikacji. Dodatkową zaletą uzyskanego materiału jest naturalna pojemność wodna bawełny, co jest istotne z punktu widzenia gromadzenia wody w glebach lekkich. Równolegle, zaobserwowano powolną degradację tkaniny bawełnianej, która po 3 miesiącach inkubacji rozpadała się na fragmenty. Zastosowana modyfikacja odpadowej tkaniny bawełnianej daje możliwość zagospodarowania odpadów tekstylnych jako nośnik nawozu, co pozwoli na zmniejszenie masy odpadów bawełnianych kierowanych do spalania lub składowanych.
 
Perspektywy rozwoju slow tourism na Podkarpaciu
Due to its location, natural and cultural potential and the needs of a conscious tourist for a tourist product based on the slow principles, the Podkarpackie Province may in the future be the main destination for a selected group of recipients. Currently, many owners of rural accommodation facilities are expanding their offer with attractions related to mindfulness, such as contemplation in the surroundings of nature, sauna baths, and the possibility of spending the night in the open air. The offer is diverse, which gives the prospect of participation to both customers who prefer agritourism and newer forms, e.g. glamping. In addition, there have appeared offers of socially engaged tourism, in which the tourist has the opportunity to closely interact with the host of the attraction or the local community. The examples of implementing tourist services in the slow tourism trends described in the article constitute a model for searching for a new forms of recreation that contribute to the retardation of negative changes in the natural and socio-cultural environment.Województwo podkarpackie ze względu na swoje położenie, potencjał przyrodniczo-kulturowy i rozwijające się potrzeby świadomego turysty (zainteresowanego także produktem turystycznym opartym o zasady slow) może w przyszłości stanowić główny kierunek destynacji wybranej grupy odbiorców turystyki. Aktualnie wielu właścicieli wiejskiej bazy noclegowej poszerza swoją ofertę o atrakcje związane z uważnością, takie jak kontemplacja w otoczeniu natury, kąpiele w saunie, możliwość noclegu pod gołym niebem. Ocena wpływu bobra europejskiego Castor fiber na środowisko przyrodnicze Poleskiego Parku Narodowego w obszarze oddziaływania Lubelskiego Zagłębia Węglowego
This paper presents drone images to assess the impact of European beaver Castor fiber activity on the ecosystems of Polesie National Park. The study confirms the close relationship between the presence of beavers in Polesie National Park and the size of the water surface, which confirms the positive impact of beaver activity on the retention of the catchment area. Thanks to the presence and activity of beavers, the drastic decrease in the level of surface water caused by meteorological drought did not cause soil drought. This may be evidenced by the increase in the area of herbaceous plants in autumn in the regions where a total decrease in the water table has been shown. As the area and number of foraging plants increased, the area occupied by dry vegetation decreased. This may confirm the positive effect of beavers on water retention and vegetation in the study areas, especially under the impact of atmospheric drought.W pracy zaprezentowano wykorzystanie zdjęć wykonanych przez drony do oceny wpływu działalności bobra europejskiego Castor fiber na ekosystemy Poleskiego Parku Narodowego (PPN). Dzięki obecności i działalności tych zwierząt drastyczny spadek poziomu wód powierzchniowych, spowodowany suszą meteorologiczną, nie spowodował suszy glebowej. Może o tym świadczyć wzrost powierzchni roślin zielnych w okresie jesiennym na terenach, na których wykazano całkowity spadek lustra wody. Wraz ze wzrostem powierzchni i liczby żeremi spadała powierzchnia zajmowana przez roślinność suchą. Może to potwierdzać pozytywny wpływ obecności bobrów na retencję wody i roślinność na badanych powierzchniach, szczególnie w warunkach występowania skutków suszy atmosferycznej
Drugie życie odpadów winiarskich. Praktyki zrównoważonego przetwarzania
The paper presents a sustainable approach to the treatment of wastes (such as pomace, seeds, stalks, and lees) generated during the winemaking process. It includes an analysis of various methods of their use in the food, feed, biogas, fertilizer, cosmetic, construction, and medical industries. The potential of these wastes in the production of functional products is highlighted, emphasizing their role in a closed-loop economy and their contribution to reducing the negative impact of winemaking on the environment. Thanks to modern processing methods, winery waste can be used to produce a variety of products, which promotes sustainable development and improves resource efficiency. The purpose of this paper is to present solutions to reduce the negative impact of winemaking on the environment and show the economic benefits of recycling this waste.Praca prezentuje zrównoważone podejście do przetwarzania odpadów (wytłoków, pestek, łodyg, osadów drożdżowych) powstających podczas produkcji wina. Zawiera przegląd różnych metod ich wykorzystania w różnych branżach przemysłu, w tym spożywczym, paszowym, biogazowym, nawozowym, kosmetycznym, budowlanym oraz w medycynie. Podkreślono potencjał tych odpadów w produkcji funkcjonalnych produktów, zwracając uwagę na ich rolę w gospodarce o obiegu zamkniętym oraz w ograniczaniu negatywnego wpływu winiarstwa na środowisko. Dzięki innowacyjnym metodom przetwarzania, odpady winiarskie mogą być wykorzystywane do tworzenia produktów o szerokim zakresie zastosowań, przyczyniając się do zrównoważonego rozwoju oraz poprawy efektywności wykorzystania zasobów. Simplified vs modified (reduced) ultrasound 6 joint score in assessing disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis patients
Introduction and aim. With increasing ultrasound US assessment opportunities for tight rheumatoid arthritis (RA) management, more simplified accurate US-assessment is desired in clinical practice. Aim of the work is assessing modified vs simplified ultrasound 6-joint scores relevance in assessing rheumatoid arthritis disease activity.
Material and methods. Fifty-five RA patients were subjected to detailed history, clinical, and musculoskeletal examination with disease activity assessment by clinical disease activity index, simple disease activity index and disease activity score in 28 joints. Com plete blood count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, rheumatoid factor, anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies were done. Patients underwent US examination (gray-scale and power Doppler) for wrist, 2nd and 3rd metacarpophalangeal and knee joints bilaterally. Synovitis composite score was added. Two US indices were constructed: simplified S6 and modified M6 joint scores.
Results. Statistical significant positive correlations were high between S6/M6 score parameters (total, grey-scale (GS), power doppler (PD), Composite) and disease activity markers. Both M6 and S6 scores differentiated mild-moderate and moderate-severe disease activity patients. However, only S6 score differentiated remission from mild disease activity patients.
Conclusion. Ultrasound 6-joint scores (especially simplified S6) were rapid, easy and sensitive ultrasound tools assessing rheu matoid arthritis disease activity in clinical practice
Identification of Brucella melitensis from camel’s blood by vitek2 and real time polymerase chain reaction
Introduction and aim. Brucellosis is a zoonotic disease. Experimental clinical and laboratory diagnosis is still facing problems in identifying the organism. The present study will diagnose a Brucella infection in camel blood in Qatar using serological assays. Isolation and identification were performed on a camel blood sample. Brucella in bacterial isolates was determined by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) as a gold standard test.
Material and methods. A total of 220 samples, 200 random serum samples, and 20 EDTA blood samples were selected among the above-mentioned random samples, and 20 serum samples from camel handlers were collected from Al Shahaniya prov ince, Qatar. The Rose Bengal test (RBT), buffered antigen plate agglutination test (BAPAT), and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (cELISA) for the monoclonal antibody in serum samples were performed using commercially available kits. For the molecular detection of Brucella, conventional PCR and real-time PCR (GPS kit) were used for the genus-specific insertion sequence IS711. Brucella melitensis (MICROBOSS Hightech GmbH kit) was used to identify subspecies.
Results. The results identified by vitek2 compact (30%) showed B. melitensis in 6 samples out of 20 isolates. Both conventional (66.67%) and RT-PCR (83.33%) analyses supported this, demonstrating the presence of Brucella. These tests also showed that Brucella species were present in Rose Bengal 182/200 (91%), BAPAT 182/200 (91%), and cELISA (90%) 180/200 in camel serum.
Conclusion. To conclude, the prevalence of brucellosis in dromedary camels is higher in this region, and as a matter of urgency, measures should be taken to control the disease
ChatGPT in hospital infection prevention and control – assessing knowledge of an AI model based on a validated questionnaire
Introduction and aim. An AI model like ChatGPT is a good source of knowledge. We can explore the potential of AI models to complement the expertise of healthcare professionals by providing real-time, evidence-based information in infection prevention and control (IPC).
Material and methods. This study involved 110 queries related to IPC, validated by subject experts in IPC. The responses from ChatGPT were evaluated using Bloom’s taxonomy by experienced microbiologists. The scores were divided as 4 as a good response. Statistical analysis was done by correlation coefficient and Cohen’s Kappa.
Results. The overall score was 4.33 (95% CI, q1 3.65–q3 4.64) indicating ChatGPT’s substantial IPC knowledge. A good response (i.e.>4 score) was found in 70 (63.6%) questions, while in 10 (9%) questions, it showed a poor response. The poor response was seen in needle stick injury and personal protective equipment (PPE) doffing-related questions. The overall correlations were found to be significant. Cohen’s Kappa confirmed moderate to substantial agreement between evaluators.
Conclusion. ChatGPT demonstrated a commendable understanding of IPC principles in various domains and the study identifies specific instances where the model may require further refinement especially in critical scenarios such as needlestick injuries and PPE doffing
Synthesis, characterization of isoxazole derivatives and evaluation of their antibacterial, antioxidant and anticancer activity
Introduction and aim. The synthesis of heterocyclic compounds containing oxygen and nitrogen is profoundly intriguing due to their mechanistic implications in both research and development within organic chemistry and drug discovery. The primary aim of this study is to fabricate a range of pharmacologically active drugs containing the isoxazole moiety.
Material and methods. The synthesis of new derivatives of isoxazole was achieved through a one-pot condensation reaction of 2-[(Substituted phenyl)hydrazono]malononitrile (1) and 3-[(Substituted phenyl)azo]-2,4-Pentanedione (2) with sodium acetate and hydroxylamine hydrochloride (1:1) in ethanol. All the compounds were screened for their in vitro antibacterial activity, in vitro antioxidant and anticancer activity. The synthesized compounds underwent characterization through FTIR, 1 H NMR, and 13C NMR analyses, supported by mass spectral data and elemental analysis.
Results. A set of novel isoxazole derivatives was synthesized with a favorable yield. Among compounds 1d, 1e, 2c, 2d, and 2e exhibited notable antioxidant activities. Compounds 1a, 1b, and 1c demonstrated significant anticancer potential against prostate cancer [PC3] cell lines compared to normal HEK cell lines, while 2a displayed the highest inhibitory zone against Escherichia coli.
Conclusion. Novel compounds with multifaceted biological activities have been successfully designed, and a synthetic route to create isoxazole derivatives has been devised and verified
Brazilians living with diabetes do not meet basic physical activity guidelines for health – a cross-sectional study
Introduction and aim. The purpose of this study was to describe the profile of physical activity (PA) of Brazilian adults living with diabetes mellitus living in large Brazilian urban centers, as well as to determine whether the practice aligns with the physical activity guidelines recommended for people with diabetes.
Material and methods. Cross-sectional data were acquired from the 2020 Surveillance System for Risk and Protective Factors for Chronic Non-communicable Diseases, in which about 54,000 persons aged 18 and older in all Brazilian state capitals were contacted in a telephone survey. Participants reported on their engagement in recreational physical activity and active commuting to school and/or work in the three months preceding the interview, as well as the weekly frequency and duration of these activities. They also stated whether they were living with diabetes. A descriptive analysis was performed, and statistical significance was determined using Pearson’s chi-squared test.
Results. In 2020, 7.9% of the population identified themselves living with diabetes. There was a greater frequency among older women and those with less education. Walking, water aerobics, and general gymnastics were the most common kinds of physical activity reported by people with diabetes. Moreover, over half of them (54.5%) were inactive, and 15% matched the physical activity criteria. The majority (90%) practiced PA for 30 minutes or more per day, while 87% of those who were active and exercised 1 to 2 times per week did not meet the requirements of the Ministry of Health.
Conclusion. In 2020, 7.9% of the population identified themselves as having diabetes. There was a higher frequency among older women and those with less schooling. In the sample as a whole, approximately 70% of people living with diabetes were inactive (54.5%) or did not meet the minimum BP recommendations for people with diabetes. The duration of each session seemed to be in line with the recommendations, however, the lack of regularity caused by the low weekly frequency meant that the minimum recommended target could not be achieved. Efforts involving the continued monitoring of people living with diabetes and counseling in Primary Health Care to opt for a more physically active life, seem to be promising acts for a healthier life, pending a definitive resolution to the disease
An overview of incidence and mechanisms promoting weight gain as an adverse effect of oral minoxidil therapy for androgenetic alopecia
Introduction and aim. Androgenetic alopecia, with a mechanism based on the excessive response of hair follicles to androgens, affects a majority of people at some point in their lives, prompting them to seek therapy. Current treatment options for this condition include oral minoxidil, a medication associated with an adverse effect of fluid retention, potentially resulting in weight gain for certain individuals. In contemporary scientific literature, there aren’t many articles focusing solely on this specific side effect. The objective of this review is to explore links between taking oral minoxidil and fluid retention leading to weight gain in patients with androgenetic alopecia by examining available studies in order to understand the mechanisms behind this phenomenon and the dose dependence of fluid retention.
Material and methods. A review of the literature was performed to find connections between oral minoxidil therapy and water retention-induced weight gain.
Analysis of the literature. Clinical trials have demonstrated that low dose oral minoxidil therapy, within the range of 0.5 to 5 mg daily, leads to an improvement in both hair count and density. The incidence of side effects such as hypertrichosis, fluid retention, headache, dizziness, and insomnia, is relatively infrequent. Fluid retention rates varied between 0.22% in the Tanaka study and 10% of patients in the Panchaprateep study. The discontinuation of treatment was necessary in some instances, with the highest rate of 2.4% cases in the Jimenez-Cauhe study. A comparative analysis of studies on oral minoxidil use for refractory hypertension, within the range of 10 to 40 mg daily, revealed that nearly all patients required adding a diuretic to control fluid retention. Some patients discontinued the treatment due to the severity of side effects. In instances of minoxidil overdose, serious complications, including generalized edema, myocardial infarction, stroke, and pleural effusion, were observed. Across these studies, all patients recovered following the discontinuation of minoxidil treatment. The underlying mechanism behind oral minoxidil induced sodium and fluid retention, contributing to weight gain, is associated with alterations in the neurohumoral system, increased plasma renin activity, changes in renal hemodynamics with relocation of the blood circulation from outer to inner cortex, and tubular effect that can be connected to minoxidil ability to act as an opener of potassium channels in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle causing greater reabsorption of sodium and chloride.
Conclusion. The frequency and severity of water retention promoting weight gain in individuals taking oral minoxidil are dose dependent. In most patients, minoxidil is a safe and effective treatment option for androgenetic alopecia. In some cases, due to rapid weight gain of 5 pounds or more, adding a diuretic or discontinuation may be required. Further research is necessary to better understand the mechanisms and dose dependence of minoxidil induced fluid retention, which promotes weight gain
