The reason why a term like’’Chicano/-a’’ was coined and what it means politically, socially, economically and also is going to be discussed in depth. The term Chicano or Chicana (also spelled Xicano or Xicana) was coined to characterize Latinos as American born, but originally based in Mexico. Filmed in 1987, the movie ‘’Born in East L.A.’’ is a cultural representation of Xicanos, that’s why this movie has become a great source for me to fill the term ‘’Chicano/-a’’ to form the basis for my assignment and be able to be more open in terms of elucidating the new identity called ‘’chicano’’today
Of Genes and Germs: The Agenda of Health in Contemporary Hollywood
Get PDFWithin the digital labyrinth, our telling of the medical present and future is also mediated as expected, by a web of technological upgradations. Science and technology may have strengthened the health security of its citizens and so did the old villains/attackers of the human body which have become more powerful. Deadlier viruses have penetrated into the complex genomic structures of the human race which have paved the way for invention of human supportive vaccinations and also destructive possibilities of biological warfare. Through this paper, I study this tensely and anxious predicament of human beings as conceived and represented in popular cinema. With the help of certain select texts, Steven Soderbergh Contagion (2011), Wolfgang Petersen’s Outbreak (1995), Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s 28 Weeks Later (2007) and Marc Forster’s World War Z (2013), I explore the sabotage of a specific individual agency- the human body and the ensuing chaos and disorder. While this paper will encompass the fear of the malign agent or the contagion and the cultural representation of health, I argue that the agenda of health may not localise/concentrate the workings of power to a privileged minority, but rather because of being a common requirement, this agenda can control and disrupt the entire social order of the world. The possibilities of this paper are limited within the framework of ‘virus’ as the agent, ‘health’ as the agenda and the human ‘body’ as the agency where various mediations could occur
Sleaze, Slur... and the Search for a Sanitized Identity: Bhojpuri Media at a Crossroads
Get PDFThis article offers perspectives on those who control the Bhojpuri media industry in Mumbai, India, and delimit what is to be shown. Bhojpuri is a dialect of Hindi spoken in parts of the north Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The influx of migrants from these regions to different parts of India has led to a resurgence of interest in the Bhojpuri media, and has drawn fly-by-night operators to the industry. To cater to the migrants’ needs, ribald action romances are produced; but this very bawdiness hamstrings attempts to widen the audience base. The article examines the issues that plague the industry, and explores the ways in which the industry is struggling to carve a sanitized, yet distinctive identity.Keywords: Bhojpuri; media industry; ribald; sanitized; migrant
Tragicomedy, Melodrama, and Genre in Early Sound Films: The Case of Two “Sad Clown” Musicals
Get PDFThis interdisciplinary study applies the theatrical theories of stage genres to examples of the early sound cinema, the 1930 Hollywood musicals Puttin’ on the Ritz (starring Harry Richman, and with songs by Irving Berlin) and Free and Easy (starring Buster Keaton). The discussion focuses on the phenomenon of the sad clown as a symbol of tragicomedy. Springing from Rick Altman’s delineation of the “sad clown” sub-subgenre of the show musical subgenre, outlined in The American Film Musical, this article shows that, in these seminal movie musicals, naïve melodrama and “gag” comedy coexist with the tonalities, structures, philosophy, and images of the sophisticated genre of tragicomedy, including by incorporating the grotesque into the mise en scene of their musical production numbers
From Past To Present A Cognitive Work On “New Turkish Cinema”
Get PDFIn recent years, “new” concept has become very consumable especially within the context of politics in our country. Generally, after certain periods in Turkey, “new”, representative of political changes and emphasizing reconstruction process, has been a concept that frequently used in paralel with political, social, economic and cultural use, from past to present. Turkish cinema has had many periods from its constructive years to present; some of which have been in diffuculties and crisises. Having been overcome after every crisis, Turkish Cinema has always recovered itself. After this recovery, process to be rising or expected to be shown up, has wanted to be emphasised by the characterisation of the “new” concept, needed to be created or created different structure. New Cinema concept is considered as a genre as not possible to mention a real stream in the Turkish cinema. The search of the young directors for an alternative cinema language, experiencing types, using various production and filming styles have revealed a richness in development of our cinema. In this essay, New Cinema concept will be introduced in terms of its usage and meanings attributed to it in Turkish cinema. Moreover, its place and importance in Turkish cinema history will be discussed
Reading of the Architectural Identity via Cinema
Get PDFThis study focused on the identity and proficiency of the profession of architecture via characters of “architect”, “student of architecture” and “having ambition to become an architect” in various films. Conclusions have been drawn about the professional applications and architectural life from the cinematographic level regarding the architect characters and their jobs via the seven films and a total of eleven different architect characters studied. This study aims to revise, through the cinema, the questions of what does an architect do? How does an architect work? What are the tools that an architect uses? How does an architect create their works? What is the mental map of an architect like? In short, who is an architect? New conclusions have been drawn, via a total of eleven different characters of architects in seven films, about architects and architects’ job from the cinematographic level to Professional practiceand architectural life

Authorship in Cinema: Author & Reader
Get PDFThis study consists of an elaboration on authorship in cinema by employing the conceptions of the ‘author’ and the ‘reader’. Within the scope of this elaboration, for a better understanding of the ‘cinematic-author’, first, the literary origin of the concept of the ‘author’ will be examined. Then, ‘Who is an author in cinema?’ will be questioned both through the on-going debates about the conception and what the concept itself means to me. Finally, the focus of the study will shift to the concept of the ‘reader’ and its interdependent relationship with the concept of the ‘author’; and it will be stated that, unlike post-structuralist ideas, it is not necessary to kill the ‘author’ for the birth of the ‘reader’
