    No full text

Pore-scale numerical analysis of morphological characteristics and their influence on flow behavior in compressed virtual open-cell polyurethane foams

International audienceThis study presents a numerical investigation integrating morphological characterization and flow response analysis within a porous medium subjected to uniaxial compression. Two modeling approaches are explored: periodic cell structures and Vorono & iuml;-based stochastic models. These approaches are analyzed within the framework of XPHD (eX-Poro-Hydro-Dynamic) lubrication, which aims to replace traditional lubricants in turbomachinery guide and support systems with a more efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to minimize energy losses. Identifying optimal materials for XPHD applications presents several challenges due to the continuous interaction between the imbibing fluid and the porous structure under dynamic compression, leading to complex mechanical behaviors. Within this context, the ANR SOFITT project preliminarily identified open-cell polyurethane foams as potential candidates due to their extensive range of physical properties. This study focuses on developing a modeling methodology for open-cell foam structures, aiming to replicate the geometry of polyurethane foams to predict fluid flow behavior under specific XPHD operating conditions. This approach facilitates the evaluation of morphological parameter variations and their impact on key properties necessary for selecting the optimal material. For morphological characterization, tomographic images of polyurethane foam samples subjected to different compression rates are analyzed using the digital volume correlation (DVC) method. The extracted morphological parameters serve as a foundation for generating virtual foams, combining CAD-based modeling with morphological data to create periodic and Vorono & iuml;-based structures. For flow modeling, numerical simulations conducted using OpenFOAM are compared with experimental data acquired in a preliminary study. The flow profiles and permeability measurements derived from simulations exhibit strong agreement with experimental observations. Further analysis establishes a correlation between foam internal morphology and fluid flow behavior. Vorono & iuml;-based foams demonstrate permeability and tortuosity values closer to those of real foams compared to periodic cell structures, a difference attributed to their respective internal morphologies-random versus periodic. Periodic cell models tend to overestimate permeability due to their uniform ligament configurations, which limit flow disturbances. Additionally, the study examines the deformation mechanisms of virtual foams and their correlation with modeling techniques to assess their suitability for deformation modeling. The Forchheimer coefficient Cf is systematically lower in virtual foams than in real foams, highlighting the reduced inertial effects induced by the simplified numerical structures. The increasing discrepancy in Cf with higher compression rates confirms the influence of structural simplifications on fluid flow response

International audienceThe development of local agriculture and local food supply chains is the objective of various procedures in France: Food sector contracts, National Food Plan (PNA), National Nutrition and Health Program (PNNS), Law on the future of agriculture, food and forestry (October 13, 2014), law on sustainable food (October 30, 2018), etc. The objective is to strengthen and improve the competitiveness of the food sector, and facilitate consumer access to healthy, safe and sustainable food. This "reterritorialization" of agriculture involves building a movement to return agriculture to the territory, emphasizing new elements: new production benchmarks, new objectives and a new link to the territory. At the same time, the preservation of biodiversity is declared a priority. The National Biodiversity Strategy (NBS) is the French political response to preserve biodiversity. To achieve the ambitions set by the Global Biodiversity Framework by 2050, it proposes 40 measures focused on four areas: reducing pressures on biodiversity, restoring degraded biodiversity wherever possible, mobilizing all stakeholders, and ensuring the means to achieve these ambitions. The Bioagri-ville 2025 conference positioned itself at the intersection of these two issues:1- Reterritorialization and food sustainability; 2- Biodiversity preservation. The aim was to examine the conditions for reconciling agriculture and biodiversity in an urban context. Indeed, in cities, agricultural activity is potentially part of the urban nature supply. This agriculture also has functions other than food, since it can constitute one of the components of Green and Blue Infrastructures (TVB) – French versions of the "Green Infrastructures" implemented by the European Commission, enshrined in the Environmental Code following the Grenelle Environment Forum. This planning tool offers local stakeholders biodiversity conservation objectives. Consisting of biodiversity reservoirs and ecological corridors, TVBs play a major role in urban environments and are central to sustainable development issues. The Bioagri-ville 2025 conference aimed to identify the constituent elements of biodiversity in urban agriculture (UA) spaces to contribute to a better understanding of the services provided by ecosystems and nature-based solutions. The selected papers provided answers to three sets of questions:- What urban agriculture for what biodiversity? What do biodiversity inventories say? What knowledge is available about the biodiversity of urban agricultural spaces? What relationships can we identify in urban spaces between agricultural production systems and biodiversity? Between agricultural and horticultural practices and biodiversity?-What is the perception of urban agriculture among city technical service managers? How are urban agricultural spaces viewed by city technical service managers? How do urban agriculture stakeholders generate and use ecological knowledge to implement their projects?-How does the city integrate these urban agriculture spaces into its project? What is the role of urban agriculture in TVBs and other ecological planning? Is urban agriculture a natural space like any other, or does it have a specific relationship with the city? The Bioagri-ville 2025 conference brought together around a hundred people involved in ecology and/or land management (researchers, engineers, technicians) from the public and private sectors. It was part of the multidisciplinary research program SERANA (Ecosystemic services of agricultural spaces in the cities of New Aquitaine) financed by the New Aquitaine Region, led by the University of Poitiers (RURALITES Laboratory and UMR EBI), in partnership with UMR LIENSS and Bordeaux Sciences Agro/IRSTEA, Grand Poitiers Urban Community, Grand Châtellerault, CNRS Loire Workshop Zone, INRAE-DYNAFOR, PROXIMITES Network and Agri-ville NetworkLe développement d’une agriculture de proximité et des circuits alimentaires locaux est l’objectif de différentes procédures en France : Contrats de filière alimentaire, Plan National de l’Alimentation (PNA), Programme National Nutrition Santé (PNNS), Loi d'avenir pour l'agriculture, l'alimentation et la forêt (13 octobre 2014), loi sur l’alimentation durable (30 octobre 2018), etc.

Accountability in Public Value Crises: From the Risk of Public Value Failure to the Opportunity of Public Value Creation

    No full text
Chapitre 12.International audienceThis chapter explores the relationship between accountability in public value crises and public value creation in the context of inter-organisational collaboration. This chapter presents a comparative study of four international cases (China, France, Lebanon, and Madagascar) using a qualitative methodology. The aim is twofold: first, to explore the accountability relationships between the different actors and, second, to examine the impact of crises on public value creation. This chapter shows that, contrary to expectations, the occurrence of a public value crisis can lead to a net creation of public value if certain conditions of accountability and mediation are met. In terms of implications for practice, the importance of external mediation in rebalancing power dynamics in the aftermath of a crisis is highlighted

    No full text
International audienceIn this article, I attempt to compare two life and writing journeys, those of Zola and Capuana, through the lens of "génétique comparée". By overcoming the contradictions between comparative literature and "critique génétique", I analyse the aesthetic and poetic issues linked to the material conditions of creation, focusing on the correlations between documentation and authorial poses. It is precisely the naturalism to which Capuana and Zola belong that paradoxically illuminates the singularities of their creative processes, which, in turn, make it more complex.

Visual crowding reduces blur sensitivity in peripheral vision: A study using natural textures in Virtual Reality

    No full text
International audiencePeripheral vision plays a crucial role in extended reality by supporting immersion, navigation, and spatial awareness beyond the central field of view. However, it also presents perceptual di!erences compared to central vision, such as reduced visual acuity. One of the most significant challenges is visual crowding, where the presence of nearby elements disrupts the recognition of a peripheral target. While extensively studied in visual neuroscience, the practical implications of crowding for immersive image processing remain largely unexplored. This study investigates how crowding a!ects the perception of blur in natural textures within an extended reality environment. Participants were asked to detect blur in peripheral texture patches, presented in isolation or surrounded by similar textures. The results confirm that the presence of surrounding textures impairs blur sensitivity, with the strength of this e!ect depending on the properties of the textures. Specifically, crowding is more pronounced when the target and its surroundings are visually similar or when the central texture can be easily inferred from the surrounding content. By understanding how crowding happens in realistic scenes, this work opens new perspectives for perceptually guided rendering and compression strategies in extended reality, where imperceptible degradations can be introduced without compromising visual quality

Development of a functional assay for the characterisation of SMAD4 variants from the French haemorrhagic hereditary telangiectasia cohort

    No full text
International audienceBackground: Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) and juvenile polyposis syndrome (JPS) can be caused by SMAD4 pathogenic variants. SMAD4 is a common transcription factor of the BMP/TGFβ signalling pathway. In this study, we developed a cell-based functional assay to address the pathogenicity of SMAD4 variants identified in the French HHT cohort. Methods: SMAD4 variants were generated by site-directed mutagenesis. A functional assay was developed in a cell line that does not express SMAD4, and the different SMAD4 variants were tested for their capacity to activate the BMP and TGFβ response using luciferase reporter assays. Results: Twelve SMAD4 variants were identified and studied. We were able to develop a robust functional assay for these variants. All the expressed variants resulted in loss of function (LOF) in response to BMP9 or TGFβ1 stimulation. SMAD4 variants within the MH2 domain expressed SMAD4 mutated proteins that were unable to hetero-oligomerise with other SMADs, which could explain their LOF. Finally, we tested primary human endothelial cells isolated from patients with HHT carrying SMAD4 heterozygous pathogenic variants and observed that they behaved like the control cells at rest or when stimulated with BMP9.Conclusion: We developed a SMAD4 functional assay that allows discrimination between benign and pathogenic SMAD4 variants. We demonstrated that the underlying molecular mechanism of this pathogenicity is due mostly to a loss of hetero-oligomerisation. This assay will be transferable to clinical genetic laboratories and will improve the diagnosis of patients with HHT–JPS
