    No full text

    No full text

Microwave-Assisted Distillation of Ylang-Ylang Flowers: A Sustainable and Efficient Approach for Essential Oil Extraction

    No full text
International audienceMicrowave-assisted distillation (MAD) was compared with wood-heated distillation (WHD) and laboratory-scale distillation (LD) for the production of ylang-ylang essential oil. The yield of total essential oil collected by MAD was 29% higher than WHD and 23% higher than LD, while the distillation time was significantly reduced. Indeed, the oil was recovered within 40 min with 2.7% yield using MAD, whereas LD and WHD required 19 h. The quality of the collected fractions was EXTRA SUP (ES), EXTRA (E), grade I, II and III according to density, ester index and refractive index. MAD produced 81% high quality ES and E, 16% grade I and 2% low quality grade III fractions. WHD and LD produced approximately 15% ES, 15% grade I and 70% grade III fractions. At the molecular level, 15 compounds were identified by GC-MS according to the French ISO standard. The higher amount of odoriferous light oxygenated compounds and lower amount of sesquiterpenic hydrocarbons in ES and Grade I fractions collected with MAD confirmed its high quality. Moreover, the Grade III fraction obtained with MAD showed a high content of oxygenated compounds compared to LD and WHD

Smectic order-driven total wall defect formation

    No full text
International audienceWe study experimentally and theoretically liquid crystal structure of smectic oily streaks, focusing on planar wall defects hosted within smectic flattened hemicylinders (SFHs). The wall configuration is singular both in orientational and translational order and we refer to it as the Total Wall Defect (TWD). Here "singular" refers to nematic director field and smectic phase field. In theoretical analysis of the TWD we use a mesoscopic Landau-de Gennes-Ginsburg approach in terms of the nematic tensor order parameter and smectic A (SmA) complex order parameter field. The smectic layer structure is experimentally determined using polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements at Synchrotron facilities. We demonstrate theoretically and numerically that the experimentally observed abrupt change of the SmA layering in the centre of the wall defect is realized via nematic order reconstruction mechanism. Our experiments reveal that smectic layer spacing above and below the wall are almost similar. The theoretical analysis suggests that lateral SFH boundary conditions determine the vertical position of TWD

Exploring Stabilized Alumina Phase Coatings as a Catalyst Carrier for Oxalic Acid Hydrogenation

    No full text
International audienceThe catalytic hydrogenation of oxalic acid to glycolic acid (GA) and/or ethylene glycol (EG) has been identified as a promising route for producing value-added chemicals and potential hydrogen carriers. GA serves as a precursor for plastics and cosmetics, while EG can function as a liquid organic hydrogen carrier. In this work, we present an eco-friendly and scalable bottom-up approach to fabricate a Ru-based hydrogenation catalyst on θalumina-coated SiC foam. Nitrogen doping of the MOF(Al)-based template enhances the mechanochemical stability of the resulting alumina coating by significantly modifying its surface texture and morphology. This phasestabilization method enabled higher OA conversion compared to γ-alumina and yielded nearly equimolar amounts of GA and EG under continuous-flow conditions (120 °C, 50 bar). These findings demonstrate the potential of this synthesis approach for producing stabilized metal oxide phases with tailored morphologies that improve catalyst performance

    No full text

Outcomes After Kidney Transplantation in Antiglomerular Basement Membrane Disease

    No full text
International audienceIntroduction: Goodpasture disease, or antiglomerular basement membrane (anti-GBM) disease, is a rare autoimmune disorder that often leads to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Although kidney transplantation (KT) is the preferred treatment, concerns exist about disease recurrence and graft outcomes in patients with GBM-associated glomerulonephritis (GBM-GN). This study aimed to evaluate posttransplant outcomes in patients with GBM-GN compared with matched controls. Methods: This retrospective, multicenter study included 100 patients with anti-GBM who received KT between 2005 and 2023 in 13 French transplant centers, matched with 200 control recipients. We compared the incidence of delayed graft function (DGF), graft failure, relapse, acute rejection, and death between groups and analyzed risk factors using multivariable models. Results: No significant differences in DGF incidence (22% vs. 19%, P ¼ 0.5), graft survival (87% vs. 88% at 5 years, P ¼ 0.4), or patient survival (93% vs. 89% at 5 years, P ¼ 0.4) were found between patients with GBM-GN and controls. Patients with GBM-GN tended to have lower risk of acute rejection (hazard ratio [HR] ¼ 0.51, 95% confidence interval: 0.25-1.02, P ¼ 0.055). Only 1 patient with GBM-GN (1%) experienced disease relapse. Although patients with GBM-GN were waitlisted and transplanted later than controls, specific transplant timing was not associated with improved outcomes. Conclusion: KT in patients with GBM-GN offers comparable outcomes to other nephropathies in the current era. Disease relapse is rare, even in the few patients with detectable antibodies pretransplantation. The lower incidence of acute rejection in the GBM-GN group warrants further investigation. These findings support KT as a viable option in patients with GBM-GN, though specific pre-and posttransplant monitoring is advised

Economic resilience in Central Africa in the face of COVID-19: corruption, a hindrance or a key factor?

    No full text
International audienceContextThe COVID-19 health crisis has triggered major economic shocks globally, particularly affecting the fragile economies of Central Africa. The region, faced with institutional challenges and sometimes fragile governance, has had to implement strict health measures (lockdowns, border closures, etc.) to limit the spread of the virus. However, the impact of these measures on economic resilience remains underexplored, particularly with regard to the influence of corruption in this process. This study aims to analyze the effects of COVID-19 control measures on economic resilience in the region, with a specific focus on the role of corruption. MethodsThe study is based on an econometric analysis using panel data covering several Central African countries during the pandemic. We use Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and Triple Least Squares (TLS) regressions to estimate the impact of economic support policies, health measures, and corruption on the economic resilience index. Variables include income support, debt relief, and other health measures such as school and workplace closures. The corruption indicator is included to assess its influence on economic recovery. ResultsThe results show that income support policies and debt relief have a significant impact on economic resilience, but corruption exacerbates the negative effects on growth. Countries with higher levels of corruption experience slower economic recovery. Health measures such as school and workplace closures also have negative effects, although these are mitigated by appropriate support policies. ConclusionsThis study reveals that corruption plays a key role in post-COVID economic resilience in Central Africa. More transparent governance and stronger institutions are crucial to building resilience in the face of health crises. Recommendations include better management of public resources and the adoption of more inclusive economic policies to accelerate economic recovery.</div
