Metabarcoding outperforms traditional electrofishing in decapod and fish inventories, paving the way for enhanced biodiversity monitoring in the Caribbean

No full text
International audienceEnvironmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding revolutionized the biodiversity monitoring in aquatic ecosystems, giving access to taxonomic lists in a non-disruptive way. Although the method has limits, such as reduced taxonomic resolution for certain groups and difficulties in estimating species abundance, it has proven its effectiveness in many contexts. In Martinique, a Caribbean island, traditional methods like electrofishing (TEF) are known to be stressful for organisms, non-selective and disruptive for the ecosystem, and have been progressively abandoned for routine monitoring. The aim of this project was to explore the possibility of using the eDNA-based metabarcoding method for the detection of fish and decapods in Martinique streams, by first validating it with TEF. We selected 14 stations, a representative panel of the river diversity, and performed TEF and eDNA-based monitoring to compare both, based on the species richness. Then, from eDNA taxonomic inventories, we assessed the ecological state of the studied stations, using Simpson index and investigated how stations abiotic characteristics shape assemblages. Here, we confirmed the eDNA metabarcoding method is a reliable tool for monitoring fish and decapods, confirming most of the taxa caught by TEF and revealing the presence of additional (native and/or invasive) species. We faced some issues in discriminating some genetically close species (e.g. Sicydium sp.) potentially leading to under-representation in community assemblages, but not in functional diversity. Additional efforts are needed to raise standardized protocols, but we encourage stakeholders to join such an initiative to shed light on the rich biodiversity in sometimes poorly studied regions and to face invasions

Comparison of marker-based and center-of-pressure-based approaches for calculating the margin of stability

No full text
International audienceIntroduction: The margin of stability (MoS) is a widely used biomechanical measure of dynamic stability during gait, typically computed as the distance between the extrapolated center of mass (xCoM) and the center of pressure (CoP). According to Hof’s model, the CoP-based approach is considered the preferred approach for defining where the xCoM is relative to the BoS and calculating the MoS. However, marker-based approaches often need to be used in research and clinical settings due to practical constraints and the lack of standardization in marker selection introduces variability in MoS estimates. This study aimed to assess the difference between different marker-based approaches and the CoP-based approach. Methods: Using an open-access dataset of 30 healthy adults walking at a selfselected speed, MoS was calculated continuously during the stance phase in both the anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML) directions. Various marker-based approaches were evaluated, including commonly used markers (AP: HEEL, TOE; ML: HEEL, ANKLE, M5, MID) and a novel approach using the most anterior (for AP MoS) or most lateral (for ML MoS) marker in contact with the ground at each time point (AP: MOST ANTERIOR; ML: MOST LATERAL). Differences were quantified using paired t-tests with statistical parametric mapping and root mean square differences (RMSD) relative to the CoP-based approach. Results: Results showed that the MOST ANTERIOR approach had the closest agreement with the CoP-based approach for AP MoS (RMSD = 47.04 mm), while the HEEL marker provided the closest agreement with the CoP-based approach for the ML MoS estimates (RMSD = 17.93 mm). Conclusion: These findings highlight the importance of marker selection in MoS analysis and suggest that specific marker configurations, particularly those grounded in foot-ground contact for the AP-MoS, provide closest estimates relative to the CoP-based approach. This study offers evidence-based recommendations for improving consistency and comparability in future MoS studies using marker-based approaches

Al2O3 barrier layer for the synthesis of high-quality thermochromic SmNiO3 thin films annealed in air

No full text
International audienceThis study presents a soft synthesis method for producing thin films of SmNiO3 with enhanced thermochromic properties after annealing in air. The films were fabricated using magnetron co-sputtering under reactive atmosphere, followed by a low temperature annealing process at 550◦C for min to crystallize the thermochromic perovskite phase. Structural and chemical analyses, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), confirmed the successful formation of the orthorhombic SmNiO3 phase with lattice parameters consistent with previous studies. The thermochromic properties of the films were assessed by electrical measurements displaying an important decrease in resistivityof several decades from −263 to 250◦C, and through temperature-dependent transmittance and reflectance measurements, revealing significant optical changes in the infrared range (2.5–25 μm) between 30◦C and 190◦C. As anticipated, when deposited atop the amorphous SmNiO3 thin film, a thin Al2O3 layer effectively acted as a diffusion barrier. This approach stabilizes Ni3+ and enhances thermochromic properties compared to uncapped SmNiO3 films annealed in air. Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) confirmed a high Ni3+ concentration of ∼ 85%, enabling an emissivity modulation of >20% in the 8–14 μm range. This performance is comparable to that of samples annealed under extreme conditions (oxygen pressure of 200 bars at 950◦C). Moreover, the atmospheric-pressure process offers a scalable, industrially viable route for smart applications such as solar thermal coatings and passive radiative cooling devices

High-pressure synthesis of PbN 2 , the missing group 14 AN 2 -type compound

No full text
International audienceThe direct reaction of Pb with molecular nitrogen was investigated using a laser-heated diamond anvil cell combined with high-pressure in situ synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction measurements and Raman spectroscopy. From the results of the experiments and DFT calculations, it was revealed that a novel PbN2 was successfully synthesized above 50 GPa, and it was observed to crystallize in a tetragonal system (indexation in the CuAl2-type structure, I4/mcm), comprising PbN8 units connected via N-N dimers. Room-temperature compression and decompression experiments revealed that PbN2 retained its structural integrity up to a pressure of approximately 90 GPa, while it decomposed into lead and nitrogen at around 15 GPa. The experimental evidence indicates that the encapsulated nitrogen dumbbells act as anionic units, (N2)2- interaction with the lead lattice. The newly synthesized PbN2 exhibits a distinct crystal structure in comparison to the pyrite form of the other group-14 pernitrides (SiN2, GeN2, and SnN2) that have been previously reported. This finding provides novel insights into the high-pressure crystal chemistry of nitrogen-based compounds
