Located in the UNESCO Geopark of Haute Provence, the Duyes watershed is representative of the hydrodynamic processes of the Mediterranean peri-alpine mid-mountains with deformed sedimentary bedrock. The local archives record a major hydroclimatic event associated with ten days of heavy rainfalls affecting this valley in April 1774 with a large-scale landslide with several damages: sinking of arable land, catastrophic flooding, destruction of buildings and roads. The archives describe the events in the terms of the time: "continuous rainfall", "abundance of water from the torrents", "revolution of the earth", "openings and crevasses", etc. The documents also point out that these "strange inconceivable revolutions" were concomitantly associated with two earthquake tremors without stating if this was a cause or a consequence of the detachment of several millions tons of rock and mud masses. This event took place at the end of the Little Ice Age (LIA, 1350-1850) in the context of a densely populated rural world practicing traditional peasant polyculture in the form of mid-mountain extensive agropastoralism. The first part presents and comments the 1774 archives as an example of a geohistorian's work. The second part details the climatic and hydrogeomorphological contexts of the valley at the time based on field observations and current data, including morphometric mapping using the LIDAR digital terrain model (DTM) and torrential flood simulations. Extensive fieldworks and the expertise of the local population also form the backbone of this study. Current flood and landslide risks are briefly recalled, based on the climatology of the years 2022 to 2024, in particular in May 2023 when heavy rainfall caused gullying of dirt roads and landings at the foot of steep fields and pastures in many valley locations. This research aims to contribute to the geohistory of the environmental and human societies co-evolution, and more specifically on the interactions between hydrogeomorphological processes and the dynamics of anthropized agrofestry landscapes in Mediterranean mountain regions. It also stresses the value of practical training in “landscape reading”, following the pedagogical principle of 讀景 put forward by Professor Jiun-Chuan Lin in his magnum opus on applied geomorphology (地形學,2022).Situé dans le Géoparc UNESCO de Haute Provence, le bassin versant des Duyes est représentatif des processus hydrodynamiques des moyennes montagnes péri-alpines méditerranéennes dans un contexte géologique sédimentaire déformé.

Positivity and Negativity Biases About Animals Revealed Through Emotions, Attitudes, and Cognitive Salience in a French National Park

    No full text
International audienceHuman cognition is subject to a plethora of cognitive biases, including positivity and negativity biases, that impact human relationships with non-human life forms but remain largely underexplored. To address this gap, this study introduces an interview-based method to investigate positivity and negativity biases in people's perceptions of animal species.Conducted in France's Cevennes National Park, the study comprised 100 interviews to evaluate (i) the cognitive salience of animals via free-listing tasks and (ii) individuals' attitudes and emotions towards the listed animals. Respondents identified 154 animals, predominantly associating them with positive attitudes and emotions. Interestingly, animals evoking positive emotions displayed greater cognitive salience, while those perceived negatively ranked second in salience. These findings, consistent with other studies, underscore the significance of emotions and suggest the presence of both positivity and negativity biases. Reinforcing research on cognitive biases could help conservation practitioners better orient their action and communication with the public

Data lifecycle to support sustainable research in the Pacific

    No full text
International audienceThis communication aims to provide an overview of what can the lifecycle of research data be from collection to dissemination and reuse in all the scientific fields. This is an opportunity to present “good practices” and tools that can be useful in daily lives and daily works of researchers. This communication aims to illustrate data life cycle already settled in research projects developed in the Pacific.Data lifecycle consists of 6 stages: collection, processing, analyzing, storing, sharing and reuse. Before starting the effective collection of the data, it is very important to plan what will be done with the data throughout the project. This is the aim of the data management plan (DMP) which may and must be modified during the course of the project. Writing a clear and comprehensive DMP enables to think about how the data will comply with the FAIR principles. This is essential to process raw data if they are to be exploited. For instance, data must be checked, cleaned and validated. The analyzing stage is essential to produce scientific knowledge. At this stage, the data is usually explored in more depth using specialized statistical tools.Regarding data storage, it is recommended to diversify storage media, one of which should be off-site, like on a cloud or a repository for instance. A far as possible, research data should be shared but the right of access should also be clearly defined. Following the guiding principle “as open as possible, as close as necessary”, researchers can share open data or set access conditions. The ultimate aim of all these stages is reuse of data. This contributes to quality of research and scientific integrity, since sharing and reuse of data enable and facilitate peer-reviews, better use of allocated resources and promote the dissemination of research work. The main expectation of this communication is to make clearer to researchers the processes used in the data lifecycle. This will help to learn about “good practices” and practical tools that can be used to ensure the sustainability of research and improve its contribution towards the society

    No full text
International audienceAlthough deeply rooted in Vanuatu, little is known about the effectiveness and safety of traditional medicine. The objective of this study was to document traditional childhood practices and then provide a risk-benefit analysis of the most commonly used remedies. A total of 73 informants from two islands of the archipelago, Espiritu Santo and Efate, were interviewed through semi-structured interviews. Forty illnesses were recorded, the most commonly cited of which were diarrhea, coughs, flu, cuts, and stomach aches. Additionally, 187 unique remedies were identified, comprising a total of 99 species, of which Annona muricata, Pterocarpus indicus, Citrus x limon, Cocos nucifera, Hibiscus tiliaceus, and Macaranga tanarius are the most common. Some of these 99 plants are widely distributed in tropical countries (e.g., A. muricata, C. nucifera), while others are more specific to Vanuatu or certain Pacific locations. Despite the existence of ethnobotanical and pharmacological studies demonstrating the medicinal properties of these plants, several lack of clinical data in children persists, and further research would be needed to demonstrate their safety (e.g., P. indicus, M. tanarius), as well as for others that have not yet been the subject of in-depth bibliographic research.

    No full text

Distributions of Outputs Given Subsets of Inputs and Dependent Generalized Sensitivity Indices

    No full text
International audienceBetter understanding mathematical and numerical models often requires investigating the impacts of inputs on the model outputs, as well as interactions. Quantifying such effects for models with non-independent input variables (NIVs) relies on conditional distributions of the outputs given every subset of inputs. In this paper, by firstly providing additional dependency models of NIVs, functional outputs are composed by dependency models (yielding equivalent representations of outputs) to derive distributions of outputs conditional on inputs. We then provide an algorithm for selecting the necessary and sufficient equivalent representations that allow for obtaining all the conditional distributions of outputs given every subset of inputs, and for assessing the main, total, and interaction effects (i.e., indices) of every subset of NIVs. Unbiased estimators of covariances of sensitivity functionals and consistent estimators of such indices are derived by distinguishing the case of the multivariate and/or functional outputs, including dynamic models. Finally, analytical results and numerical results are provided, including an illustration based on a dynamic model

On the long and winding road: unravelling the late emergence of Neolithic agriculture in the Nile Delta

    No full text
International audienceDespite the Nile Delta's abundant natural resources, the emergence of Neolithic agriculture did not evolve in tandem with neighboring regions, long raising questions about the underlying factors contributing to this delay. We analyzed pollen and non-pollen microfossils of three Predynastic sites (Buto - Tell el-Fara'in, Sais - Sa el-Hagar and Kom el-Khilgan) to track the environmental factors hindering the emergence and development of herding and farming in the Nile Delta before 7000 cal. BP. High-resolution-dated microfossils showed that during the African Humid Period, the delta experienced environmental instability, characterized by remarkably high Nile discharge and rapid sea-level rise, impeding early human occupation of the deltaic plain. Sea-level stabilization and declining Nile discharge beginning ca. 7000 years ago promoted herding as an opportunistic activity in coping with and exploiting the delta's uninhabitable environmental setting. This pastoral livelihood transitioned to sedentary farming that prevailed a millennium after the deltaic setting became stable

Both environmental conditions and fisher behaviour influence the occurrence of shark and odontocete depredation on the longline catch in New Caledonia

    No full text
International audienceLarge marine predators feeding on fish caught on fishing gear, a behaviour termed "depredation", frequently results in conflicts with significant ecological and socio-economic impacts. While adjusting fishing practices through spatio-temporal avoidance of depredation may offer an expedient and cost-effective mean of mitigating the conflict, its effectiveness is often limited by a poor understanding of the underlying drivers. Using 10 years of logbook data and generalised additive models, our study identified the environmental and operational factors influencing shark and odontocete (toothed whales) depredation on tuna catches of the New Caledonian longline fishery. Odontocete depredation was primarily driven by environmental factors such as sea surface temperature, bathymetry and sea surface height, whereas shark depredation was primarily driven by operational factors like the number of hooks set and soaking time. The findings suggest that depredation is more likely to occur in areas where predator natural distribution overlaps with fishing activities, and when fishers increase opportunities for predators to locate their gear. Targeted strategies, such as reducing soaking time to under 12 hours or limiting hooks per set to fewer than 1,750, could halve the likelihood of depredation, offering practical solutions to mitigate these interactions. Modelled predictions of the spatio-temporal patterns of depredation show welldelineated hotspots of odontocete depredation that can inform avoidance strategies developed by fishers. However, large variations in depredation probabilities among vessels suggest that additional factors related to individual fishers' behaviours, or with intrinsic features of vessels influencing their detectability, need further investigation to fully understand depredation mechanisms
