Islamic Philosophy on Behaviour-Based Environmental Attitude

    Get PDF
This paper concludes philosophical elements regarding conceptual theory, and the significance of human attitude towards the environment. In a sustainable life, environmental management becomes the most crucial area to be concerned. There are many campaigns, courses and even legal enforcement to ensure the success of educating wise attitudes towards the environment. This could be more effective and will create eternal effects if the understanding of environmental attitudes would be based on religious teachings and philosophy. Not only for Muslims, these theoretical principles were described by the Holy Book, supported by the Prophet's tradition which could also be practised by all mankind. The Great Sustainer is the best provider of guidelines for interacting with all entities in our environment. In addition, they are closely related to the concept of rewards, directly or delayed. This paper highlighted a conceptual framework to be understood, in order to guide the do's and don'ts, good or bad habits and positive or negative behavior towards environmental entities, including metaphysical entities. The most important point is, this philosophy would be a platform towards designing approaches, strategies or activities towards inculcating good behavior towards the environment

Flat Layouts and Children Outdoor Activities

    Get PDF
In Malaysia's urban peripheries, where residential development still has room to expand, walk-up flats have become a popular form of low-cost housing because of their relatively low construction and maintenance costs to match the required demand of the increasing urban poor. In this housing type, standardization and spatial efficiency result in minimum dwelling space, causing life to spill to the outdoors which then becomes a vital social space for children. Appropriations of the space are an integral part of children's growing up and social experiences. The paper explores the differences in children's outdoor activities near the homes in relation to the different low-cost flat layouts through a comparative observational study. Different flat configurations were found to offer different spatial affordances for children's social experiences which could inform design decisions

CCRC Common Facility Spatial Structure: A Study by Space Syntax

    Get PDF
Spatial structure of 56 CCRCs(Continue Care Retirement Committee) which are mainly selected from AIA contest project are analyzed by using space syntax theory. Based on the result of common facility allocation and spatial centrality, three common facility allocation types and six route space integration models are defined. While the analysis shows the central allocation with route connected to a common facility being the highest integration place is the predominant spatial structure of common facility in US CCRCs, the combination of each common facility allocation type and route space integration models provide the fashion of common facility spatial structure in US CCRCs today

Challenges of Participatory Qualitative Research in a Malaysian and Australian Hospital

    Get PDF
Research in paediatric nursing, paediatric psychology, healthcare management and environment-behaviour studies suggest that there are many obstacles in completing qualitative research in healthcare settings with children and young people. As a result, the evidence from this kind of research is limited. Both authors have recently completed participatory qualitative studies with children and young people in paediatric environments, both in Malaysia and Australia. These will be briefly described and some of the practical and methodological challenges that each researcher experienced will be discussed. Each challenge has strong implications and potential impact on the research quality; and also on the children and young people's experience of research

End-Users' Sense of Home in Mass-Housing Based on Maslow's Theory

    Get PDF
"Sense of home" in mass housing depends on the degree of congruity of the environment with end-users' different motivations, which would be achieved by their participation. End-users participation in mass housing is quite challenging and critical because they are inaccessible and absent. This paper aims at investigating the interrelationships between end-users motivational factors and different participatory modes/levels. An overview of theories and concepts on human motivation and different participatory modes/levels results in explaining the degree of readability of different motivations, and the application of various participatory methods in representing these motivations

Nursery Schools: Characterization of heavy metal content in indoor dust

    Get PDF
Interior floor dust is found to be one of the major pathways of childhood exposure to indoor air pollutants. This study aims to carry out a general survey of heavy metals (Al, Ba, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni and Pb) contamination at selected nursery school buildings in Shah Alam, Selangor and to study their relationship with the surrounding environment. The samples were collected using a brush and a plastic dustpan, after which the samples were digested using the wet digestion method. The heavy metal concentration was determined by an inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). The results show that the heavy metal concentrations at the nursery school building were in the range 901.2 - 1510.0, 13.3 - 76.7, 12.0 - 22.6, 22.2 - 42.7, 1489.0 - 7919.0, 5.5 -14.4, 13.2 - 64.6, 93.3 - 220.4mg kg-1 for Al, Ba, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni and Pb respectively. The heavy metal concentration in the investigated areas followed the order Fe > Al > Zn > Pb > Ba > Cu > Cr > Ni. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was carried out to ascertain the possible contributing factors towards the metal concentrations and thereby determine which metals have a common origin. PCA analysis indicated that three factors indicated sources of mixed origin including mobile vehicles, street dust and natural sources

Effects of Nearby Nature on Urban Children's Stress

    Get PDF
The study shows empirical evidence of the moderator effect that school and nearby nature at home have on children. A total of 172 children were interviewed and data about their stress level, the amount of nature they perceived around them and frequency of exposure to adversity, was collected. The nearby nature at home and in the school for each of the children was measured using a designed scale. The results suggest that nature bolsters children's resilience so that those children who have more contact with nature cope better with adversity than those who do not have daily access to nature

    Interior Environment Enhancing Child Development

    Get PDF
The environment has been a crucial factor in determining the effectiveness of medical treatment, especially for mentally related disorders. The study uses the autistic treatment environment as a case study to examine relevant environmental factors supporting the learning process of autistic children towards an environmental design model, the improvement in behaviour, and be able to stabilize the patient's emotions. Results from the study are useful for the prognostic study of autism. The final modelling could be applied as a part of special education programs to extenuate behavioural and emotional disorders and to improve the social skills of autistic children

The Trends and Influential Factors of Children's Use of Outdoor Environments: A Review

    Get PDF
In the past two decades, there has been a raft of research on children's behaviour and their interaction with the outdoor environment. The aim of this paper is to present a synthesis of 30 studies from 1985 to 2010 on children's use of outdoor environments. The aspects taken into consideration include methodological issues and factors that influence the use of outdoor environments. The trends of the studies are discussed. In summary, the children's place preferences and play behaviours in outdoor environments are influenced by their developmental needs, and individual, physical and social factors
