Get PDFThe objective of this article is to examine the participatory planning approach to urban conservation and regeneration in Amphawa Community, Thailand which includes a series of interrelated projects starting from 2000 until the present. The action research procedure is adopted and various public participation techniques are applied intensively throughout the planning process. In addition, 'Amphawa Model', the community conservation and regeneration model are developed to help direct all strategies and policies. Urban conservation and regeneration of Amphawa Community are very successful, making it an excellent case study for urban conservation and regeneration planning at the local level
Urban Heritage Streets' Revitalizing Attributes
Get PDFThere were 911 sites including 704 cultural, 180 natural, and 27 mixed properties which were included as outstanding universal value by the UNESCO World Heritage Convention in June 2010. Malaysian cultural heritage sites, Malacca and Georgetown, were listed in 2007. Since World Heritage Lists is not an ultimate benchmark for heritage street revitalization performance, therefore, this research will provide a set of attributing variables to investigate the revitalization attributes in creating a great heritage street. The research employed an unobtrusive method of content analysis and an obtrusive method. This paper will share its findings based on the research's pilot study and document analysis

Users' Assessment on Interior Environment of a Hospital Outpatient Unit in Malaysia
Get PDFAssessment on the physical design of healthcare facilities from the perspective of the patient and their family members (user) is the method to understand their expectation, preferences and experiences. This paper reports the study conducted on an outpatient unit in Malaysia, focusing particularly on the interior design characteristics. The study adopted post occupancy evaluation technique that combines baseline analysis, occupancy survey and walkthrough observation methods. The study findings indicate that the case study, which has served the public for more than 20 years, is performing moderately on all interior design aspects. Users' assessments did not score any of the facility "good" in terms of their interior quality, suggesting the desire for improvement to the current facility

Initially, the growing student population with various learning activities has constituted risk emergence, inefficient energy use and climate discomfort. Thus, it decreases the yearly total performance of the building. To sustain building efficiency, Building Performance Evaluation (BPE) plays a vital role to improve performance issues in HEB. Institutions on Public Open Space Governance
Get PDFMeagre discussion on the institutional property-rights structure essence has rudimentarily determined the POS governance and its quality. Thus, two objectives are highlighted; (i) to examine Sabah's current practice (rights distribution) in urban-rural POS governance and (ii) to explore the POS social dilemmas that tied in with such institution. Reviews of interdisciplinary analytic perspectives, content analysis on documents and semi-structured interviews were performed. The practice with diverse property-rights structure is indicatively perceived as property-rights tragedies' which ensue in sub-optimal POS and quality of life issues. Therefore, re-engineering of POS market via dynamic property-rights re-assignment is postulated as the panacea for improved well-being
Malaysian Administrative Building Responsive Design Approach
Get PDFThe main purpose of this paper is to elucidate on the study of state administrative building in Malaysia by describing the design built form and it adaptation towards the surrounding. Using multiple case study approach, Perdana Putra and Parliament Malaysia were chosen as prominent case studies with emphasis on form and space studies. Since this paper formulates new ways to describe on state administrative building design, it uses interpretive paradigm and semiotics as the methodological approach to study the relationship between building design and sustainable aspects. Quality of Life : Public open space effects
Get PDFSince the open space quality and quantity becomes declined in many cities in developing countries, the research means to identify the relationship between the quality of public open space (POS) and quality of life (QOL) in Medan, Indonesia. The study measured the level of satisfaction of the visitors of POS by using five scale Likert Scale. The analysis shows that people perceived function as the most significant factor for POS and health as the most important aspect of QOL. Thus, there is a strong correlation between the quality of POS and the physical QOL
