Minority and Women Small Business Owners Need Increased Access to Equity Capital
The coronavirus pandemic has been disproportionately difficult for small businesses owned by women and minorities (MWBE’s). Exacerbating the problem is that MWBE’s face multiple obstacles to overcome in the process of attempting to raise equity capital, an important and necessary step to weather a business downturn in a period of recession. Congress initially addressed the equity capital challenge for MWBE’s in 2012 when it passed the JOBS Act. However, that program has turned out to be only moderately successful, and the U.S must do more to facilitate the access to equity capital for minority and women entrepreneurs, especially in light of the pandemic

Credit Market Innovations and Gross Domestic Income
In this paper I compare the effects of different credit variables on real output in the US. However, instead of using real Gross Domestic Product as a proxy for real output, I use real Gross Domestic Income. I use a VAR framework with generalized impulse response functions and generalized variance decompositions. I look at a credit aggregate and different credit spreads. I find that shocks to some credit variables can have significant effects on real output; the reaction, however, is a temporary one. Specifically, measures of the risk premium and the term premium have the most importance in explaining innovations to real Gross Domestic Income. However, in all cases the effect is a temporary one
The Role of Institution Based Trust in IoT Environment: A Theoretical Model
Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly gaining popularity at the industrial as well as personal level. This rapid adoption of IoT has created privacy, security, and other relevant concerns. In this paper, we develop a theoretical model based on the Trust-based model that can help us understand a user\u27s adoption of an IoT device
Exports of U.S. Oil and Natural Gas are Rapidly Increasing
This paper focuses on important policy issues related to oil and gas exports, and evaluates the potential effect of recent policy changes in federal law. The changes have the potential to help reverse the U.S. balance of trade deficit at the heart of the current debate on global trade. As a corollary, increased energy exports would also benefit state and local economies in energy producing and exporting states such as Texas and Louisiana
Do Incentives for REIT Executives Improve Efficiency?
Using 1998-2005 EXECUCOMP data on Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) CEOs, this study addresses some of the issues that arise when modeling CEO incentive-based compensation. The purpose is to investigate how profit efficiencies are impacted by CEO compensation and their composition of pay packages. Since a disproportionate amount of a REITs expenses are executive compensation related, this issue is particularly important. Much of the literature focuses on estimating the impact of firm and CEO characteristics on CEO compensation. We consider the more direct question of whether total CEO compensation or the mix of compensation affects profit efficiency
Michigan Case Puts Chink in Higher Education Admission Standards
This paper examines the recent April 2014 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court supporting the state of Michigan’s constitutional amendment banning the use of race as an affirmative action tool in selecting admissions to the state’s public universities. The 6-2 ruling in the case of Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action has been hailed by some as a major step in the unraveling of the policy of Affirmative Action on a permanent basis
Is the Process of Strategy Formulation Different in Complex Organizations?
This paper reviews Robert F. Grattan’s Strategic Review: The Process of Strategy Formulation in Complex Organisations (2011), by focusing on one major implied question emerging from the title of the book: “Is the Process of Strategy Formulation Different in Complex Organizations?” The author first examines the theoretical contents of Grattan’s book relative to existing and emerging literature on the strategic process by examining several theories discussed therein. The author examines the purpose and functions of strategy formulation in general and then discusses the contents of each of Grattan’s chapters as they relate this process applied to the Strategic Defence Review (SDR) process conducted by the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defence using strategic business management theory and governmental decision theory mainly based in policy analysis. Brief critical analysis of the value of Grattan’s work to the literature on strategy and the strategic process, as well as recommendations regarding the use of Strategic Review: The Process of Strategy Formulation in Complex Organisations are made. Finally, based on the review of the process of strategy formulation which Grattan relates from chronicling “what happens in large complex organizations during a major strategic review,” the author attempts to answer the major question: “Is the Process of Strategy Formulation Different in Complex Organizations?” from both proponent-based and opponent-based perspectives
Bioenergy Crops as a Promising Alternative to Fossil Fuels in Louisiana: A Geographic Information System (GIS) Perspective
Rising greenhouse gas emissions are causing climate change, and the world’s focus has shifted to the need to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. There has been a rise in the published literature on the utilization of crops for bioenergy production in Louisiana. However, very few scholarly documents have used Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to map the distribution of potential bioenergy crops in Louisiana. This study seeks to fill the void by evaluating the potential of bioenergy crops in Louisiana for energy production using GIS. Given this objective, the agricultural census data for 1999, 2009, 2019, and 2020 obtained from the U.S. Department of Agriculture were used in the analysis. The quantities of various crops produced in the state were loaded into an attribute table and joined to a shapefile using ArcGIS software. The symbology tool’s graduated option was used to create five maps representing each of the bioenergy crops in Louisiana. The findings of the GIS analysis show that some of the parishes, such as Franklin produced the most bushels of corn (13,795,416), Iberia produced the most tons of sugarcane (1,697,980), East Carroll produced the most bushels of soybean (8,237,991), Tensas harvested the most bales of cotton (80,898) and Avoyelles produced the most bushels of sorghum (630,694). The abundance and availability of crops as raw materials for energy production will translate into lower prices in terms of energy use, making bioenergy crops a promising alternative to fossil fuels. In addition, gasoline price data from 1993-2022 was obtained from U.S. Energy Information Administration. A regression model for the average annual gasoline price over the years was constructed. The results show that the average annual gasoline price variation with respect to years is statistically significant (p \u3c 0.05). This suggests that gasoline prices will generally rise despite a price drop over the years. The paper concludes by outlining policy recommendations in the form of assessing the availability and viability of other crop types, such as wheat, oats, and rice, for energy production in the state
