An investigation into the toxicity of 1,3-butadiene and its metabolite (monoepoxybutadiene) on prostate cancer cells

    Get PDF
1,3-Butadiene is a colorless, non-corrosive gas with a mild aromatic or gasoline like odor. Manufacturing, transporting and usage are the main sources of l,3-butadiene pollution in the environment. 1,3-butadiene is kno wn to be a human carcinogen based on sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity from studies in humans and animals. The primary routes of potential human exposure to 1,3-butadiene are inhalation, ingestion, and dermal contact. 1,3-butadiene is metabolized in experimental animals and human liver microsomes to epoxide metabolites, initially 1,2-epoxy-3-butene and subsequently 1,2:3,4-di epoxybutane, by cytochrome P450 enzymes. There are significant species differences in the metabolism of 1,3-butadiene both in vivo and in vitro. (NIH, 1993) Epidemiological and mechanistic data indicate a casual relationship between occupational exposures to 1,3-butadiene resulting in lymphatic and or hematopoietic cancers. ( Eight Report on Carcinogens, [ROC], 1993) In conjunction with butadiene exposure, there has been a steady decline in male fertility. One pressing question is whether or not l,3-butadiene contributes to this decline? The pro state is an important part of a man\u27s urogenital system, as the function of this organ contributes to the proper functioning of the bladder and sexual function. The prostate has two main functions; one is controlling urination, and the second is to aid in sexual acti vity. Prostate disease and other types of reproductive disorders have been linked to en vironmental toxins such as butadiene a man-made steroid

Conformational analysis of small peptides by circular dichroism

    Get PDF
Reports on peptides that are rich in D-alanine indicate that peptides with this structural motif adopt a specific secondary structure. In this study, two cyclic tetrapeptides cyclo[Leu-D-Ala], where Xaa is Glu or Lys, was studied by circular dichroism (CD). The conformational stability of these peptides was investigated by varying the temperature, solvent, pH, and concentration of the peptide solutions. When these conditions were varied, the CD measurements in each condition did not produce any significant changes. The CD of both peptides exhibits two positive CD bands at 211 nm and 222 nm and a third positive CD band below 190 nm and two negative CD bands at 200 nm and 238 nm. The general CD profile corresponds to a P-turn structure. When the conditions were varied, the CD measurements under each condition did not produce any significant changes. The results of the study indicate that cyclic tetrapeptides containing D-Ala do adopt a P-turn structure that is conformationally stable

A survey of chief financial officers concerning the importance of selected intermediate and advanced accounting topics

    Get PDF
Over the last five years, a number of professional accounting organizations have continued to complain about the quality of accounting education that is being taught at numerous colleges and universities. Many of the textbooks that are being used in accounting curriculum are believed to be a hindrance to quality accounting education. Textbooks, such as those used for Intermediate and Advanced accounting are extremely thick. There has been some debate over whether or not certain topics that are currently being taught to accounting students should be eliminated. In order to find out which accounting topics were necessary for success industry, I designed a survey that targeted the chief financial officers of the top fifty companies in the Baton Rouge area. The survey allowed the chief financial officers of a particular industry to rate accounting topics according to importance for success in that industry. The survey listed twenty accounting topics that are currently being taught in Intermediate and Advanced accounting textbooks. The chief financial officers in different industries gave different ratings for different topics. Therefore, I have reached the conclusion that the information in accounting textbooks is relevant and should not be eliminated. Whie knowledge of some of the topics discussed in accounting textbooks may not be important for success in one industry, it may however, be important for success in another industry. The limitation of vital information in accounting textbooks may cause a loss in job opportunities for those students who have not learned the information that is necessary for success in the business world

The PCI compatible junction temperature monitor

    Get PDF
The purpose of this research project is to give a precise temperature reading of various semiconductor devices. An accurate junction temperature measurement could allow you to eliminate heat sinks and fans if they are not needed or it could prevent your system from going down on a hot day. Nearly all integrated circuits contain input protection diodes to protect against static electricity. These diodes can be used to make the measurement process simple. The only procedure that is required is to disconnect one wire leading to the device to be tested. The junction temperature monitor is then connected to the two ends of the disconnected wire and ground. The voltage change across the diode is measured and related to a mathematical temperature equation. The Junction temperature monitor does not affect the operation of the device

    Alkebu - Lan in antiquity

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to address the problem of the underdevelopment of Afrikan (Black) History. As well, it serves to shed light on the misleading teachings of Western Idealists. In order for the History of the World to be accurately accounted, it is imperative that the underdeveloped history of the Blacks be devised and constructed, as according to the true record of Alkebu-Lan (African) of past glories. Therefore, it is the aim of the author, as a New Afrikan scholar, to help in the process of solidifying the foundations laid by great Black historians such as Cheikh Anta Diop, John Henrik Clarke, and Theophile Obenga

    High-energy ball milling of polymers

    Get PDF
With metallic materials, the mechanism of milling is generally regarded as a combination of fracturing and cold-welding of powder particles. The same general mechanism is expected to apply polymers, but some aspects of the mechanism may be different for polymers due their chainlike molecular nature, lower moduli, and higher sensitivity to temperature. In spite of some potential problems some researchers have recently demonstrated that milling can be used to produce polymers and blends with acceptable mechanical properties. C. Bai and associates used high-energy ball milling at three temperatures on poly (ethylene terephthalate) and produced favorable results. Spontak et. al. cryogenically milled poly/methymethacrylate with various other polymers to create mechanically alloyed polymer blends
