The Concept of Self in Indian Philosophy and English Romantic Literature: A Comparative Exploration

    Get PDF
This paper undertakes a comparative philosophical-literary exploration of the concept of self as it emerges in Indian philosophical traditions—particularly Advaita Vedānta and Sāṃkhya-Yoga—and in the works of major English Romantic poets such as William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Percy Bysshe Shelley. While the Romantic tradition posits the self as both a source of poetic creativity and as a reflective, often solitary, consciousness engaging with nature and the sublime, Indian philosophical systems present the self (ātman) as a deeper ontological reality—pure, unchanging, and ultimately non-dual. Through a close reading of selected Romantic texts and primary Indian philosophical sources, this study examines whether the Romantic ideal of the poetic self aligns with the Vedāntic notion of self-realization (mokṣa) or remains trapped within a limited egoic frame. Special emphasis is placed on the tension between emotional subjectivity and metaphysical universality, and on the moral-aesthetic implications of this tension. The paper argues that Indian metaphysical insights enrich and critique the Romantic valorization of the poetic ego, inviting a reconsideration of selfhood not as expressive individuality but as spiritual unveiling. This interdisciplinary inquiry opens a productive East–West dialogue at the intersection of literature, philosophy, and consciousness studies

Numerical Literacy Orientation and Mathematical Problem-Solving Skills among Senior High School Students

    Get PDF
While problem-solving skills are critical for academic and lifelong success, limited research explores how factors like numerical literacy orientation and sex influence these skills among senior high school students, particularly in the Philippine context. Grounded in Mathematical Cognition Theory, this study aimed to investigate the predictive power of sex and numerical literacy orientation on students' problem-solving skills. Using a correlational design, a total of 70 respondents participated in the study and employed stratified simple random sampling in the selection of the respondents. Data were collected using a contextualized instrument adapted from published international research, with face and content validity established through expert validation and pilot testing. Multiple linear regression with dummy coding for sex was used for analysis. The findings revealed a moderate level of numerical literacy orientation and a high level of problem-solving skills among students. Numerical literacy orientation was significantly related to problem-solving skills. Moreover, both sex and numerical literacy orientation significantly predict problem-solving skills, with numerical literacy orientation being the stronger predictor. Female students outperformed males in problem-solving skills. The study underscores the importance of fostering numerical literacy in curricula and addressing gender-specific learning needs to enhance problem-solving competencies

The Harmony of the Society and Art in Sudha Murthy's Children's Literature

“Art is not what you see, but what you think and feel about the world’’---- Edger Degas. It is said that art and culture are deeply connected. They cannot exist without each other. Art is the creative expression of human emotions, thoughts, and experiences, while culture is the shared way of life of a group of people — including their traditions, beliefs, civilization, way of life, values, and customs. Art reflects culture, and culture gives meaning and direction to art. The relationship between art and culture shows how people express who they are and how they live. Art grows out of culture. Every society creates its own forms of art — paintings, music, dance, literature, architecture, and crafts — that represent its history and identity. For example, Indian classical dance expresses devotion and spirituality, while folk songs reflect the joys and sorrows of rural life. Similarly, art from different countries shows the diversity of their cultural experiences. Through art, people preserve their culture and heritage and pass it on to the next generation. The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life of our souls’’------ Pablo Picasso Culture also shapes how we understand and value art. What one society considers beautiful or meaningful may differ in another culture. For instance, tribal art focuses on community life and nature, while modern art often expresses individual emotions and struggles. This shows that art is not only a personal creation but also a social and cultural product. At the same time, art influences culture, tradition, heritage and civilization. It can change people’s ideas, inspire social movements, and create unity. Artists use their work to question injustice, promote peace, and celebrate human dignity. In this way, art becomes a powerful force for cultural growth and transformation. When people experience art — through stories, music, or images — they connect with emotions and ideas that help them understand their culture better. The relationship between art and culture is therefore both reflective and dynamic. Art mirrors the culture from which it arises, and culture evolves through artistic innovation. Together, they help humanity record its past, understand its present, and imagine its future

Impact of Silver Nitrate on the Antioxidant System of Rosa canina L.

Dog rose is a plant species known for its strong antioxidant properties, primarily due to its high content of biologically active compounds. Silver nitrate (AgNO₃) is widely used in plant biotechnology as an ethylene action inhibitor, capable of delaying senescence and promoting plant development, as well as an antibacterial agent. However, silver ions can also exert phytotoxic effects by inducing excessive production of reactive oxygen species, potentially disrupting cellular homeostasis and causing oxidative stress. In this study, we investigated the effect of silver nitrate on the antioxidant system of Rosa canina L. We measured the activity of ascorbate oxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, guaiacol peroxidase, ascorbic acid, vitamin P, and thiol-containing compounds to assess both enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant responses. Guaiacol peroxidase activity increased at all concentrations of AgNO₃, indicating activation of enzymatic defense mechanisms. The content of vitamin P increased at 10 and 50 mg/L, while ascorbic acid levels decreased at all concentrations. The concentration of high-molecular-weight thiols decreased at 50 mg/L. These findings provide valuable insights into the modulation of the antioxidant system in dog rose under silver-induced stress, highlighting the potential of R. canina as a model for studying plant responses to metal ions exposure. The obtained results may be useful for optimizing micropropagation protocols of R. canina and related species, as well as for using this system as a model to study metal-induced oxidative stress in plant tissues in vitro
