Integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to the Library and Information Science Curriculum: The Practicum in Library Schools in Rivers State
The study investigated the Integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to the Library and Information Science Curriculum: The Practicum in Library Schools in Rivers State. Descriptive survey design was used with a population 374 comprising 21 LIS educators and 353 Four Hundred Level Library and Information Science Students from University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, and Ignatius Ajuru University of Education Port Harcourt. Census sampling technique was used to select the LIS educators and purposive sampling technique was used to the select the Four Hundred Level LIS students. Questionnaire and checklist were used for data collection. 90% and 97% responses were found valid for analysis for LIS Educators and LIS students respectively. The study was analyzed using mean rating, standard deviation and simple percentage. The study revealed that ICT courses were integrated into LIS curriculum in Library schools in Rivers State but LIS educators lacked the ICT skills to teach ICT practicum consequently, the students were not properly taught ICT practicum. However, students had positive perception of ICT practicum. Notwithstanding, lack of ICT skills, poor policy implementation, lack of state-of-the-art infrastructure and nonchalant attitudes of staff towards the adoption of ICT constituted the challenges faced in the implementation of ICT practicum. The study therefore, recommended that the management of library schools in Rivers State should implement ICT practicum by hiring competent staff maybe from computers science department to teach the practicum for the interim. Subsequently, recruitment of librarians should include strictly ICT compliant
Utilization of Electronic Information Resources and Their Influence on Reading Culture of Undergraduate Students in Federal University Dutse
A cross sectional survey method was used to determine the utilization of e-resources and their influence on the reading culture of 119 undergraduate students registered with the JD Amin library of Federal University Dutse. The data collected was analysed using both descriptive (frequency counts and means) and inferential statistics (regression analysis). The research found that databases (mean=4.00) and e-journal (mean=4.00) are available to the undergraduate students. It further found that e-resources are often utilized by the undergraduate student, with social media (mean=4.00), databases (mean=4.00) and e-journal (mean=4.00). the most commonly used e-resources. It was also found that erratic power supply (mean=3.91) and inability to seek, obtain and evaluate information (mean=3.67) are the prominent factors hindering the utilization of e-resources. The regression analysis rejected the null hypotheses of the study where it shows that the level of utilization of e-resources have positive statistical correlation (r=0.772) with the reading culture of undergraduate students. The study proposed a conceptual model for the sustainable reading culture of students by libraries providing of e-resources. The general conclusion of the research is that e-resources are necessary tools and are moderately available and adequately utilized for influencing reading culture. The study recommended that Internet facilities should be made available to undergraduate students to facilitate more utilization of e-resources
KNOWLEDGE SHARING AMONG SCHOOL LIBRARY PERSONNEL IN NIGERIA: HOW DO DIGITAL AND MEDIA LITERACIES INTERFERE?
The study investigated the contributions of digital and media literacies to knowledge sharing among school library personnel in Nigeria. The survey research design was adopted for the study while questionnaire was used to collect data from the 190 respondents that constitute the sample size for the study. Findings from the study revealed a high level of digital and media literacy skills possession by the school library personnel surveyed. Producing information, evaluating digital information, and finding digital were major media and digital information literacy skills that significantly contributed to knowledge sharing among the school library personnel. The study recommended that adequate attention should be given to the development of digital and media literacies of school library personnel in Nigeria to ensure effective and efficient knowledge sharing
A Comparative Bibliometric Analysis and Visualization of Indian and South Korean Library and Information Science Research Publications During 2001–2020
The paper aims to present a comparative analysis of scholarly research output in the fields of Library and Information Science (LIS) in India and South Korea.
The Web of Science database was used to retrieve the bibliographic data of the Indian and South Korean LIS published documents during 2001–2020 and the indicators were included in the analysis: research productivity, publication-quality, most prolific authors, institutions and journals, “Annual Growth Rate (AGR)”, “Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR)”, “Relative Growth Rate (RGR)”, and “Doubling Time (DT)”. All types of documents such as articles, conference papers, book reviews, corrections, editorial materials, so on were included in the study. MS Excel, VOS viewer, and bibliometrix (R-tool) software were used for tabulation and mapping.
The results show that South Korea placed the top in the overall output of LIS research publications during the last two decades. The Indian LIS research output, Annual Growth Rate (AGR), and Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) were good compared to South Korean LIS publications. In addition, the South Korean LIS researchers’ output has increased rapidly in terms of publications, citations, average citations. Gangan Prathap (India), Seyoung Lee, and Heejin Lee (SK) are the most prolific authors; Indian Institute Technology, Delhi and Yonsei University, Seoul are the most prolific institutions; and the Scientometrics journal was the most preferred journal by the Indian and South Korean LIS researchers during the study period.
The results of this study are useful to administrators, policymakers, and academics. In addition, the scope of this study might include looking at research published by LIS scholars in India and South Korea, as well as examining all types of academic publications
A Case Review for the Design of VR-based Training for Enhancing Empathy and Cultural Competency of Public Librarians
The importance of cultural diversity and competency in library services has been gradually increasing along with rapid growth of international residents (3.3% of total population) in South Korea. Along with a multicultural population, marginalized communities including disabled persons, financially disadvantaged persons, and seniors over 65 years old are growing. To fulfill the South Korean government’s goal of becoming an Innovative Inclusive Nation, public libraries and librarians need to better prepare for these significant changes and work to become more socially inclusive. While librarians need to continuously promote cultural competence, empathy, communication and other critical skills through their professional development training, studies show that little of such training exists in South Korea. In this study, we review related literature and analyze three example cases of Virtual Reality (VR) simulations developed for service-oriented professions, nurses, dentists, and teachers, for the purposes of providing core foundations and best practices to guide the design and development of training programs for pre- and in-service librarians. In the midst of an ongoing pandemic, and the advent of the metaverse and Fourth Industrial Revolution, VR-based, online and mixed face-to-face professional development are likely to become more in demand and will help librarians to become future ready and socially inclusive
The Scholar Relation Analysis Map Using Linked Open Data on the Research Platform of the Research Information Sharing Service (RISS)
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic facilitated opportunities for contact-free (or “contactless”) academic activities. In particular, academic activity has become active on online platforms, and researchers have demonstrated a growing tendency to search information more accurately and conveniently on the platforms that carry numerous academic information. In 1998, the Korea Education and Research Information Service (KERIS), a research institute funded by the Ministry of Education, developed a platform that shares and collects academic research information, namely, the Research Information Sharing Service (RISS). The RISS platform encompasses all domestically-produced research information and the overseas research information. The RISS consists of union catalogues service, inter-library loan service, dCollection system, research information analytics service, and overseas theses information service. The RISS has accumulated not only the domestic theses and dissertations but also various academic data over the past two decades. There has also been an increasing demand for easily obtaining the platform data added in real time. As such, using the liked open data (LOD) through the RISS, the KERIS has linked data with others and formed a useful environment for using data to help the researchers with conducting their academic activities. By analyzing and processing the data produced on the RISS platform and reflecting the users’ patterns of uses, the KERIS has implemented a new scholar relation analysis map (“SAM”) service. Quantum Sensing Research: A Scientometric Assessment of Global Publications during 1991-2020
The study presents a global research scenario in the domain of quantum sensing in quantitative and qualitative terms. The study is based on an analysis of 588 global publications in the field, sourced from the Scopus database for the period 1991-2020. The study identified key countries, organizations and authors, network collaborative linkages at national, institutional, and author level. In addition, it identified broad subject areas intersecting quantum sensing research, key journals for research communications, and broad characteristics of highly-cited papers. The study finds that the USA and Germany lead the world ranking in quantum sensing research with a combined share of 50% to the global output. The USA, Germany, and Italy are the home countries to 13 of the top 15 most productive organizations, and also the home countries to 14 of the top 15 most productive authors in the subject. The top journals publishing most research publications are Physical Review A, Physical Review Letters and New Journal of Physics. However, in the most cited journals list in the subject, Agriculture & Forest Meterology, Science and Physical Review A tops the list
Identifying the Relationship between Students Computer Hardware Skills in the Use of Electronic Information Resources in University Libraries in South-West, Nigeria
This study determined relationship between students’ computer hardware skills in the use of electronic information resources in University libraries in South-West, Nigeria. This study adopted correlation research design involving simple and multiple linear methods. The population of this study is 85,526. The sample for the study was 398. Proportionate sampling techniques were used to draw the sample. The findings revealed that there is a moderate positive and significant relationship between the students’ computer hardware skills and their use of EIR in university libraries. Also, there is a moderate positive and significant relationship between the students’ computer software skills and their use of EIR in university libraries in South- West, Nigeria; and there is a high and significant relationship among students’ computer hardware skills, computer software skill and their use of electronic information resources in the university library in South-West, Nigeria. Based on the above findings, the study recommended among others that undergraduate students should enhance their computer hardware skills since it is related with the use of electronic information resources in the universities. Perception on Plagiarism among Faculty Members and Research Scholars in Dindigul District: A Study
These papers surveyed on the Awareness and perception plagiarism by the respondents in higher educational institutions in Dindigul District, Tamil Nadu. . The 500 questionnaires were distributed among the participants, 456 questionnaires were filled, and returned for usable by the respondents and remaining not replied. The responses rate is 91.2%. Further among 222 ‘Male’ respondents 11.18)of them are having ‘Aware’, 10.75% of them in ‘Learning’, 10.53%) are with ‘Fair’ and 76(16.23%) of them are “Expert’. Similarly out of 234 ‘Female’ respondents, 16.45% of them has ‘No Idea’, 7.02% of them are having ‘Aware’, 10.09% of them in ‘Learning’, 8.99% are with ‘Fair’ and 8.77% of them are “Expert’
Digital Literacy Skills and Utilization of Online Platforms for Teaching by LIS Educators in Universities in Rivers State, Nigeria
The study investigated digital literacy skills and utilization of online platforms for teaching by LIS educators in universities in Rivers State, Nigeria. The study was undertaken as a descriptive survey design. Three research questions and three hypotheses guided this study. The population of the study was twenty-six Lecturers from the three universities in Rivers State where library and information science are offered. The twenty-six constitute the sample size. Census sampling technique was adopted for the study. The instrument titled Digital Literacy Skills and Utilization of Online Platform for Teaching Questionnaire (DLSOPUQ) was used to elicit information from the respondents. Twenty-six copies of the questionnaire were administered and retrieved. Mean (x̅) was used to analyze the research questions and the null hypotheses was tested with t-test at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed that there is no significant difference between digital literacy and utilization of online platforms for teaching by LIS educators in universities in Rivers State. Further findings revealed that LIS educators do not have the necessary skills to navigate the online environment for teaching without assistance. In conclusion LIS educators should be innovative and update their skills to meet up with global practice. It was recommended among others that LIS educators should be trained and retrained by the university management to cope with online teaching and provision of the right infrastructure by governments for effectives teaching and learning process
