A Study on the Development of Library ESG Management Evaluation Indicator and the Evaluation Result of Library ESG
In this study, the library ESG evaluation indicators specialized for libraries were developed, and based on which, a survey was conducted targeting the actual libraries to evaluate the ESG level of libraries. As a result of the study, first, among the ESG evaluation indicators, the indicators of the social field and the governance field are demonstrating high in which field of the library's ESG evaluation indicators will appear the highest. The social area's high score of 3.70 seems to be because the protection of users' rights, occupational safety, and contribution to society and the local community are very closely related to the original role of the library. Second, it may be seen that there is a difference between the questions in the corporate governance part, while the averages are the same. In the case of library's cooperation, it turned out that it was 3.94 in the necessity evaluation of the evaluation indicators, but it was lowered to 3.61 in the actual library situation evaluation. Meanwhile, in connection with the activities of the director of library and the board of directors, it may be seen that the index evaluation increased from 3.32 to 3.58 in the actual evaluation
Perception of Library Personel Towards Socal Media Utilization for Information Service Delivery in University Libraries in Kwara State
The study examined perception of library personnel towards social media utilization for information service delivery in kwara state university library. It adopted the descriptive survey design with population consisting of 27 professional librarians in three selected university libraries in kwara State. Total enumerative sampling techniques were used because the population of the study is manageable by the researcher. Percentage and mean were used in analyzing the data. Primary data solicited would be cleaned, coded and entered into the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20 software for quantitative analysis. The findings of the study revealed the services rendered by library professional in university libraries in Kwara State, are Current Awareness Services (CAS), Photocopying services, Technical Services, Circulation/borrowing services, Internet services, and Bibliographic verification services. Majority of the respondent indicated Myspace, Google plus, Flickr, Telegram, Twitter, WhatsApp and Facebook are the social media platforms used for service delivery by librarians. Also, majority of the respondents in university libraries indicated Google plus, LinkedIn, Myspace, Skype, WhatsApp, Flickr, WeChat, Twitter and Facebook as social media space use for information service delivery effectively and Bandwidth problem, Limited fund, Lack of maintenance culture, Lack of Awareness, Copyright Issue, Technophobia are the major challenges inhibiting the use of social media for service delivery by the library staff. Lastly, the study concluded with recommendations
Influence of Job Motivation on Effective Job Performance of Library Personnel in Universities
This study investigated the influence of job motivation on job performance of library personnel in university libraries in Oyo State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design type was used for the study. The population of the study consisted of 164 library personnel in university libraries in Oyo State. An adapted questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. The data collected were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. PPMC were used for hypotheses testing at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that the level of job performance of library personnel among university libraries in Oyo State was high ( =2.85) and that the level of job motivation (promotion, compensation, conducive work environment) of library personnel among the sampled universities was also high ( =2.77). More so, the findings of the hypothesis disclosed that there is a significant and positive relationship between job motivation (p= 0.029 < 0.05) and job performance of library personnel among universities in Oyo State. It was recommended that library leadership should make provision for motivational ingredients that can serve as an encouragement for the library personnel to enhance the level of their job performance
A Study on the Measure for Improving the Website of ScienceON
This study was conducted for the purpose of deriving the existing ScienceON elements and reorganizing them to increase user convenience and utilization. Towards this end, implications were derived by analyzing the current status of the ScienceON’s website, case studies and analysis of major similar institution websites, and user satisfaction surveys. Based on the derived contents, key terms were analyzed and redefined, the menu system was reorganized, and the menu names were redefined, and the menu system was reorganized to match the direction and identity of the redefined ScienceON. The study results based on such are as follows. First, the ScienceON’s brand selection criteria and direction were based on service sustainability, service inclusiveness, recognition of portal characteristics, user friendliness and intuitiveness. Considering the meaning of branding, branding strategy, and selection criteria for ScienceON branding, ScienceON, Ontong ScienceON, ScienceONPlatform, science information portal, ScienceON, Mecca of science and technology information, and 5 brand names such as ScienceON were proposed. Second, to improve accessibility, usability, and satisfaction, it would be necessary to redefine current terms. Towards this end, it would be necessary to change the terminology of knowledge infrastructure search and to unify and organize the terminology. Third, in the current menu, the services provided as analysis services and curation services are organized in the beta service menu, and data such as papers, patents, reports, and trends are also serviced only through integrated search, and hence, each data type and service type classification must be improved
Exploring Social Media Technologies Awareness and Use among Postgraduate Students of Library and Information Science in Nigeria: An Investigative Study
The prominent role accorded to social media in the academic community for research, teaching and learning revolves around its significance among users. Social media offers a platform for individuals to engage with and share perceptions relating to different disciplines. This current research was conducted to investigate the level of awareness and frequency of social media technology use among postgraduate students of Library and Information Science in Nigerian universities. The descriptive survey design was used for the study. Structured questionnaires were used to collect data from 919 library and information science (LIS) postgraduate students in the universities. In all, 742 copies out of the 919 distributed were returned and found usable, thereby making the return rate to be 81%. Data collected were analysed using mean and standard deviation. The study revealed that the LIS postgraduate students frequently use social media such as Wikipedia (x=3.94>3.50), Instagram (x=3.86>3.50), Facebook (x=3.85>3.50), Zoom (x̄=3.78>3.50), LinkedIn (x=3.69>3.50), YouTube (x̄=3.54>3.50), Twitter (x=3.52>3.50). The study established that students use social media tools for their personal, professional and research activities. The study also found that the level of awareness and use of social media by the students was high. The study recommended that the use of social media should be incorporated into the LIS curriculum including training sessions for the students on how to use the media effectively
Awareness and Application of Internet of Things in Universities Libraries in Kwara State, Nigeria
The study was conducted on the awareness and application of internet of things in universities libraries in Kwara State, Nigeria. the study formulated used four research questions and used eighty five (85) samples as the population using total enumerative sampling techniques. A survey method was used in undertaking the study, in which answers were sought on the level of awareness of the internet of things in universities libraries in Kwara State, the extent of application of the internet of things in universities libraries in Kwara State, the benefit of internet of things in universities libraries in Kwara State, the challenges faced in the application of internet of things in universities libraries in Kwara State. The data collected from the study were analyzed using frequency tables and percentage. The study discovered that there the students are aware of the internet of things in universities libraries in Kwara State and the benefit of internet of a things include: Device in the IoT platforms are heterogeneous and are based on different hardware platforms and networks, It gives the high level of interoperability and interconnectivity, IoT platform has sensors which detect or measure any changes in the environment to generate data that can report on their status or even interact with the environment, IoT comes with the combination of algorithms and computation, software & hardware that makes it smart and Anything can be interconnected with the global information and communication infrastructure and the study identified data interpretation problem, Lack of skilled and specialized workers, Cost and Challenges in online security as well as Software complexity are major challenges faced in the application of internet of things in universities libraries in Kwara State. In conclusion the study made some recommendations which include that: Future libraries should be equipped with new technologies and networking devices as soon as possible. As this will be essential for users and librarians to have sufficient knowledge about IOT technologies
Computer Literacy Skills as a Determinant of Electronic Reference Sources Utilization among Selected Secondary School Students in Ado-Odo Ota Local Government, Ogun State, Nigeria
The study investigated computer literacy skills as a determinant of electronic reference sources utilization among selected secondary school students in Ado-Odo Ota Local Government, Ogun State, Nigeria. Four specific objectives with conforming research questions guided the study. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprises of SSS3 students of the three selected Community Secondary Schools in Ado Odo Ota. A sample size of 150 was used for the study. The instrument for data collection was a self-developed structured questionnaire. Data collected was analyzed using frequency and percentages. Findings of the study revealed that majority of secondary school students were not aware of the availability of electronic reference sources. It also revealed that the level of their computer literacy skills was below average. Majority of them have never used computer before and the few of them that have used computer before used it in their homes, their friend’s homes or in the cyber café. It was found that lack of formal training on the use of electronic reference sources, lack of access to computer, lack of awareness of availability of electronic reference sources, lack of funds for internet subscriptions, over dependency on printed reference sources and lack of motivation to use electronic reference sources were the major hindrances to the use of electronic reference sources among secondary school students. It was recommended that the school librarians and teachers should play a role in creating awareness among secondary school students about the availability of online/ electronic reference sources among others
Enhancing Global Research Visibility of Faculty staff by the Academic libraries in Public Universities in South East, Nigeria
Academic libraries are at the forefront of supporting their parent institutions in teaching and learning, research activities, and community services for the students and faculty members, but, the researchers observed that some of the researches emanating from faculty members in academic institutions particularly universities remain largely unknown, unrecognized and invisible on the global scene. This present paper is therefore a modest attempt towards highlighting some of the ways/channels of enhancing the faculty research visibility in the institutions of higher learning by the academic libraries. It also examines the extent academic libraries in public universities in Nigeria use research visibility channels to increase the global visibility of their faculty members. A descriptive survey research design was adopted and the population consisted of all the librarians in public universities in South-East, Nigeria. 120 librarians responded to the online questionnaire which was used for data collection. Data for the study was analyzed using tables, percentages and charts. The study recommended creation and utilization of RVCs – Facebook, IR, Twitter, Blog, YouTube, WhatsApp, Telegram among others by librarians in academic libraries to enhance global research visibility of faculty and the institution
Awareness as Correlate of Undergraduate Students’ Utilisation of Library Software in Universities in South-West, Nigeria
This study investigated the awareness and utilisation of library software by undergraduate students in universities in South-west Nigeria. The descriptive research design of the ex post facto was adopted using a sample of 1,527 selected from the total population of 239,048 undergraduate students in the universities. A questionnaire was used to collect the data. The finding of the study revealed that the extent of utilisation of library software by undergraduate students was high. Also, the majority of undergraduate students utilised library software in the university libraries between two to three times a week. Similarly, the findings show that awareness had an influence on the utilisation of library software by undergraduate students in the universities (r = 0.563, N = 1333, P < 0.05). The study concluded that awareness influenced the utilisation of library software by undergraduate students in universities. The study, therefore, recommends that the importance of the awareness of library software should be emphasized in the library to enhance its utilisation by the students in the university libraries
Facilitating Conditions and the Use of Plagiarism Detection Software by Postgraduates of the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria
Plagiarism detection software is beneficial in detecting plagiarism in research works of postgraduate students. Despite the benefits of using plagiarism detection software, studies have revealed that most students, including postgraduates, do not use plagiarism detection software as expected. This could depend on the provision of facilitating conditions like internet connectivity, training opportunities and electricity. Thus, this study examined facilitating conditions and the use of plagiarism detection software among postgraduates of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria.
A descriptive survey research design of the correlational type was used for this study, with a population of 2143 postgraduates. The multi-stage random sampling technique was used to determine the sample size of 242. The questionnaire was the research instrument, and data was analysed using descriptive statistics.
Results showed that most postgraduates agreed that the university provided facilitating conditions like internet connectivity. The majority of the respondents noted that they used Turnitin monthly. Most of the respondents noted that they used plagiarism detection software to paraphrase their work and check the correctness of the grammar in their documents. The most prominent challenges confronting plagiarism detection software use by most respondents were their inability to afford subscription payment to use the plagiarism detection software and slow internet connectivity. There was a significant positive relationship between facilitating conditions and the use of plagiarism detection software by the postgraduates of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria.
Some of the recommendations for the institution’s management include leveraging the vast network of alumni willing to give back to the institution and intervening in the provision of internet connectivity and electricity
