Violence and crime ::a public health perspective /
This book examines the critical connections between criminal justice and public health perspectives on violence and crime. Violent crime involves not only criminal justice agencies, but social agencies, community groups, and public and private healthcare organizations. The authors provide a broad overview of prevalent forms of violence, focusing on how criminal justice and public health perspectives converge in the examination of and response to these issues. The book looks at the nexus of public health with problems as varied as assaultive violence, child abuse, rape and sexual abuse, interpersonal violence, elder abuse, suicide, police violence, teenage bullying, workplace violence, firearm injuries, and opioid addiction. The authors lay out a structure for an epidemiological approach to studying violent crime and offer policy recommendations for using both criminal justice and public health approaches to prevent violence. This volume spotlights the connections between violent crime and public health and urges a consideration of public health in efforts to prevent and control violent crime. It is ideal for courses on violence in criminology, criminal justice, sociology, and social work, and an invaluable tool for practitioners, policymakers, researchers, advocates, and community volunteers in criminal justice, public health, and social service
Muslim women and Islamic family law ::lived experiences in Britain /
"This book investigates the practice of Islamic family law among Muslim women in a minority context. Muslims living as a minority often practise Islamic family law in a private capacity, following customary laws from their countries of origin. The invocation and operation of law in this context is, however, understudied and little understood. In response, this book provides an empirical study of the practice of Islamic family law in Britain. The book analyses the lived experiences of Muslim women and their interactions with the processes of marriage and divorce. Focusing centrally on Muslim women's agency and legal consciousness, the book is based on in-depth interviews with Muslim women and with relevant professionals, as well as observations of Shariah council hearings and the analysis of related documentation. The book thus offers a rich and nuanced account of how Muslim women currently navigate marriage, marital discord, dispute resolution, divorce and post-divorce, offering insights that will better facilitate just outcomes for them. This book will be of interest to scholars, students and researchers in the fields of Islamic family law in minority contexts, as well as legal practitioners, policymakers and community activists working in this area"-
NON-STATE SPECIAL OPERATIONS ::capabilities and effects.
This book examines how violent non-state actors (VNSAs) emulate and develop military special operation capabilities.Building on previous research on Islamic State special operations, the book develops a theoretical framework surrounding a typology of VNSA (militants, proxies, criminal/cults, and mercenaries) to explore variations of non-state special operations, with multiple cases for each category of actor. Understanding when and why VNSAs use special operations provides insights into the inner workings of such groups and how they campaign and also has implications for the proliferation of special operation forces around the globe and its influence on non-state behavior. This volume contributes to research on the recent trend of non-state actors surprising, and in some cases humiliating, their state opponents. This book will be of much interest to students of military and strategic studies, defense studies, and security studies

Causation in criminal law ::a research companion /
"This collection presents a leading contribution in the substantive arena relating to Causation in Criminal Law. Extant law reveals significant problems in adoption of consistent approaches to doctrinal and theoretical underpinnings of legal causation and culpability thresholds. This has been exemplified by a plethora of recent jurisprudential authorities revealing varying degrees of confusion and vacillation. A variety of Law Commission proposals, although emboldening the debate, have yet to be adopted in any logical template. The volume addresses three specific elements within this arena, embracing an overarching synergy between them. This edifice engages in an examination of UK provisions, with specialist contributions on domestic law, and in contrasting these provisions against alternative domestic jurisdictions as well as comparative contributions addressing a particularised research grid for content. The comparative chapters provide a wider background of how other legal systems treat a variety of specialised issues relating to causation in the context of the criminal law. With contributions from leading experts in the field, the book will be an invaluable resource for researchers, academics, and practitioners working in Comparative Criminal Law and related areas"-
Just price theory ::historical perspectives and contemporary insights /
"This book presents an interdisciplinary approach to just price theory, focusing on the conceptual and normative (moral, legal, and political) implications of the concept of the just price. This volume brings together world-leading experts in the fields of political and legal philosophy to explore the political economy of justice in pricing and socio-legal aspects surrounding the idea of just prices. Divided in two parts, the first set of essays explores the relevance of various normative criteria that might serve as a benchmark for assessing market prices from the standpoint of justice. The second part of the book addresses some of the institutional factors that are relevant in discussions about justice in pricing, exploring the role that legal and social norms play in evaluating whether market institutions are justice-preserving or not. Perfect for scholars and students in the fields of jurisprudence, ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of economics, and private law theory"-- Provided by publisher
Economic regulation of airports ::a private law approach /
"This book explores airport charges regulation, presenting a fresh perspective on a crucial yet marginalized subject. Providing a clear pathway for regulation of the economic aspects of airports, specifically charges, the book employs an adaptable approach grounded in private law principles. Unlike the conventional command-and-control model of traditional regulation that once governed airports, the book contends that an agile private law approach offers a more responsive and efficient means of overseeing airport charges in the face of increasing complexity within the industry. Within this overarching approach, two key instruments emerge. Firstly, the book demonstrates the effectiveness of contracts as a powerful tool for integrating regulations on airport charges. Secondly, the cultivation of robust corporate governance is posited as a mechanism that naturally instigates effective regulation. Through illuminating the efficacy of a private law approach, the book demonstrates how this innovative approach works not only as a regulatory mechanism for airport charges, but can also be applied within the broader spectrum of infrastructure regulation. The book will be of interest to researchers in the field of air law, contract law, corporate law, competition law, and aviation business and management, employing case studies to illustrate its points"-- Provided by publisher

NORMALISING PRIVATE MILITARY FORCE ::us media discourse and the legitimization of private... security companies in iraq.
This book examines the normalization of Private Military and Security Companies (PMSCs), and analyses US media discourse around the Nisour Square incident in Iraq as a pivotal case.States are increasingly relying on PMSCs to meet security needs. As a sign of ongoing normalization, these companies are now increasingly targeted by soft law or self-regulation. Rejecting the common claim that 'mercenaries have always been with us', this book sets out to analyse the underlying conditions that have allowed PMSCs to emerge in their uniquely contemporary incarnation. Divided into two parts, this book develops a novel poststructural framework of analy-sis to articulate social, political, and affective conditions that enabled PMSCs to prevail despite controversy. It draws on and operationalizes the Essex School's logics-based approach, while developing it further with corpus linguistics, and ap-plies this framework to a large corpus of American mainstream media articles. The volume contributes to efforts aiming to overcome the alleged 'methodological deficit' of discourse analysis, while highlighting the importance of making uncon-sciously held truths visible. This book will be of interest to students of private security companies, military studies, critical security studies, and International Relations
Cultural autonomy and political participation ::minority elections in Central and Eastern Europe /
"This book provides a comparative, theoretical and empirical understanding of the possible role of elections to minority councils and self-governments, local variants of national-cultural autonomy bodies in five East-Central European countries. The functions and effects of elections serve as analytical tools that enable the book to provide a realistic overview of minority political participation in this particular institutional channel and empirical evidence on the extent to which existing normative expectations towards national-cultural autonomy are met within these arrangements. Using the elections of cultural autonomous bodies in Croatia, Estonia, Hungary, Serbia and Slovenia as examples, the book examines how these rather understudied institutions specific to minority councils and self-governments affect the lives of national and ethnic minorities, how they approach them and how they are established in each country. In the post-Communist environment that fundamentally rejects autonomy, these organizations are still officially referred to as autonomies, whereas they often function more like consultative-advisory bodies. The book traces this process from the adoption of autonomy, through the polling booth, to the operational level, without avoiding sensitive issues raised by these autonomies, such as what is commonly known as ethno-business. Focusing on topical issues such as minority representation and participation, the book will be of interest to a broad group of international academics, researchers and policy-makers working in the areas of Minority Studies, Legal Studies, Political Science and Anthropology"-
