No full textChristian Brothers College lies under one of the flight paths leading into the Memphis International Airport. In the 1970s, a welcome message adorned the roof of the gymnasium for any air traveler who happened to be looking down while flying into Memphis.
Also visible in the aerial photo are Fairview Junior High School, the Memphis Coliseum, and the Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium
Engineering Grads
No full textEarnie Marie Houston (not pictured), Elaine Ashby (left), and Wendy Tetley (right) were among the first female engineering students accepted to Christian Brothers College and the first female engineering students to graduate. Houston and Tetley were the first to transfer from Siena College to CBC. Houston served as the president of the Association of Women Students and the Organization for Black Leadership and Brotherhood, the treasurer of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the student government senator. Tetley focused on surveying in her civil engineering studies. Seen posing with Tetley is Ashby, who was named Miss Engineering for the City of Memphis, won the local mechanical engineering award in 1974, and won a grant from Stanford in 1974. Houston’s and Ashby’s senior mechanical engineering seminar project can be found in the reference section of the Plough Library

Linda Shanks, CBC's First Female Graduate
No full textOf the initial forty women to be admitted to CBC, Shanks was the first to graduate, as well as being CBC's first female scholarship recipient.
In addition to gender diversity, she also brought ecumenical diversity, being a Baptist. She and her husband had moved to Memphis, and wanting to complete her college education, she appreciated that CBC would allow her to transfer her credits in Baptist theology. While she knew she was one of the first woman admitted, she did not realize she would be the first to receive a degree
