In 1975, Diane Gagnon was just a freshman in mechanical engineering at Christian Brothers College when she was chosen to be Miss Engineering by the Memphis Joint Engineering Council and hosted Engineers’ Week. She graduated from Millington Central High School, where she won first place in the Voice of Democracy contest and was named to the Hall of Fame.
Paul Miller explained Gagnon was chosen to inform the public about the welfare of mankind through the art and science of engineering. He was the Chairman of this Engineering Week with credentials as a supervising engineer, chairman and senior member of Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers, and advisory board member of Electronic Technology.
Mrs. William Pollard was the party chairman, and Mrs. Roger Nolte was the auxiliary president of the Memphis Ladies Auxiliary to the Memphis Chapter of the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers, the group that created National Engineering Week. Mrs. Roger Nolte explained that Gagnon was chosen to dispel misconceptions about engineering
