The M. K. Gandhi Institute for the Study of Nonviolence was created as a research and educational resource center based on the nonviolence principles of Mohandas Gandhi, Arun Gandhi’s grandfather. The Institute was founded and staffed by Arun Gandhi and his wife, Sunanda Gandhi, the Institute was in their home owned by CBU, and the classroom space and seminar facilities were at CBU. The Institute also housed a collection of Mohandas Gandhi’s writings, which were temporarily held at the Plough Library. Arun Gandhi frequently spoke at CBU about nonviolence, a message he would also share with the wider community and internationally. After the passing of his wife in 2007, the Arun Gandhi moved to be closer to his daughter, moving the Institute as well.
Before founding the Institute, Arun Gandhi was a journalist in India and Sunanda Gandhi was a nurse helping abused women and abandoned children. The two of them were also involved in projects to assist India’s lowest caste and impoverished populations
