    No full text
In 1996, Dr. Juan Carlos Olabe (left) was captured receiving his Service Award from Brother Michael McGinnis (right). Dr. Juan Carlos Olabe was chairman of the electrical engineering department at Christian Brothers University. Dr. Olabe spearheaded a project to give CBU more visibility and find the limits of modern technology. A part of this plan was his participation in one of the first live video and audio broadcasts by a university in 1997, and future broadcasts hope to see other countries tuning in. As a proponent of online and distanced learning, Dr. Olabe participated in a pilot program where he would lecture to a classroom at CBU while he was working on leave in France. In 2015, he earned the title of Distinguished Lasallian Educator. Brother Michael McGinniss was the president of Christian Brothers University from 1994 to 1999. During his tenure, enrollment increased, infrastructure was upgraded, the Masters of Education Program was established, the Athletic Department joined the NCAA Division II Gulf South Conference, and the Center for Global Enterprise was founded

Announcement of The Challgner Learning Center at CBU

    No full text
Children are wearing white shirts that read “Lift off with the Memphis Space Center / Partners in science and math education” and have a logo in the center with a green base and blue sky, picturing a pyramid with a banner circling it and stars above it. Mixed in with the kids are City Schools Superintendent Gerry House, Shelby County Mayor Jim Rout, Memphis Mayor W. W. Herenton, and another man all holding a remote with one of the kids to set off a rocket. They are all in a group lined up behind a stage covered in a blue tarp with five model rockets. The far right rocket has already lifted off leaving only smoke, and the man of the far right does not have a remote but seems celebratory. In 1995, Christian Brother University was chosen to host the Challenger Learning Center. The Challenger Center program was established by the families of the seven astronauts who died in the Challenger disaster in 1986, creating a memorial, legacy, and educational opportunity for students. The Memphis Space Center, a non-profit educational agency, was housed on CBU and decided to administer the Learning Center with CBU, helping to teach kids how to prepare for their own simulated space mission and study topics like space navigation and space-probe assembly. It was the 25th Center built in cities in the U.S. and Canada
