Patient-Centered Care vs. Evidence-Based Care in Renal Patients
To evaluate if patient-centered care provides a better quality of life for patients with a new diagnosis of end stage renal disease. Also, evaluating the different effects of evidence-based care and what interventions are not considered to be more effective or have a difference on the quality of life in patients
Interdisciplinary Treatment of Parental Co-occurring Disorders in the Child Protective System
The purpose of this study was to conduct a summative program evaluation regarding a presentation to child welfare workers about interdisciplinary collaboration and the treatment of parental co-occurring disorders within the Child Protective Services (CPS) system. It was hypothesized that a program related to systemic inefficiencies would be relevant to child welfare workers. A 45-minute program was developed and delivered to child welfare workers. Participants (n = 11) completed a survey following the presentation. Responses indicated that all participants were ""likely” or ""very likely” to encourage participation in the program, and program importance was rated as a mean score of five out of five. Relevance and content additionally received mean score ratings of 4.9 out of five. Themes emerged from qualitative responses, including participant desires to increase solution generation and interdisciplinary collaboration. These responses indicate a need for increased training and interdisciplinary collaboration among counselors, social workers, and other child welfare workers
Propofol Usage During SARS-CoV-2 Associated Shortage
As a result of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, a scarcity occurred of the sedative drug propofol. One hospital addressed this shortage by directing its anesthesia staff to reserve larger, 50 milliliter (mL) vials of propofol, and instead utilize smaller, 20 mL vials of propofol for routine surgical cases. This project sought to determine the effects of these propofol shortage guidelines upon anesthetic practice. A retrospective chart review comparing pre-shortage data from January 2020, intra-shortage data from June 2020, and post-shortage data from December 2020 was performed. Participants were randomly selected adults aged 40-65 years undergoing colonoscopy procedures. No statistically significant difference was found between the amount of propofol, versed, or ketamine administered over the time periods examined. A significant difference was found in the amount of intra-shortage compared to post-shortage fentanyl (p = .001). There was a significant difference in the costs of propofol, versed, ketamine, and fentanyl in a pre-shortage timeframe compared to an intra-shortage timeframe (p < .01). There was also a significant difference in the costs of propofol, fentanyl, and ketamine between intra-shortage and post-shortage timeframes (p < .01). These results indicate that the propofol usage guidelines did not produce their intended goal of reducing the amount of propofol utilized during routine surgical procedures such as colonoscopies
Effects of Journaling on Student Focus in Middle School Choir
The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of journaling on student focus in middle school choir. Participants included 44 middle school students. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected to assess student focus pre-implementation of journaling and at the end of a 13-week journaling period. Quantitative results indicated that journaling had a significant effect on focus of male students. Qualitative results indicated that journaling seemingly had a significant effect on focus of all students. Quantitative data were collected to assess student journal entry quality at the beginning of journaling and at the end of journaling. Journaling was used for five minutes daily by half the students while the instructor worked with the other students. Then students switched roles for another five minutes. In some cases, journaling in middle school choir class appeared to have positive effect on student focus in middle school choir, although the results of this study required further research to justify their validity. The researcher found journaling to be an effective tool to improve student focus and planned to continue student reflective dialogue journal implementation in middle school choir class

Benefits of Breast Milk with an Added Fortifier in Premature Infants
To assess the effectiveness of growth and neurodevelopment in adding fortifier to breast milk compared to formula in premature infants
Auditory Privacy in the Emergency Department
While protecting privacy in every healthcare setting is important, patients continue to report frequent breaches in auditory privacy (AP). Breaches in AP can damage the rapport between the patient and provider and can increase the incidence of negative health outcomes, diagnostic errors, and staff burnout. The aim of this project is to answer the research question: Among staff working within an emergency department that interact directly with patients, does an educational video focused on the issue of AP, improve staff awareness and motivate them to modify their practice to improve patient's perception of AP. This is a two group pre- and post-intervention study. Chi-square analysis of staff surveys indicates positive feedback in support of the educational video. There was a statically significant (p < .001) improvement in the understanding of AP among staff following education. While there was improvement in patients' perception of AP, the results were not statistically significant. The sample size, novel measurement instruments, and a limited timeline, were likely responsible for the lack of statistically significant results. Improving understanding and awareness of AP is an important step in improving patient perception of AP. This project demonstrates that small interventions with minimal cost can have a statistically significant and beneficial impact. While these results are difficult to generalize due to the specialized nature of the project, they may highlight the importance of AP and motivate others to further investigate this phenomenon
