WAS THE DOLLAR TREE – FAMILY DOLLAR MERGER SYNERGIC? FINANCIAL STATEMENTS ANALYSIS
Purpose- Family Dollar and Dollar Tree were the second and the third largest firms in the discount variety store industry in the United States of America. In July 2014, Dollar Tree made an offer to acquire Family Dollar, citing potential synergy. In this study, we examined whether the expected benefits from the Dollar Tree-Family Dollar merger materialized. Methodology- We examined the pre-merger and post-merger performance of the two companies by analyzing the companies’ annual financial statements. Improvements in performance of the merged company should be reflected in better financial ratios for the post-acquisition period compared to the pre-acquisition period. Conclusion- Our analysis of financial statements indicates possible synergy in the merger of Dollar Tree and Family Dolla

Enhancing international performance is a critical issue for internationalizing SMEs. Researchers have suggested that firms need to enhance their international market orientation (IMO) in order to increase performance; but the way this association works is rather unexplored. This is important for both theory and practice since its exploration would lead to a better understanding on how SMEs can effectively enhance their international performance. In this paper, we examine whether alliances through which firms access knowledge and resources play a mediating role in the IMO and performance relationship. We investigate our hypothesis on a sample of 94 companies based in the United Arab Emirates. We discovered that alliances mediate the IMO-performance relationship and we extend the knowledge- and resource-based views of the firm

Teaching an old dog new tricks: Investigating how age, ability, and self-efficacy influence intentions to learn and learning among participants in adult education.
Affiliation Clayton State UniversityParticipation in adult education and adult learning are two important areas of research
as more and more adults seek learning opportunities, via academic institutions or organizational training programs, in their quest to achieve their various goals. Thus, it is important that educational (and business) leaders are aware of the dynamics surrounding the learning process of the “older generation” so that reasonable steps can be taken to facilitate their success in acquiring and retaining required and/or desired knowledge and skills. Numerous factors play a role in individuals’ decision to participate in adult education and in the learning process they experience. This paper will investigate the influence of age, ability and self-efficacy on adults’ intentions to learn and actual learning from educational/training programs. A conceptual model, implications for educators and educational leaders, and suggestions for future inquiry will also be presented
