    Rhythm in mother-infant interactions

    Rhythmic behavior and the association of vocal rhythmic behavior with language development were studied in a sample of 30 motherinfant dyads. Dyads were observed in 2 contexts (1 involved sharing pictures and the other sharing musical toys) when infants were 18 and 24 months of age. Vocal rhythmic behavior was seen in both contexts, and in both contexts mothers matched their infants vocal rhythmic behavior at greater than chance rates. Greater matching tended to be associated with higher language scores whereas, counter to prediction, higher rates of maternal vocal rhythmic behavior tended to be associated with lower language scores. At 24 months of age, motherdaughter dyads showed more matching than motherson dyads. These results suggest that differences in maternal production of vocal rhythmic behavior may foster different language learning strategies

    Impervious Surface and Macroinvertebrates in the South Atlanta Metro Are

    Studies utilizing volunteer stream monitoring data are rare, particularly in in the Atlanta metropolitan area. This study investigated how the macroinvertebrate communities of 20 different stream sites in the south metropolitan Atlanta area were affected by the imperviousness of their surrounding watersheds. These sites were in a diverse landscape which included forests, wetlands, suburban day-use parks, and parking lots. Percentage impervious surface area was measured using Geographical Information System (GIS) analysis. Macroinvertebrates were collected using Georgia Adopt-A-Stream’s volunteer monitoring protocols, and a water quality index (WQI) was calculated from these data. The relationship between WQI and imperviousness was curvilinear and best fit by a quadratic equation. In watersheds having more than 8% imperviousness, WQI clearly decreased

    Preparing Ethical Chemists through a Sophomore Seminar Course

    Ethics is an important part of science and is often omitted from a packed undergraduate curriculum. This paper describes a sophomore seminar course developed for chemistry majors that focuses on career preparation and the improvement of essential student skills, such as communication skills and preparation for independent research. The central unifying theme of our course was scientific ethics. The seminar course offered multiple opportunities for students to evaluate, share, and develop an understanding of scientific ethics. Through this course we have demonstrated that sophomore students, who typically lack a higher understanding of chemistry, can still be exposed to, discuss and understand ethical ideas. The work completed by the students, including discussions and presentations, demonstrated their understanding of ethical concerns in a scientific environment and has better prepared them for advanced undergraduate work and their future careers in science

    Initiation and Development in Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God

    Like most works written after World War1, Their Eyes Were Watching God expresses the freedom Hurston yearned for and the hurdles to attain success and happiness in a world fenced on all sides by sturdy walls of separation and domination. At the backdrop of a society rife and rank in male domination is racism. Although Hurston has often been associated with the Harlem Renaissance and was unpopular among her contemporaries because her novel was believed not to deal with the social realism that characterized literature of her era, her works, especially Their Eyes Were Watching God were tailored to the difficulties of her life and those of black women in general. She was criticized for not dealing with politics and for not exposing the social injustice that exists in the world. Her worst criticism came from Richard Wright who characterize her novel as follows: “the sensory sweep of her novel carries no theme, no message, no thought. In the main, her novel is not addressed to the Negro, but to a white audience whose chauvinistic tastes she knows how to satisfy. She exploits that phase of Negro life which is "quaint," the phase which evokes a piteous smile on the lips of the "superior" race” ("Between Laughter and Tears," The New Masses).     Distance Magic Cartesian Products of Graphs

    A distance magic labeling of a graph G = (V,E) with |V | = n is a bijection ℓ : V → {1, . . . , n} such that the weight of every vertex v, computed as the sum of the labels on the vertices in the open neighborhood of v, is a constant. In this paper, we show that hypercubes with dimension divisible by four are not distance magic. We also provide some positive results by providing necessary and sufficient conditions for the Cartesian product of certain complete multipartite graphs and the cycle on four vertices to be distance magic

    Electrochromic Properties of a Polythiophene Bearing Dithiinoquinoxaline Units in the Repeat Unit

    The synthesis and electropolymerisation of a new terthiophene, 1,3-di-2-thienylthieno[3′,4′:5,6][1,4]dithiino[2,3-b]quinoxaline, is reported. The compound bears a quinoxaline unit fused to the central thiophene ring via a 1,4-dithiin ring; the latter unit ensures a non-planar structure for the molecule. The corresponding polymer, prepared electrochemically, has been characterized by cyclic voltammetry and UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry. The material is oxidised within the conjugated chain, but the reduction processes are complex and arise from both the polythiophene and the independent quinoxaline units. The polymer has two distinct colour states—orange in the neutral form and green–blue in the oxidised state. Electrochromic studies on poly(1,3-di-2-thienylthieno[3′,4′:5,6][1,4]dithiino[2,3-b]quinoxaline) reveal fast switching speeds that are superior to those of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and a colouration efficiency of 381 cm2 C−1 at 650 nm

    Classification error of multilayer perceptron neural networks

    In subject classification, artificial neural networks (ANNS) are efficient and objective classification methods. Thus, they have been successfully applied to the numerous classification fields. Sometimes, however, classifications do not match the real world, and are subjected to errors. These problems are caused by the nature of ANNS. We discuss these on multilayer perceptron neural networks. By studying of these problems, it helps us to have a better understanding on its classification
