Partnering Academics and Community Engagement: A Quality Enhancement Plan for a Diverse and Non-Traditional University

    No full text
Research suggests that application of theoretical perspectives, specific program principles and components, and various institutional models of service learning, can positively affect persistence and completion for college students. Academic community engagement provides such an application, as well as a vehicle for professional interaction between community partners and faculty members, and is the theme for our university-wide quality enhancement plan (QEP). This paper describes our QEP roadmap from conception through the first four years of our five-year initiative, detailing the work done to align with the university’s strategic goals; incorporate flexibility, coordination, and partnerships; ensure authentic projects that benefit community partners and students (traditional and non-traditional); and assess impacts on the institution, students, and community. We describe various types of community partnerships and provide specific examples of lower-level and upper-level undergraduate courses designed and delivered, in a variety of academic programs and disciplines, as well as lessons learned from our experiences

An Equity-Focused Assessment of Evidence-Based Parenting Intervention Research

    No full text
Evidence-based parenting interventions (EBPI) support children and families to promote resilience, address emotional andbehavioral concerns, and prevent or address issues related to child maltreatment. Critiques of EBPIs include concerns abouttheir relevance and effectiveness for diverse populations when they are implemented at population scale. Research methodsthat center racial equity and include community-based participatory approaches have the potential to address some ofthese concerns. The purpose of the present review was to document the extent to which methods associated with promotingracial equity in research have been used in studies that contribute to the evidence base for programs that meet evidentiarystandards for a clearinghouse that was developed to support the Family First Prevention Services Act in the United States. We developed a coding system largely based on the Culturally Responsive Evaluation model. A sample of 47 papers that arepart of the evidence base for ten in-home parent skill-based programs were reviewed and coded. Only three of 28 possiblecodes were observed to occur in over half of the studies (including race/ethnicity demographic characteristics, conductingmeasure reliability for the study sample, and including information on socioeconomic status). Although the overall presenceof equity-informed methods was low, a positive trend was observed over time. This review highlights ways in whichrigorous research can incorporate racial equity into the planning, design, execution, and interpretation and dissemination ofprograms of study. We posit that doing so improves the external validity of studies while maintaining high-quality researchthat can contribute to an evidence base

Extralegal factors and the sentencing of organizational defendants: An examination of the Federal Sentencing Guidelines

    No full text
The Federal Sentencing Guidelines were developed to provide uniform and standardized punishments for eliminating sentence disparities based on legally irrelevant factors. While research at the individual level showed that extralegal factors continued to affect sentence outcomes, no such research determined if these factors influenced sentencing of organizational offenders. This article extends the unit of analysis beyond the individual and toward organizational offenders to determine if total fine amounts are affected by extralegal organizational characteristics. Relying on post-1991 organizational defendant's data, the findings indicated both legal and extralegal factors significantly affected fine outcomes for organizational offenders. As expected, several legal factors significantly affected fine outcomes. At least two extralegal variables, economically solvent and closely held organizations, however, exerted significant effects in predicting the total fine amount imposed. Similar to research at the individual level, this study indicated that extralegal or legally irrelevant factors had some level of impact upon sentencing under the guidelines
