Alternative Compensation, Teacher Performance & Retention: An Equity Theory Approach
This paper proposed equity theory as a potential theoretical framework that may be considered to underpin an alternative compensation modelthat can work for teachers in the K-12 system in the United States. Thisapproach may help with ensuring teacher performance and retention. The current compensation system adopted in many districts needs to bere-designed and should consider introducing an alternative compensationmodel to boost performance and to retain high quality teachers in thenation’s classrooms
An Evolutionary Algorithm Approach for the Constrained Multi-Depot Vehicle Routing Problem
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to explore a real world vehicle routing problem that has multi-depot subcontractors with a heterogeneous fleet of vehicles that are available to pickup/deliver jobs with varying time windows and locations. Both the overall job completion time and number of drivers utilized are analyzed for the automated job allocations and manual job assignments from transportation field experts.
Design/methodology/approach
A nested genetic algorithm (GA) is used to automate the job allocation process and minimize the overall time to deliver all jobs, while utilizing the fewest number of drivers -as a secondary objective.
Findings
Three different real world datasets were used to compare the results of the GA vs. transportation field experts’ manual assignments. The job assignments from the GA improved the overall job completion time in 100% (30/30) of the cases and maintained the same or fewer drivers as BSL in 47% (14/30) of the cases.
Originality/value
This paper provides a novel approach to solving a real world vehicle routing problem that has multiple variants. While there have been numerous models to capture a select number of these variants, the value of this nested GA lies in its ability to incorporate multiple depots, a heterogeneous fleet of vehicles as well as varying pickup times, pickup locations, delivery times and delivery locations for each job into a single model. Existing research does not provide models to collectively address all of these variants

Dance Class #2: Romeos and Juliet
The adventures of best friends Julie, Lucy, and Alia continue in the second “Dance Class” graphic novel. School is in session again and this time the girls are working on the ballet “Romeo and Juliet.” When new student Tim is cast in the role of Romeo, the three girls find themselves competing for his affections. Can they get this production on its feet without ruining their friendship
Examining the Perceptions of Clinical Competence of Undergraduate Nursing Students During the Era of Social Distancing
BackgroundCOVID – 19 caused sudden and dramatic changes in nursing education during the spring of 2020. Traditional educational methods were rapidly replaced with distance learning and virtual simulation. The authors of this study were concerned with the impact of these changes on undergraduate education and conducted a study to examine students’ perceptions of their clinical competence with the use of virtual simulation given social distancing guidelines.ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to examine undergraduate nursing students’ perceptions of their clinical competence and simulation effectiveness after implementation of distance methodologies and use of virtual simulation for learning clinical skills.MethodThe study design was cross-sectional and descriptive. A non-random sample of undergraduate students completed two questionnaires examining clinical competence and simulation effectiveness.ResultsData were analyzed using descriptive statistics, frequencies, independent t-tests and Pearson’s correlations. Participants were 19-55 with a mean age of 29.2(9.9). Participants were mostly seniors (56.1%), female (82.5%), and African-American (60.7%). Fifty-eight students completed the entire Clinical Competence Questionnaire (CCQ) with a mean of 4.4 (SD 0.35) on a scale of 1 to 5. Scores on the CCQ were significantly higher for senior level students, those who were employed in healthcare settings, and students who had experienced some learning in a clinical setting. Fifty-seven students completed the Simulation Effectiveness Tool (SET) with a mean of 2.31 (SD 0.47) on a scale of 1 to 3. Scores on the SET were positively correlated with scores on the CCQ.Conclusions Students reported high levels of clinical competence and positive perceptions of confidence after use of virtual simulation as a learning tool. The findings of this study provide support for the use of virtual simulation for teaching clinical skills
Permanence of abode in Igbo culture: A Source of cognitive dissonance for Igbo immigrants relocating to Nigeria
Igbos have the distinguishing characteristics of entrepreneurship, property acquisition/accumulation, fortune hunting, mobility and permanence of abode. The last two, mobility and permanence of abode, appear to be contradictory, but not for Igbos. Our focus in this paper is on the impact of the permanence of abode on Igbos. It is our contention that permanence of abode has had both a stabilizing and a destabilizing impact on Igbo people. We present how this feature can be a blessing especially with regard to identity development (Erikson, 1970) and a flip on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs between a sense of belongingness on the one hand and physiological and security needs, on the other (Maslow, 1943). We also argue that permanence of abode causes cognitive dissonance which manifests in inability to fully participate in one’s host community, politically, socially, and even economically. These give rise to contradictions in the life of Igbo immigrants, a people who believe that “ebe onye bi ka o na awachi,” which literally means that one takes care of where one lives or in common English usage “where you live is your home”. Yet Igbos in the US, and everywhere outside Igboland, are always thinking of somewhere else as home and always preparing to return home. Thus, they exhibit dual loyalties, dual citizenship and dual financial and social responsibilities to Igboland and to a host community against the backdrop of offspring that considers itself American who only plans to visit, but never relocate to Nigeria.
