27, 1927 – August 10, 2015, were eternally joined on August 10, 2015. They were long-time residents of Pauoa Valley. 
Toby was a graduate of Farrington High School. Following graduation, he worked at Ronwill Distributors, Ault Supply, 
and Colgate Palmolive before starting a long and successful career with Bristol-Myers as their District Manager for 
Clairol. In his youth, Toby was a sportsman and participated in boxing and barefoot football. He was also an avid golfer 
and enjoyed weekends with his family camping and fishing. He was an active member in several golf and fishing clubs. 
Jeanette was a graduate of Roosevelt High School and attended business college where she received her secretarial 
degree. She worked and retired as a Secretary at Occidental Underwriters. Jeanette enjoyed bowling, Hawaiian 
quilting, crocheting and was an avid reader. They are survived by daughters, April (Myles) Akamine and Gale (Larry) 
Park; grandchildren Lisa (Aaron) Imai, Christopher (Joy) Akamine, Sean (Tammy) Akamine, Larry Kanani (Kela 
Kitashima) Park, Malia (James) Kau, and 7 great grandchildren. A Celebration of Life for two lives well-lived and well-
loved will be held on September 22, 2015, at 5:30 p.m., at Nuuanu Memorial Park. Visitation will begin at 4:30 p.m.

KOSEKI, KENNETH MASAO, On August 20, 2015, a hero of the 'greatest generation' passed away. He was 93. A very 
dedicated family man who cared about his country and his community, he set high standards for himself and inspired 
all those who were associated with him. His community service included the following: President of the Honolulu 
Association of Life Underwriters as well as the State president. National Committee chairman for 3 years. President of 
the City Bank Founder's club for 5 years. Chairman of the Hawaii Chapter for independent businessmen for the 
American Cancer society. Born April 10, 1922 in Kohala, on the Big Island to Chuzo and Chiyo Koseki, he was the 
youngest of 5 children. He helped his family on the farm until Dec. 7, 1941 when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. He then 
volunteered for the 'Nisei' combat group which became the famous 442nd Regimental Combat Team. He served as a 
combat medic in Europe and was awarded a medal for bravery, 'beyond the call of duty.' He was an avid golfer and 
swam at San Souci beach everyday with his wife of 65 years, Betty Toyoko Koseki. They were part of a group called the 
'San Souci litter pickers' and had several articles written about them in the paper and also received a 'certificate of 
appreciation' from then councilman Duke Banum for their community service. He worked as an independent agent for 
Occidental Underwriters of Hawaii for 39 years and was a Life Member of the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT). Ken 
loved his plants and was quite proficient in making 'Bonsai' plants from rocks and driftwood that he found on the 
beach, and he delighted in sharing them with friends and family. 'He was a warrior, never complained about his 
condition and cared about all who helped him at the end. He didn't die, he just 'ran out of breath'...' He is survived by 
one son, Clayton M. Koseki. Services will be held at Hosoi Garden Mortuary on Saturday, September 26th, at 4:00 pm,

AHUE, ISAAC KU’ULEIALOHAKAIOKALEPONI, On September 3, 2015, another quiet hero of the greatest generation 
passed away. He was 96 years young and lived a life of dedication, loyalty, and love. A kind and loving soul, Ike was 
fiercely dedicated to family and duty. He set a high standard for himself, inspiring those around him. A no-nonsense 
guy, he told it like it was. If you were in the wrong, he'd set you right; and, if you were doing right, you were the 'best-
est.' Ike loved his family deeply and was loved greatly in return. As Chief Engineer with the Military Sea Transportation 
Services (MSTS), he held the rank of a U.S. Navy Captain. At one time he was one of only two marine engineers licensed 
to operate any ship across the Seven Seas. Throughout his 30-year career he received many commendations, always 
with great humility and great humor. On one occasion he saved a sinking ship that had already been abandoned by the 
Captain. When asked why he did so he humorously responded, 'the water was too cold to jump in, so it was better to 
run it aground.' Doing so not only saved the ship, but hundreds of crewmen still aboard. Born in Hana, Maui on April 
17, 1919 to Charles and Mary Kahinu Kaleo Ahue and grandson to James and Louisa Tilton Kaleo, Ike was a proud 
graduate of Kamehameha Schools, Class of 1938. He was predeceased by his first wife of 38 years, Matilda 'Tillie' 
Wahinealoha Lee and 8 of his siblings. He is survived by 2 sisters, Angela (Richard) Rother, Gloria (Eddie) Heu; Rose 
Marie Large, his second wife of 36 years; daughters, Julie (Tyrone) Toussaint, Haidee (Les) Benedict; stepson, Scott 
(Terri) Kidd; 4 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren; and extended Ohana. Services: September 12, Forest Lawn

THOMAS, EDWARD 'ED' KEAWE, In the early morning hours of September 3, 2015, Edward 'Ed' Keawe Thomas passed 
away in his home in Aiea, Hawaii. Ed lost his struggles with medical issues. He was just 50 years old. Ed was born at 
Kapiolani Hospital on March 6, 1965. He was the youngest of the five children of Elizabeth 'Lani' Maielua Thomas and 
Frederick 'Fred' Thomas. Ed graduated from Castle High School and was an avid sports follower. He was the primary 
care giver for his father Fred and his beloved mother Lani, until her passing in 2001. Ed was preceded in death by his 
mother Lani and his older brother Michael. Ed is survived by his father, Fred Thomas of Aiea, Hawaii; his older brother 
Raymond Thomas (Dawn) of Honolulu, Hawaii; and his older sisters, Laura Pravettoni (Peter) of Lewisville, Texas and 
Debbie Thomas (Denise) of Tucson, Arizona. Ed is also survived by nieces Lani Morales of Electric City, Washington, 
Nani Olquin (Mike) of Castroville, California. Kaui Thomas of Honolulu, Hawaii. Great Nieces, Mikaela, Myleene and 
Mailani Olquin and Kaiya Thomas. Memorial Services will be held on Sat, September 12 at 10:00am located at

LEW, ALFRED K.F., D.C., 82, died on September 8th at his home in Honolulu. He is survived by his ex-wife Evelyn Chong 
Lew, his daughter Dr. Susan Wynne Piters (husband Dr. Ken Piters) of California, his beloved grand- daughter Noelani 
Piters of California, brother Edwin Lew of Honolulu, sister Agnes Kuboi of California, and many nieces, nephews, and 
ohana who were very close to his heart. Al was one of 8 children, all of whom were born and raised in Honolulu. He 
was a U.S. Army veteran who served during the Korean War. He went on to attend Lincoln Chiropractic College in 
Indianapolis, Indiana. After graduation, he was a clinical instructor at Lincoln, and opened a private chiropractic 
practice in Indianapolis. He returned to Honolulu in early 1960, at which time he opened his chiropractic office. After 
his family, Al's biggest love was for plants-fruit trees, heliconia, hisbiscus-the botanical world was his to explore. He 
created his own heaven at his farm in Maunawili and friends and family spent many wonderful days enjoying the 
results of his labors of love. Graveside services will be at Mililani Memorial Park, Mililani, on Saturday, October 17th at

of Roosevelt High School. She had also resided on Maui from 2003 to 2012, prior to moving to Houston. Gerry 
operated a home-based childcare service for over 40 years on Oahu and on Maui. She is survived by her daughter Lori 
Ann Fernandez of Napili, Maui her son Nune Patrick Fernandez, Jr. and son-in-law Jason Alan Sechrest of Houston, 
Texas and her grandson, Wyatt Musashi Maui Bartlett of Honolulu, Oahu. Services will be on Monday, September 28, 
2015 at Borthwick Mortuary Makai Chapel, 1330 Maunakea Street, Honolulu, HI 96817 with the visitation beginning at 
11:30 a.m. and services beginning at 12:30. Interment will follow at 2:00pm at Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery in
