Howard Clifford "Cliff" Coleman was not a religious man, but he valued the preciousness of life and strived to make the 
most of it. When he died peacefully at his home in Honolulu on Sept. 23, 2017, at age 92, he had, indeed, made the 
most of it, leaving behind a rich legacy that will long be cherished by family, friends and the community. He was a 
loving husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather (as of the day before he died), insurance executive, stage 
and television actor, advertising model, radio personality, classical music expert, U.S. Air Force officer (Lt. Col., ret.), 
world traveler, influential political activist and more. Born July 19, 1925, in New Haven, Conn., to Howard, a 
professional musician, and Edrie, a bank teller, Cliff was an only child who excelled academically and was admitted to 
Yale University when he was just 16. After World War II started, Cliff left Yale to join the U.S. Army Air Corps. He 
trained as a navigator and bombardier, but the war ended before he could be sent to combat. Post-war service took 
him with occupation forces to Manila, then Tokyo, where he met his first wife, Jean, with whom he had four children. 
Cliff stayed in Tokyo after leaving active military duty in 1948, becoming the civilian manager of an Army officers club. 
Next he represented a food and liquor broker in Okinawa, where he founded and became the first president of the 
American Chamber of Commerce in Okinawa. Subsequent opportunities lured him back to Connecticut, then to Hawaii, 
in 1957, where he eventually became a life insurance salesman, as well as a classical music radio host, a music 
columnist for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and a leader in conservative politics, with groups such as the Hawaii 
Foundation for American Freedoms (Imua), the Republican Party of Hawaii, and Young Americans for Freedom. When 
he left Hawaii in 1966 to help start an insurance company in England, the Honolulu Advertiser compared him to the 
popular national conservative figure William F. Buckley ("Our Buckley to Britain"), editorializing, "We don't agree with 
what he says but there has been nobody around who says it better." After England, Cliff's insurance work took him to 
Florida, Georgia, and finally back to England, where he met Marysia, whom he married in 1973 in Florida. In 1974, Cliff 
returned to Hawaii, with Marysia, where he eventually closed out his successful life insurance career. Jean and Marysia 
met in Hawaii and became good friends, enjoying the bond they shared of knowing and loving Cliff. Cliff, meanwhile, 
resumed his classical music shows on various radio stations, among them Hawaii Public Radio, of which he was a 
founding director; wrote a music column for the Honolulu Advertiser; and did public relations work for the Honolulu 
Symphony. He also was a TV and print advertising model, landed speaking roles in TV shows such as "Hawaii Five-0" 
and "Magnum, P.I.," and continued to enjoy his wonderful life with Marysia, entertaining family and friends at home, 
listening to music and watching videos in his music room, traveling, and just experiencing their little slice of paradise in 
Hawaii. Cliff spent his "blink in time" well. Besides his beloved Marysia, Cliff is survived by his children Mark, Lori, Paul 
and Kevin; stepsons Jack and Peter; hanai daughter Juliet Makaila Wilkinson; grandchildren Jeremy (Kekela), Mele, 
Alisha, Amber and Kawika; step-grandson Jeremy; great- grandson Maikah; and three cousins. Cliff's life will be 
celebrated Dec. 9, 11 a.m., at Diamond Head Mortuary chapel.

December 9, 1955 - November 4, 2017 Bernard was the first and only son born to Lillian and Bernard Freitas. He 
passed away on November 4, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Growing up in Hawaii he liked to tinker with mini-bikes, 
motorcycles and would go diving as a young man. He was an alumnae of Damien Memorial High School class of 1973. 
He played football and entered track and field events. He excelled in shotput and discus where he placed first and 
second in these fields for the duration of his high school years. He won the High School State Championships in 1973 
breaking previously held records, an achievement which earned him a spot at the 1973 National AAU Junior Olympic 
Championships. His love for his sport led him to numerous coaching positions at his alma mater, Waianae High School 
and finally at Green Valley High School in Las Vegas. After high school, he attended the University of Hawaii and 
worked many years as a bouncer at Infinity Night Club in Waikiki. He was a self-taught ukulele player. Even away from 
home, Hawaiian music remained a constant companion in his life. It was through Hawaiian music that he met Charlie 
Pride, they were inseparable and married in 1989. They eventually moved to Las Vegas and made it their home. Charlie 
passed away in 2013. Bernard is survived by his 2 sisters, Bernadette Keliiaa and Antoinette Freitas; one niece and a 
nephew (passed in 2015) and 2 grand nephews. The Freitas family extends their warm aloha and mahalo to all friends 
and family who shared in Bernard and Charlie's life. Any monetary gifts collected in his memory will be donated to the 
Green Valley High School, Track and Field team.

survived by her sons Edward Kawanananakoa Jr., David Kawananakoa, his wife, Maria Kawananakoa and her grandson 
Erik Linstrom. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Regina Kawananakoa and her parents, Clarence Whitaker & 
Mary Lillian De Clark. Lila enjoyed many things, but traveling the world brought her joy throughout her life. She had a 
passion for helping people in need and rescuing animals. She recently set up a Foundation that will continue to carry on 
that passion of hers. Funeral services will be performed at the Oahu Cemetery on Monday, Nov 13th at 10 am. 
Visitation will commence at 9:30 am and the ceremony will be at 10 am followed by the burial and refreshments.

Reiko Okano, 94, of Honolulu, passed away peacefully at home on Nov 5, 2017, surrounded by her loving family. 
Perhaps the many tragedies in Reiko's youth made her strong. Born and raised in Tokyo, her mother died when she 
was 9; at 13, her father suffered a stroke; at 17, Reiko's only sister fell ill and passed away, then her father died. At 18, 
a clerical job would afford her a modest apartment, but when WW2 broke out, fire bombs fell on Tokyo destroying her 
apartment and place of work. She was 22. The war ended and Americans occupied Japan. Reiko fell in love with Teiji 
Frank Okano, a handsome American soldier from Seattle. However, Americans were forbidden to marry Japanese 
citizens. Teiji had filed a marriage request but after 2 yrs of romance, was transferred back to the US and eventually 
honorably discharged. Reiko waited while Teiji reenlisted, in a continued effort to reunite in Japan. Instead, he was 
deployed for the Korean War. Marriage was now possible, but being in Korea, he asked his brother, George, based in 
Tokyo, to stand in for him and married Reiko by proxy. 2 yrs passed before they were reunited but in the end, they 
were happily married for over 70 yrs. Life in Japan was good with 3 children. They enjoyed a vibrant social life, drinking, 
dancing, and bowling. From flower arranging to classical Japanese dance, Reiko thrived. She invested in stocks and real 
estate, and even opened a cafe, while Teiji worked for the Army/Air Force Exchange. In 1967, the US started closing 
military bases and Teiji was transferred to New Jersey, then, Louisiana. There were "Whites Only" signs and no Asians 
in sight, and Reiko didn't speak a word of english or drive. After 2 yrs, the next transfer to Hawaii was perfect, halfway 
between Tokyo and Seattle. Golfing together until 82 and playing poker weekly till 89, her annual trips to Las Vegas 
with Teiji and Cathy ended at 90 when she also quit smoking as a pact with her granddaughter. Reiko was also an avid 
reader and loved gardening. She helped raise 3 granddaughters and cooked daily, often for a family of 10, with 
children, grandchildren, and their partners. Everyone loved her tonkatsu, sukiyaki, okonomiyaki, and other specialties. 
She complained about all the cooking and cleaning but it never stopped her from preparing the next delicious meal or 
keeping an impeccably clean home. Thank you Mom for nourishing all of us and for being such a pillar of strength 
throughout our lives. We will miss you and will take care of Dad till he joins you. Reiko is survived by her husband, Teiji; 
children, Patrick (wife, Taehee), Catherine, and Joyce; granddaughters, Mariko, Remy, and Kenna Reed; and great 
granddaughters, Riley, Aya and Hilina'i.

November 8, 1939 - November 11, 2017 Ray Caspillo, 78, of Honolulu passed away peacefully with his family by his 
side, on November 11, 2017, at St. Francis Hospice Nuuanu. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, 
uncle and friend. Ray grew up in Kapaa Kauai, and graduated Kapaa High School in 1958 best known for his "hook 
shots" as the Captain of the Varsity basketball team. When around friends and family he was known as "PAPA, HONEY, 
UNCLE RAY, and the SILVER FOX for his beautiful hair." Ray was a stoic yet silent man whose presence was felt in a 
room, but when he did speak he was sure to make you laugh even through his silly jokes. His passions in life were 
caring for his roosters, maintaining and restoring cars, and his green thumb favoring hybrid orchids and anthuriums. 
Ray is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carol Hosino; Children Daphne (Dennis) Turner; Carrae'; Joslyne (Chanell); Devin 
(Rema); Jon Paul (Kira) Keb. Sisters; Florence (Frank) Quenones, Janet (Tino) Bruno, Albert (Junita) Caspillo, Felisa (Joe) 
Engbino, Priscilla (William) Phal. Ray is predeceased by parents; Elisia and Dominado Caspillo; Brothers; William and 
Fredrick Caspillo. His children and his grand- children are the lights of his legacy; they will live on in his beautiful spirit! 
HE WILL BE GREATLY MISSED!!! Services: December 9, 2017 at Our Lady of the Mount Church, Monte Street. Visitation:

known for her ono luau stew, beef and curry stew, sweetsour spareribs, etc.. She also worked in the kitchen of Seaview 
Inn. She was a lifelong learner and strong supporter of education. Late in life, she went back to school and enrolled in 
the Women's program at LCC. She loved her pets, reading, traveling, meeting new people, gardening, sewing and 
cooking. She is survived by daughter Ellen T. Nemoto, son Edwin A. Ebisui, Jr., daughter Lorelei M. Campbell, 11 
grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 
12, 2018 at Mililani Memorial Park in the Mauka Chapel. Visitation at 9:30 a.m.; Service at 10:30 with a short burial 
service and lunch following.

Of Wailua Houselots, Kauai, passed away Saturday, November 11, 2017, at the age of 103 years old. She was the oldest 
of 11 children. She attended Eleele Elementary School and was owner of Ma's Family Restaurant, with her husband 
Masao Honjo, for over 40 years before closing her business January of 2007 at the age of 92 years old. Since then, her 
daughter Amy has been her caregiver. She was predeceased by her father Kiyoshi Mori and mother Hazue Kawaguchi 
Mori and husband of 36 years, Masao Honjo. Grandma Honjo or just "Ma" as she liked to be called by her family and 
customers, is survived by 2 brothers and 3 sisters. She raised 3 children, Amy (Sueharu-deceased) Umakoshi, Herbert 
(Fay-deceased) Honjo and Harriet (Tsutao) Morioka. She has 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 1 great great-
grandson. Derek (Rebekah) Umakoshi, sons, Alex and Ian. Wesley (Sandra) Umakoshi and daughter Kristin. Terry (Kent) 
Ogomori and sons, Kelsey and Korey. Alan (Shanna) Umakoshi and daughter, Alanna. Mike (Sheri) Umakoshi and their 
daughters Rylee, Lara and Sachi. Tammie (Russell) Uyeda and their daughters, Courtney, Lyndsey and Sydney, Mitzi 
(Wade) Yamamoto and their daughters Tobi Sibolboro and Tirah Yamamoto, Paige (Cleve) Javier and their children 
Drake and Grace, Naomi (Darren) Wakano and their children Dylan and Lacey, Mae (Darin) Asato and their children 
Brandon and Kaitlyn, and Danny (Julie) Morioka and their daughters Kylie and Sarah. She is also survived by her great 
great-grandson, Reegan Sibolboro. The family would like to thank the staff and management of Hale Kupuna Heritage 
Home and especially Dr. Liliane Kheng who was Ma's physician at Kuhio Medical Center and the staff of Kuhio Medical 
Center and Dr. Yee of Honolulu for the short time Ma was at Hale Kupuna. Ma died of natural causes and is beginning 
her new "GYO" in the spiritual world. We love you always. Prayer services will be held at Tensho-Kotai-Jingu Kyo on 
November 18, 2017 at 1 p.m. Family requests no flowers or monetary gifts. Kauai Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home

February 7th, 1933 at Queens Hospital in Honolulu, Oahu; she was the last surviving child of the late William Sylvester 
and Harriet (Hattie) Leialoha Kaleimamahu Smith of Kalamaula. Affectionately known by family and friends as "Sister", 
she retired from the State of Hawaii Department of Health, Waimanu Training School and Hospital as a food service 
worker on February 15th, 1988. She was a treasured mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunty, cousin, friend 
and confidant. She is survived by her sons Francis (Kristen) Chock of Minnesota, Nathan (Mina) Chock of South 
Carolina, Rudy McGwin of Virginia, Steve (Gay) McGwin of Pennsylvania, and her daughter Laurie (Kaleo) Bishaw of 
Hoolehua, Molokai. She is also survived by step- children Steve McGwin of Michigan, Michael (Susan) McGwin of Texas 
and Michelle (Lew) McGwin Seebinger of New Mexico. She was also predeceased by her two sons, Gary and Randy 
Chock and their father, Francis Chock; and stepdaughter Gladys "Happy" Hollman and her father, Donald Hugh 
McGwin. Gwendolyn's legacy lives on with 22 beautiful grandchildren, 19 great-grand- children and many nieces and 
nephews. Services will be held at 9:30am on Saturday, January 13th, 2018, at Ka Hale Laa O Ierusalema Hou Church, 
Kalamaula, Molokai, followed by ashes to sea service off Kapuaiwa Grove, Kalamaula. No flowers, aloha attire.

Benjamin Franklin Dillingham Ill was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on May 23, 1945, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin F. 
Dillingham II. A fifth generation descendent of New England missionaries to the Hawaiian Islands, he attended Punahou 
School in Honolulu, and later St. Mark's School in Southborough, Massachusetts. He holds the distinction of being the 
first sports manager ever named to the St. Mark's School Athletic Hall of Fame. Ben attended Harvard College, where 
he majored in Economics and managed teams in football, hockey and lacrosse, graduating Cum Laude in 1967. He 
earned six letters in athletics and was Vice President of the A. D. Club. Ben then pursued an MBA at the Harvard 
Business School. With his MBA in hand, Ben became a commissioned officer in the United States Marine Corps. He 
received the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" for his service in Vietnam. Additionally, Ben was awarded the Army 
Commendation Medal for his work on the XM-1 Main Battle Tank. After serving eight years, and with the rank of 
Captain, he returned to civilian life in San Diego. After several years at General Dynamics, Ben became the Chief 
Financial Officer for the San Diego Metropolitan Transit Development Board. Under his stewardship, the first light-rail 
transit system was established in San Diego. In 1986, Ben became Chief of Staff to San Diego Mayor Maureen 
O'Connor, and after she left office, continued to manage her affairs. Ben shared his life with three life partners - first, 
Dannis Grady Whorton, then Fredrick Stann Libby, and finally,Johnny Richard Beck. Each lost his battle with AIDS. 
Throughout his life and through these relationships, Ben was an influential community leader, and a strong advocate of 
Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) rights. Ben served with distinction on many charitable Boards of 
Directors over the years, including the San Diego AIDS Project, AIDS Foundation San Diego, San Diego Human Dignity 
Foundation, and Episcopal Community Services. Ben was also a member of the San Diego County Veterans Advisory 
Council and Chair of the San Diego County Treasury Oversight Committee. Ben was repeatedly recognized for 
outstanding community service. He was the San Diego LGBT Pride Grand Marshall and Man of the Year. He also 
received the Harvey Milk Memorial Award, the Human Rights Award, the Crystal Torch Award from the Human Rights 
Campaign, the Episcopal Community Services Award for Social Justice, and the Humanitarian Award from the City of 
San Diego Human Relations Committee. As a measure of the high esteem in which he was held within the community, 
the LGBT Veterans Wall of in the San Diego LGBT Community Center was co-named for him. There is today a Benjamin 
F. Dillingham Ill LGBT Leadership Award and the Ben F. Dillingham Community Fund. Ben passed away at home from 
pancreatic cancer on November 16, 2017. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Andrews Dillingham, his sister Mrs. Hugh 
Watts (Ceseli) Foster, his brother Henry Gaylord Dillingham II and his sister Mrs. Stuart Harold (Lorie) Rosenwald, 
treasured in-laws, delightful nieces and nephews and their offspring, and many good friends and colleagues. Ben was 
noted for his iron integrity, generosity of spirit, and dedication to the city of San Diego and the LGBT community. His 
loss will be felt by many, and he will be remembered for having lived a varied, accomplished, and committed life.

were inseparable until July 13, 2006 when Molly passed away after 66 years of marriage. They shared their love of life 
with everyone they met. Robert and Molly did everything together (golfing, bowling, playing cards, traveling...) Robert 
was a devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, and Uncle. He was loved by everyone who knew him. Robert 
passed away peacefully at home with family at his side on November 16, 2017. He is survived by his three children, 
Robert Jr. (Pearl), Charles (Mabel), Jewel Tedrick (John); Grandchildren, David Tedrick (Kathy), Steven Lee (Emi), and 
Liana Lee; Great Grandchildren, Tristan and Piper Lee, as well as his sister Mary Jane Lee, his brothers Donald Lee 
(Elaine) and John Lee and many nephews and nieces. Robert lived a full and happy life and always brought laughter and 
love to everyone. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends and remain in our hearts and thoughts forever. At

Bobby Rego, 93, passed away November 16, 2017 in Honolulu. He was the last surviving child of August Martin Rego 
and Emilia Fernandes Rego, and a World War II survivor, serving in both the Army and the Navy. He was a fun-loving 
man who enjoyed people; Vegas was his "Heaven on Earth". He married Emma Kealoha in 1948. She referred to him as 
"The Traveling Salesman" as he was away so much because of his work. Emma passed away in 2007. Bobby is also 
predeceased by his parents, siblings and stepsons. Bobby was a proud member of the International Association of 
Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers, Local 625, and his work took him to the Pacific Rim as 
well as to Italy. He was involved in many amazing projects, and worked on many Henry Kaiser projects, being one of 38 
men who built the Kaiser Dome in 36 hours. He also helped to build La Ronde, the first revolving restaurant in Hawaii. 
He is survived by a stepson, Robert Medeiros, the Medeiros grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-
grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 9:00-10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 13, 2017, 
at Diamond Head Mortuary. Prayer service will begin at 10:00 a.m. with burial to follow at Diamond Head Memorial 
Park at 12:30 p.m. Aloha attire. Arrangements Provided By: Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary

will always be our loving wife, mother, tutu, sister, and friend. Her nurturing spirit will continue to inspire us, as she 
gave love and shelter with open arms. Lizzy is survived by her husband, George, of 51 years; sons Keoki and Kalani; 
daughter, Noelani; grandchildren, Kekoa, Kainoa, Kaimana, Ku'ualoha, Lilianna, and Anuhea; Hanai children, Koa Pedro 
and JoAnne Lindbald; sisters, Jolinda Higuchi and Reney Ching; many nieces and nephews, whom she truly loved; and,
