MARY ANN OASAY HASHIMOTO Mary Ann Oasay Hashimoto passed away on September 11, 2017. Born in Ewa, Hawaii, 
she was a retired postal employee from Ewa Beach and Barber's Point Post Office. Hired in 1965, she was a "postal 
pioneer" (published in Star Bulletin, February 3, 2001) as she was the first female letter carrier in Hawaii. She loved her 
job and especially enjoyed watching the children on her route growing up. Her children also loved her job as she would 
bring home so many Christmas presents from her customers who clearly loved her. Her loving husband of 62 years, 
Willard A. Hashimoto, Sr., passed away on September 27, 2016. She was the eldest of 8 children born to Sabas and 
Maria Oasay. She is survived by sister, Angeline Leynes, brothers Rolando, Manuel, Larry and Danny, predeceased by 
brothers Franklin and Benjamin. Survived by sons Willard Jr., Robin (Jodi), Glenn (Jaime), and Keo (Rona); daughters Jan 
Cahela, Yvonne Salva (Garrick Gedarro), Lili-Ann Say (Wendell) and Michelle Sakurada (Mike); 21 grand- children and 10 
great-grand- children. Celebration for Mary Ann and Willard "Yagi" will be held on Monday, October 9, 2017 at Mililani 
Mauka Chapel. Visitation at 5:00, services commencing at 6:30.

Dai Doo Society where he did ballroom dancing, playing tin gau(a dominoes game) and bingo. He is survived by his 
wife, Annie Wong Ching of 69 years; children Carolyn (Clayton) Chan, Clyde (Dee) Ching, and Claudette (Alan) 
Nishigaya; grandchildren Christopher Chan, Megan Ching (Daniel Young), Chelsea Chan, Jenny Ching, Adam Nishigaya, 
Joshua Nishigaya, and Christine Nishigaya. A memorial service will be held on Oct. 2, 2017 at 9am at Diamond Head

Japan to Utaro and Tamae Takeda. After marrying her Marine Corps husband Richard in Tokyo in January 1959 they 
were transferred to Oahu eight months later. After a 4-year tour of duty in Hawaii, they were assigned to several other 
out-of-state military locations, before returning to Oahu in 1970 where her husband eventually retired from the 
Marine Corps, and she worked at the Mess Halls at Barbers Point and West Loch over the next 25 years. She enjoyed 
dining out at her number one restaurant (Gyotaku), and watching her Japanese TV shows. She especially loved 
watching the Sumo Tournaments where she would be joined in her special TV room by members of her family to help 
her cheer for her Sumo favorites. She is survived by her husband Richard, her daughters Katharine and Mary, her sons 
Johnnie (Sherry), Jimmie (Kristy), and Richard; her grandchildren Crystal, Jarred, Kelsey, Stormy, Kawehi, Kylie, Johnnie, 
and Tommy; and her great grandchildren Tyler, Nathan, Akahana, and Kalama. Tatsue's family meant everything to her, 
and she was the best wife, mother, and grandmother anyone could ever ask for. She was loved and respected by so 
many, and she will be sorely missed by all. She will forever live on in our hearts and prayers. Soka Gakkai Buddhist 
services and inurnment were held at Mililani Mauka Cemetery. Arrangements Provided By: Nuuanu Memorial Park &

Benjamin Buckles Cassiday, Jr., 95, passed away peacefully at his home in Niu Valley on Sept. 21, 2017. Ben was born in 
Honolulu on July 25, 1922, the son of Col. Benjamin Buckles Cassiday and Harriet Lucas Cassiday. Ben received his early 
schooling at Punahou and graduated from Culver Military Academy, Ind. in 1940 as Regimental Commander. He went 
on to the West Point, graduating in 1943, where he earned his pilot wings and commission as a 2nd lieutenant. Ben and 
his former wife, Barbara Dennison from Honolulu married in 1949, and had 3 beautiful children. Ben went on to have 
an honored military career in the United States Air Force. He was a command pilot with more than 4,500 flying hours, 
including more than 290 combat hours. Highlights of his career included being a World War II fighter pilot in France and 
Italy, an exchange pilot with the US Navy in 1950, the 1st Commander of Cadets at the US Air Force Academy in 1955, 
and Commandant of Air Force ROTC in 1972. His decorations and awards included the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, 
Distinguished Flying Cross, Soldier's Medal, Air Medal, 2 Navy Gold Stars, Presidential Unit Citation Medal, Navy Unit 
Commendation Ribbon, Navy Outstanding Service Medal, and the British Distinguished Flying Cross. He retired as a 
Brigadier General in November 1972. Upon retirement, he returned to his beloved Hawaiian Islands. In 1983, Ben 
married Suzanne Baldwin from Honolulu. They traveled the world and doted on their families. Suzie died peacefully on 
March 2002. Ben was past chairman of the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation, past president of the Outrigger 
Canoe Club, past board member of the Pacific Air Museum, past trustee of the Falcon Foundation, honorary member 
of the American Fighter Aces Assoc., past member of the Rod & Gun Club and an active member of the Quiet Birdmen. 
Ben was not only known for his athleticism in the air as a fighter pilot, but also on the ground. He competed in the 
1948 Olympic trials in the 400 meter hurdles, ran in the Penn Relays, and was an avid skier. Most important to Ben 
were his friends and family. He will be remembered for being a loyal, caring and generous friend. Ben was a true 
gentleman. He was the best father and grandfather any child could ask for. He spent all holidays, birthdays, and free 
time traveling the country to be with his family. Whether it was cheering for his kids and grandkids on the field, skiing 
with them or teaching them their ABC's, Ben was always there. They were all blessed to have had Ben in their lives, 
there are no words that can do him justice. Ben is survived by his daughter Carol Orr of Washington, DC, her husband 
Steve, his grandchildren, Stephen Jr., Casey and CJ, his great grandchildren, Benjamin and Grace, his step-daughters 
Christy Foytich and her husband Dick, Nancy Arnott and her husband Tom and Gail Alger and her husband Doug, his 
step- grandchildren Heather, Lauren, Megan, Alicia, Parker, Lani and Duncan, his 5 great step-grandchildren, Malia, 
Kalia, Harper, Kaitlyn and Eli, his brother Paul, his nephew, nieces and cousin, his former wife Barbara, and many, many 
friends including Harriet Wedeman. Waiting for him in heaven and at the "pool" in Niu are his beloved sons Jimmy and 
Ben, III - "Trip", and his wife Suzie. A service will be held on Friday, September 29, 1:30pm at the family home, 5621 
Kalanianaole Highway. Please park across the street on W. Halemaumau Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be

March 16, 1918 - October 3, 2017 Louise Herron Ripple, known to her friends as 'Jimmie', passed away peacefully at 
Arcadia Retirement Residence in Honolulu on October 3. She was 99. Jimmie was born to loving parents Charles 
Douglas and Louise Milligan Herron, in Richmond, VA. She grew up as an Army 'brat' and traveled extensively with her 
parents and brother, Bill, as her father, who retired as a three-star general, was stationed at many Army posts around 
the world. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College with degrees in music and German. While visiting her parents at Ft. 
Shafter in Honolulu in 1939 she met Richard ('Rip') W. Ripple, also a West Point graduate and career Army officer. They 
were married in 1941 and embarked on an adventurous life together that took them to post-war Germany and Izmir, 
Turkey, as well as many stateside tours of duty. Jimmie was a quintessential Army wife, just as her mother had been. 
Rip's last posting was in Honolulu, where he and Jimmie retired in 1966 and enjoyed a full life of friends, music, paddle 
tennis, bridge, worldwide travel, golf, deep sea diving (Jimmie), and fishing (Rip). Jimmie's natural curiosity and 
independent nature led her to pursue her many interests throughout her life. She was an accomplished equestrian as a 
teenager and won many hunter/jumper competitions; in keeping with her avid interest in nature and preservation, she 
was a member of the Outdoor Circle; as a violinist and violist, she made friends and organized chamber music groups 
wherever she lived, including in Honolulu, where she was active in the Morning Music Club and played in the Honolulu 
Symphony. At age 65, she fibbed about her age so she could take scuba diving lessons. She dove around the world, 
taking photos of undersea life and delighting in the creatures she encountered. She was a docent at the Honolulu 
Aquarium and she regularly swam out to the windsock in the channel at the Outrigger Canoe Club. Rip passed away 
shortly after they moved to Arcadia in 1998. Jimmie stayed active well into her 90's, swimming at the Outrigger, 
playing chamber music and bridge, and supporting music and the arts. Her many friends at Arcadia, some of whom she 
had known since 1963, were dear to her. She was an inspiration to all who knew her, and her gracious nature and 
gentle warmth will be remembered always. She is survived by her four children, Richard Ripple and his wife Fiona 
(Nipomo, CA), Louise Ripple Yuhas (Smith Valley, NV), Daphne Ripple Araujo and her husband Bart (Napa, CA), and 
Carol Ripple and her husband David Bersoff (New York, NY); three grandchildren, Jessie Doernberger (Baltimore, MD), 
Jeremy Doernberger (Washington, DC), and Camille Ripple (Boca Raton, FL); granddaughter Olivia Ripple predeceased 
her grandmother in 2015. Jimmie will be missed by her three step-grandchildren, Jaime Araujo Bezian (Piedmont, CA), 
Gregory Araujo (Boca Raton, FL), and Chris Araujo (Portland, OR). Friends are welcome to a celebration of her life at 
Arcadia, 1434 Punahou Street, Honolulu, at 2:00pm on Wednesday, October 18th. In lieu of flowers the family requests 
donations to the Morning Music Club of Honolulu. Please contact Susan Spangler at (808) 734-2925 for further

everything she did, she did for her family, she was a loving & loyal friend that always had a smile on her face. She was 
hilarious, always making those around her laugh. Tiare was also a gifted writer, successfully publishing two books. 
Beautiful on the inside & out, She will be sorely missed by anyone that ever had the privilege of knowing her. She is 
survived by Muriel Beaver Marques (Mother - Deceased), John B. Marques (Father), Christian Matimo Tuairau 
(Brother), Manute'a Tuairau (Brother). A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, October 20th, 2017 from 9-12 @

JUDITH SOI LAN AU BYERS, JUDY Judith Soi Lan Au Byers returned to her Heavenly home on October 18 after a long 
courageous battle with cancer. She was 78. Judy was born on November 3, 1938 to Thomas Ha'aheo Au and Elizabeth 
Rahab Kekauoha Au. She was a graduate of Kahuku High School and Church College of Hawaii. She was a retired 
employee of Brigham Young University Hawaii where she worked as a Secretary for many years. She was a score 
keeper for the BYU Hawaii Basketball team for over 40 years. Judy also served her country in the United States Navy. 
She is survived by her Daughter Leslee Ann King (Peter), 4 Grandchildren - Alexia, Zachary, Lacey Makenna and Jake. 
Brother Larry Au Sr. (Irene), Sisters Ruby Ann Au and Evelyn Perry (Howard). Her infectious smile, kind heart and giving 
spirit will be missed by those who knew and loved her. Services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day 
Saints, Laie 1st Ward Chapel on Friday, November 3, 2017. Public viewing will begin at 9am followed by services 
beginning at 11am. Burial to follow at the Laie Cemetery. Much Mahalo to the many Kaiser Doctors and Nurses and

Age 82, of St. Augustine, Florida and Sugar Mountain, passed away Wednesday evening, October 18, 2017, at Johnson 
City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee. He is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Chafin of Burbank California 
and nephews Charles and Stewart Chafin. Born in Marianna Florida on November 4, 1934 and moved to Tallahassee a 
few weeks there after. He graduated from Leon high school and attended FSU for a short while before enlisting in the 
US Marine Corp in 1953. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant three years later. He attended Woodberry college 
in Southern California graduating cum laude as a California CPA. He then went to work for Arthur Andersen in LA 
specializing in Taxes. In 1963 relocated to Hawaii to join the Dillingham corporation a major NYSE public company with 
international operations. He retired as group V.P. In 1982 and relocated to Florida. He has served on several corporate 
and civic Board of Directors. No public service will be held any donations should be made to a charity of your choice.

husband, Jose "Joe" Cua. They had four children: Jennifer, Joseph, Jocelyn and Jacquelyn, five grandchildren and four 
great grandchildren. She is survived by one brother, Anthony Hatico. Brothers, George, Christopher, Jose, and Don 
Hatico, and her sister, Dolores Albeso, have all gone before her. A celebration of Josephine's life will be held on

grandmother Pacita C. Saludes; grandfather Rev. Jaime F. Galvez, Sr; and numerous aunties, uncles and cousins. She 
attended Kalei'opu'u Elementary, Waipahu Intermediate, and her high school years at University Laboratory School, a 
2004 graduate. She left home at age 18 to pursue her Bachelor Degree of Social Work at Seattle University in the state 
of Washington. This place is where she met the love of her life and soulmate. When she came home during her 
summer vacations, she was always drawn to work with special needs children at August Ahrens Elementary School. 
After graduation at Seattle University, she was employed by Family Focus in Seattle which contracted her as Behavioral 
Specialist to help with students with special needs at North Bend Elementary School in the suburbs of Seattle. Clarice 
also worked as Information Technologist at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. In the summer of 2013, she came 
home to Hawaii to pursue her desire to work with children with severe disabilities. She received her Post Baccalaureate 
Certificate in Special Education at UH Manoa in May 2015. Clarice taught Special Education at Ewa Elementary School 
for 3 years. She lived her 31 years of life to its fullest, loving God, family time, traveling, and her adventures with food 
and wine. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2017 at the Honolulu First Church of the 
Nazarene, 408 N Judd St. Visitation: 9:00am; Service: 10:00 am; Lunch to follow. Burial at 1:30pm at Valley of the 
Temples Memorial Park.

He was the second oldest and only son of four children born to Emma (McClellan) and Lewis Hubbard. He attended 
Kamehameha Schools and graduated in 1956. He then attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout, where he graduated 
with a bachelors and masters degree in industrial arts education. He worked as an industrial arts and technology 
teacher and bus driver, with 40 years of service to Kamehameha Schools. He loved his job and enjoyed teaching and 
mentoring his Hawaiian students. Louie met and married his wife, Barbara (Kobus) in 1969. They made their home in 
Pupukea, where they raised their two daughters, Lori and Lani. He was very active in the lives of his four grandchildren. 
He is predeceased by his loving wife, Barbara Ann (Kobus) Hubbard. Survived by daughters, Lori M. (Siaosi) Saelua, Lani 
K. Hubbard & Scott Humber; sister, Lela Hubbard; grandchildren, Ka'ena Humber, Kaleo Humber, Jodi Saelua, Josh 
Saelua. Celebration for Louie will be held on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at Mililani Memorial Park Mauka Chapel.

Mrs. Janie Marie Chambrella, 78, passed away in her home in Kapolei on October 27th. The funeral will take place on 
November 30th. Services will begin at 9:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church located at 91-1004 North Road, 
Ewa Beach. A requiem mass will be celebrated immediately after the viewing and lunch will follow in the church hall. 
The burial will take place at the Hawaii State Veterans Cemetery in Kaneohe at 1:00 p.m. Mrs. Chambrella was born in 
Upper Pa'ia on the island of Maui. Her husband, Michael G. Chambrella passed in 1997. She is survived by her two sons 
Wayne and Michael, her daughter-in-law, Mary and her two grandsons Makoa and Keanu. She will be dearly missed.

81, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2017 in Littleton, Colorado after a brief but valiant fight against pancreatic 
cancer. Charlie was born in Honolulu to Louise Erdman and Charles Jefferson Henderson on January 25, 1936. His 
school years were spent at Hanahauoli School and then Punahou, graduating as Class President in 1954. A relentless 
competitor, he played football and basketball and ran track in all four years of high school. In 1952, he was named an 
All-Star defensive back by both major newspapers in the Honolulu Interscholastic League (now the ILH) and in 1953 
was an integral part of Punahou's long-elusive football championship quest in that League. In what amounted to the 
title contest in November, he ran 67 yards for a critical touchdown on a strange but effective broken play. "It was," an 
old friend said, "as if he had worked his whole athletic life for that burst and he made the most of it." He loved the 
beach especially for body-surfing and volleyball, but was never a dedicated Waterman as were others within his 
generation and circle of friends. After Punahou, Charlie attended Dartmouth College, where he majored in Botany and 
fell madly in love with skiing. His interest in Botany was a bit surprising to some, but a fascination with agriculture was 
not to those who knew him well. From childhood days watching sugar harvesting at Waialua, spending summers at 
Kahua Ranch on Hawaii Island, through college and summer work, and eventually into the training program of the 
bygone Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association, his career goals were clear. There was subsequent employment at several 
Island sugar plantations and in Puerto Rico. In 1972 he moved to Colorado and acquired the 100 year old Bar U I ranch 
near Steamboat Springs and successfully modernized the business through new agricultural and breeding techniques. 
In 1981 he moved his cattle operation to Castle Rock and subsequently consulted with other ranchers wanting to 
pasture cattle closer to mid-Western feed lots. His own self-description was, "I guess I've always basically been a 
farmer." Politically conservative, but socially liberal, Charlie welcomed the challenge of service in the US Army Reserve 
Special Forces where he earned his Jump Wings as a paratrooper. In later years, his 50s, he tackled another physical 
challenge---long distance endurance bicycle riding. He was a four-time finisher of the Paris-Brest-Paris ride which 
originated in 1891 and the1200K Montreal-Boston-Montreal. With other local cyclists he started the Rocky Mountain 
Cycling Club (RMCC) focused on endurance riding and was a founding member of Randonneurs USA (RUSA). There are 
now more than 10,000 RUSA members and his member number is 5. He continued to ride with RMCC until 2012 and 
continued to organize spring training camps and the club's "Challenge Series" rides until his cancer diagnosis in January, 
2017. Charlie is survived by his wife of 36 years, the former Diana Damon Smart and two sons, Peter (Sally Bearne) of 
Brighton, England and Stephen (Tracy Evans) of Carmel Valley, California and four grand- children-Joe, Alex, Emily and 
Ainsley. He is also survived by brother Harold (Gloria Campbell) and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was pre-
deceased by his first son Charles at age 5 of spinal meningitis in 1966 and his beloved stepdaughter, Stefanie Smart, 
who succumbed to cancer in 2011 at age 45. A Celebration of Life in Honolulu is pending.

Eleanor Mahoney Lyden, died Friday October 27, 2017 at her home in Honolulu, Hawaii surrounded by her loving 
family. Eleanor was born on February 8, 1920 in East Orange, New Jersey and lived many years in Salem, Connecticut 
before moving to Hawaii. She was blessed to have lived 97 years filled with love and achievement, dedicated first and 
always to her family. She was matriarch to a large Irish family of 10 children, 19 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 
and many nieces and nephews who loved her deeply. She was also one of the original founders of the Makakilo Senior 
Citizens Club. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 20th at St. Jude Catholic Church in 
Makakilo, Hawaii.
