93, of Honolulu, passed away on October 4, 2017. Yosi as he was known to his many friends and colleagues was the 
senior archaeologist in the Anthropology Department of the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum. He occupied the 
Museum's Kenneth P. Emory Distinguished Chair in Anthropology since 1989. He began his work in the Pacific in 1954 
as Dr. Emory's assistant and continued his research of Polynesian migrations for more than six decades. He officially 
retired in 2013, but continued to go in to his office at the Museum to work with his loyal team of colleagues, 
volunteers, and part time assistant provided by the Museum until the first part of this year. He spent many years in 
French Polynesia researching the homelands of the prehistoric inhabitants of the Hawaiian Islands. Besides pursuing his 
own research, many important sites and prehistoric complexes were restored and preserved for the benefit of the 
cultural descendants. Probably more widely known there than in Hawaii, the people of Tahiti and Marquesas 
affectionately referred to him as tapone (Japanese) or Taote Sinoto (Dr. Sinoto). He was blessed with a long and fruitful 
life pursuing what he loved and enjoyed since his intermediate school days. Over the years he met and became friends 
with many people, not only in the Pacific, but worldwide. He was fortunate to have many professional colleagues 
throughout his career. He was happy to see his latest book, The Curve of the Hook, written with Mr. Hiroshi Aramata, 
translated and published by the University of Hawaii Press in September of 2016. He is survived by his son Akihiko, 
daughter-in-law, Lucindy, and grandsons Luke Kaneko, Laurent Sinoto (Brandy), and Leigh Sinoto. The Sinoto family 
wishes to acknowledge the following individuals who have continued to provide vital support for his work throughout 
his time at the Museum: Mr. Eric Komori, Ms. Elaine Rogers- Jourdane, Ms. Toni Han, Ms. Shoko Hisayama, Mr. Peter 
Tanaka, Mr. Kei Suzuki, Mr. Art Pascua, Mr. Toru Hayashi, Ms. Sophie Teururai, Ms. Paloma Lapeina, Ms. Dorothy Levi, 
Mr. Umi Kai, and Mr. Masafumi Honda. Also, our aloha to his very dear and oldest friends, Dr. Douglas Yen, Mr. John 
Carroll, Mrs. Patience Bacon, Dr. Hiro Kurashina, Dr. Becky Stephenson, Mr. Moriyuki Kunimoto, his cousin Mr. Takane 
Hara, and all the numerous other friends, colleagues, and relatives who could not be mentioned here for their lifelong 
encouragement. We are grateful for the loving care provided over the last few years by his caregivers, Ms. Temalesi 
Cakacaka, Mr. Tupou Bose, and especially Mrs. Yolanda Arriaga De Villalobos. We also Thank the past and current 
management and staff of the Bishop Museum. A public Memorial Event celebrating Dr. Sinoto's life and achievements 
will be held at the Bishop Museum on Weds., November 15, 2017 from 2-6pm. A short program is scheduled at 4pm. In 
lieu of flowers, contributions are requested for the Museum's Emory-Sinoto Fund to support the continuation of the

Florence Lois Keohokamanu Kong Kee passed away on October 7, 2017, at the age of 55. Flo will be lovingly 
remembered by her parents John and Lei Kong Kee, siblings Mary Kapanui, Theresa (Marshall) Kong Kee Luke, John Jr. 
(deceased), William, Sam (Candy), nephews Kolomona (Summer) Kapanui, Kamuela (Hoku) Kapanui, nieces Faith, Sage, 
grandnephews and grandniece. Growing up in Honolulu, Flo attended St. Patrick School and was a 1980 Punahou 
graduate. For many years she worked in the tourism and service industry sharing Hawaii's culture and Aloha spirit. 
Inspired by the late U.S. Representative Patsy Mink, Flo was dedicated to making a difference in people's lives at the 
policy and government level. Her talent for bringing people together led Flo to work for HSTA, the Democratic Party 
and UPW. At UPW Flo became a strong voice for Hawaii's working class. Her life's work and passion to improve the 
lives of the members and their families reached far across the state and nation. Flo served her faith community as a 
founding member of the St. Augustine Gala Dinner. She helped to raise awareness and funds for the museum honoring 
Hawaii's local Saints Damien and Marianne. Flo's life was full and large just like her love for her ohana, friends and 
Hawaii. She'll be fondly remembered for sharing the Aloha spirit through her heartfelt conversations, ono cooking and 
willingness to kokua. A Celebration of Flo's Life will be held at St. Augustine by-the-sea Catholic Church, 130 Ohua Ave 
in Waikiki on Saturday, November 18, from 9:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. followed by Mass at 12:00 p.m. Carpooling is highly 
recommended. Complimentary valet service will be available on Ohua Street with limited parking spaces. Public 
parking can also be found on nearby streets, the Zoo and Waikiki Shell. Leis and flowers are welcomed. Aloha Attire.

Barbara Ann Moon, age 75, of Honolulu passed away on October 8, 2017. She was born in Joplin, Missouri to Phyllis 
and Ray Heller on December 4, 1941. After receiving a degree in journalism from the University of Missouri, she 
worked at newspapers in Texas and Chicago before moving to Honolulu. Initially working as a civilian with the U.S. 
Navy, she joined the City and County of Honolulu, where she enjoyed a 34-year long career, retiring as a manager with 
the Department of Planning and Permitting (fka DLU). Her sharp intellect and personal and professional integrity were 
the hallmarks of her distinguished career. To those she loved, her caring and loyalty were boundless. Those who knew 
and loved her best also knew that her quiet demeanor belied a dry wit and wicked, sometimes raucous, sense of 
humor. To play poker with her risked being subjected to her victory dance as she merrily took your chips and issued 
orders to deal another hand. To laugh with her was joyous and unforgettable. She was a much beloved mother, 
grandmother, sister and friend who lived and died on her own terms...with courage, compassion, dignity and grace. 
She shall forever be missed. Survivors include son Ryan, daughter-in-law Deanna, grandsons Evan and Nathan, 
daughter Rima, sister Donna Kennedy, brother Duane Kennedy, sister Sissy Kennedy, friend Geri Ung and the Ung

Colonel Justin Guy Ballou, III (Retired), died of cancer on October 13, 2017. Guy was born to Virginia Ballou and CDR. 
Justin Guy Ballou in Providence, RI in 1944. He graduated from North Kingstown High School in 1963. His Bachelor of 
Science in Management was from Embry Riddle University and Master of Science from Kansas State in Computer 
Engineering. He joined the Army in 1967 as a private and 29 years later retired as a Colonel. He served in the 11th 
Armored Cavalry Regiment in Viet Nam as a Scout pilot where he received a Silver Star, 2 DFCs, Purple Heart, Bronze 
Star for Valor, 33 Air Metals 2 for Valor. He commanded 2nd Armored Division's Air Cavalry Troop, the Attack Aviation 
Battalion in the 9th Motorized Division and Combat Aviation Brigade in the 25th Infantry Division. Between aviation 
assignments, Guy worked as a staff officer in computer related areas in Western Command in Hawaii, CINCPAC in 
Hawaii and Commanded the Personnel Information Command for the Army in Washington DC. At retirement in 1996, 
Guy received the Distinguished Service Metal. Guy's passions after retiring from the Army was racing sailboats and oil 
painting. Guy married LTC Valerie C. Vares in 1985 on the beach in Maui. He is survived by wife Valerie, mother 
Virginia, & sisters Chris and Kelle. Guy will be buried with full honors at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.

Survived by husband of 40 years, James Frisbie of Waialua. Son Matthew of Lahaina, Hi. Daughter Elizabeth and 
Grandson Max of Haleiwa, Hi. Sister, Pattie Schofield, Irvine Ca. Brother Billy Greene of Capistrano Beach, Ca. We were 
all so privileged to be in her presence during her final months. Nancy was a most remarkably loving and funny woman. 
Nancy loved to cook, laugh and entertain. As a teacher / counselor, she was a professional. Students loved her, 
gathered about her. She believed, taught and lived the truth; "Those that are the hardest to love, are the ones that 
need love the most." Nancy's greatest joys; her family, children, grandson Max. She will be greatly missed. Nancy's final 
teaching assignment as an anatomy professor at John Burns Medical School recently concluded. Private services by 
family will be spring, 2018.

Mrs. Chiyeko (Ogawa) Hayamoto passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, November 18th, at 97 years of age. 
She was the daugher of Senjiro and Haru Ogawa. Mrs. Hayamoto was born in Honolulu in 1920. She was the widow of 
Hiroshi "Raymond" Hayamoto, who built the house above Kaimuki where she lived until her passing. She devoted her 
professional life to First Hawaiian Bank, and worked at the downtown Honolulu branch until her retirement. She was 
preceded in death by her brothers, Hoichi, Jiro, Seiji and Richard Ogawa. She is survived by her sister, Gladys Shigeko 
Ogawa; her nephews. Michael, Jonathan, Miles, Kenneth, and David Ogawa, and her nieces, Joycelyn (Ogawa) Yee, 
Claire (Ogawa) Kanoya, Valerie (Ogawa) Frazier, and Lynne Ogawa. She was a member of the Jodo Mission, where

BRENDAN KENNEDY KEHOE KAMANI BUCHWACH 12/21/64 - 11/29/17 of Hawaiian/Portuguese heritage, Brendan was 
adopted into the Buck and Peggy Buchwach Ohana through the intercession of Frank Sinatra, and brought home 
Christmas morning to the house in Niu Valley that was purchased in anticipation of his birth. It is the same house he 
and his wife, L Kae Graniel, had recently moved into before his passing. Given the Hawaiian name Ke'ao opua by Mary 
Kawena Pukui. A handsome, highly intelligent, many-gifted person with a great sense of humor and desire to be in 
service of others - he attended Kamehameha, and graduated from Kalani. Brendan also attended Kapiolani Community 
College. He was active, playing soccer with the Hawaii Kai Sharks, Kamehameha, and Kalani. He enjoyed boogie 
boarding at Sandy's, live music, and photography. He was an avid reader and scrabble player. Wherever he worked he 
always quickly rose in position and recognition - named employee of the year for 13 stores in Hawaii/California by Pier 
1 Imports, and most recently promoted to manager of The Honolulu Fitness Center at Fort Street Mall after just 3 
weeks of employment. On December 12, 1992 (Sinatra's birthday) Brendan's first marriage was to April Hom, and they 
had son, Bradd Aaron Ikaika Hom Buchwach in July of 95'. Forever enamored of East Oahu and his numerous "Niu 
Valley Boys", as a young child he admired firemen and they, in turn, came to his rescue (at Station 1) when he suffered 
an aorta tear which led to his passing. On November 11th of this year, after a ten-year courtship, he married L. Kae 
Graniel. She was the love of his life and was a calming influence on him. He was predeceased by his grandmother, 
Bernice Kehoe (who called him "Honey Boy" and was his chief caregiver while his parents worked) also pre-deceasing 
him was his father, Buck Aaron Buchwach, who dubbed him "Handsome Harry". Brendan is survived by his wife, son, 
mother, Peggy Kehoe Buchwach, brothers Brett (Debbie), Brian, Bruce and Barron "Buzz", sisters Barbara "Sande" 
Amesley, Ph.d., Bonnie Swanson MD (David, M.D.), hanai sisters Viviane Mariteragi, Mitara Bougerie and numerous 
nieces and nephews. Ashes will be privately scattered and a Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 
16th at 3:00pm at Calvary Lutheran Church, Aina Haina. Calvary Lutheran Church, Aina Haina, was a good influence in 
Brendan's life and he, in turn, volunteered there with the work of the Angel Network.In lieu of flowers donations may 
be made to Hawaii Community Foundation 827 Fort Street Mall, Honolulu 96813 where an endowment has been set 
up in the name of Brendan Buchwach. Funds will be channeled to Waikiki Health Center.

Passed away on November 29 in Honolulu at the age of 90. "Mert" was Mr. A.L.O.H.A. to the Chillingworth Ohana, 
professional colleagues, and all that met him along the way. He was always smiling, laughing and full of love. Mert was 
the fourth child of Robert and Ethel Chillingworth born on August 1st, 1927 in Honolulu. After attending Roosevelt High 
School, Mert went on to graduate from Duke University in North Carolina. He then headed to Labrador where he was a 
second lieutenant in the transportation corps of the US Army. Mert began his insurance career at Allstate, followed by 
his association with First Insurance Co. of Hawaii. He then formed a partnership with Warren Ackerman, known as 
Ackerman Chillingworth. In 1973 their firm was acquired by Marsh & McLennan where Mert became manager, 
specializing in the bonding of companies until his retirement in 1992. Mert served on the boards of Honolulu Federal 
Savings and Loan, Long and Malone, Honsador, and the Honolulu Board of Underwriters. Sports were Mert's principal 
recreation. He held season tickets to the UH Warrior football team where he was an avid supporter for decades. He 
was a member of the Pacific Club where he held champion titles in paddle tennis. But his first love was golf. As a 
member of Oahu Country Club for over 50 years he organized the first member-Guest tournament and was club 
president in 1997-98. He was most proud of his scorecard and trophy for his hole-in-one in 1982. Mert was preceded in 
death by his first wife Janet, their son Robert and his sister Maris Gray. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Lenore, 
his daughter Susy Ruddle (Francis), grandson William Morgan (Lara), great-grandchildren, Grace and James. He is also 
survived by step daughters Karen and Cindy Knight, step grandsons Rick (Chelsea) and Chuck Roslof, sister, Phyllis 
Garrett, brother Sherwood Chillingworth and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held 
on Friday January 5, 2018 at Atherton Chapel, Central Union Church. 9am visitation followed by 10am service. In lieu of 
flowers donations may be made to the Hawaii Island Humane Society, 74-5225 Queen Kaahumanu Hwy. Kailua-Kona HI

district of Wailuku, under Chief Abraham Iona. During his young years, he was active with the Lanai Gun & Rifle Club, 
Lahaina Methodist Church, bowling leagues & Okinawan Dance Club on Maui. He was also an enthusiastic & committed 
student of the Kaunoa Senior Centers' Monday ukulele class under the late Ruth Latham & present Penny Davis. Even 
though the drive from Kula, where he resided with Natalie was Jong, he hardly missed a class. The family wishes to 
thank his Kula neighbors Donna & Eric, Diane & Allen and the Awais for looking in on Kiichi & Natalie. Also Dr. Joey 
Kohatsu & staff, caregivers Cookie, Mary Lou, Sherry, Jeanette, Jenet & others who provided loving & compassionate

Haleiwa, Hawaii, on May 21, 1927, he was the son of Enichi and Makae Rosalina Kahelahela Fujinaga. Upon graduating 
from Waialua High School he served in the U.S. Army in WWII. He worked most of his life as a carpenter mason for the 
Carpenter's Union in Hawaii until he was 68. He then worked for the USDA at the Honolulu Airport until he was 80. He 
is survived by his wife, Claudia Ruth Pignolet Fujinaga of Somerville; son, David Fujinaga Allen and wife Patricia of Hawi, 
Hawaii; nieces who he raised as his own daughters, Lauretta Sewaki, Annette Lau, and Harolyn Tantog; and many 
nieces and nephews. The service will be held on Jan. 9, 2018 at Queen Lili'uokalani Church in Haleiwa. Visitation at 
9am, Service at 10am, Inurnment at 11:00 am.

WWII Veteran, Loving Husband and Father: Arthur Earl Goldberger, 96, passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2017 
at 6am at Tripler Army Medical Center. He was the most amazing man that ever lived. All of his wishes were granted, 
he passed so peacefully and his work on Earth was complete. He was a great Teacher to all that met him. Born January 
12, 1921 in Pine Bluff Arkansas. Arthur joined the US Army Air Corps in 1949, well before the Air Corps became the Air 
Force. He was a pilot through WW2, the Vietnam War and the Korean Conflict. He blessed this earth with his presence, 
wisdom and love. In Vietnam, in 1967 he met the love of his life, Ngyuen Thi Bach Hoa, now Helenne Goldberger. He 
had 3 children Charles, Gene and Judy. Sadly, both Charles and Gene have passed as well and have met him in Heaven. 
They are together now. He is survived by his wife Helenne and his daughter Judy. His services are as follows: 12/12 
Tuesday, Wake service, Borthwick Mortuary downtown, 6-7pm food and refreshments provided 12/13 Wednesday, 
Memorial service, Tripler Army Medical Center Chapel, 3D, 5-6pm food and refreshments provided 12/14 Thursday,
