husband and loving family. Violet was born in Wahiawa, Hawaii on February 12, 1935, the youngest of 8 children. Her 
parents, Shizuichi and Haruyo Daigo Hiratani, had emigrated from Hiroshima, Japan. Violet attended Leilehua High 
School, University of Hawaii, and Cal State Fullerton. She was a devoted wife, mother, homemaker, and a talented 
seamstress. Violet and Xavier raised three daughters in Whittier, California. Throughout her life she enjoyed sports 
(tennis, 5K & 10K races, including 3 Bay to Breakers) and travelling (to visit family, explore, and enjoy good food). After 
she received a BA from CSU Fullerton she worked on the B-2 Project during her 13 years at Northrop. Her special joy 
was being 'Mum' to grandchildren Cory, Alex, and Lana. Violet is survived by her husband Xavier J. Padilla, Sandy and Ed 
Smith, Lisa Padilla and Greg Hise, Linda and Shaun McCray; and siblings Moriyoshi Hiratani and Ann Goya. Family

BEAMAN, JAMES COMSTOCK, 86, of Honolulu, a retired lawyer, passed away on September 17 in Honolulu. He is 
survived by his wife, Joanne; his children, Andrew (Mineko) Beaman, Lucretia (Philip) Nelson, and Priscilla Beaman; his 
step- sons, Paul Vietzke III and Jeffrey Vietzke; and his grandchildren, Wyatt Nelson, Caleb Nelson, Jonah Nelson, 
Rowan Lull and Catherine Lull. Jim Beaman was born on June 7, 1929 in Jackson, Michigan, the second child of Berry 
and Lucretia Beaman. After graduating from Jackson High School in June, 1947, he attended Miami University of Ohio, 
where he served as social chairman of the Sigma Chi fraternity. After graduating from Miami University, he attended 
Officer Candidate School in Newport and joined the Navy. He served as a gunnery officer aboard the heavy cruiser USS 
Bremerton during the Korean conflict. From 1955 until 1957 he attended the University of Michigan law school in Ann 
Arbor, serving as social chairman of the Phi Delta Phi fraternity, then passed the Michigan bar exam. He practiced as a 
trial lawyer for thirty years in his home town before moving to Honolulu and practicing there until his retirement. All 
his life, Jim loved jazz and classical music, literature and the arts. He took thousands of photographs of people, 
landscapes and flowers. As a young man, he played drums with different jazz ensembles, and he later served for many 
years as chairman of the Jackson Symphony Orchestra. After coming to Honolulu in the 1980s, he continued to attend 
the symphony, and he visited local churches to hear hymns and talk to people. Jim made friends often and easily. He 
was engaging and generous. He loved gardening and swimming and snorkeled at Hanauma Bay, even into his eighties. 
And he passed his love for life, his love of the law, and of music, literature, the arts and nature on to those he knew and 
loved. Memorial Services will be held in Honolulu in the committal court of the National Memorial Cemetery of the 
Pacific at Punchbowl Crater on Wednesday, December 30 at 9:30 a.m., and in Jackson, Michigan at St. Paul's church on

a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and wife of Dr. Harry C.H. Fang, a Professor of Neurology at the 
University of Southern  California who preceded her in death in 1999. Marian was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii. 
After attending St. Andrews Priory, she graduated from the University of Hawaii with a B.S. degree and received a M.S. 
at the University of Pennsylvania. Marian taught science in Florida and Wilmette, Illinois, then fell in love with Harry, 
raising her four children, Farrell, Ferric, Forrest, and Fernette. In Harry, she found the love of her life. Marian and Harry 
enjoyed their family, good friends, the arts, travel, and helping with charitable causes. In addition to their four children, 
Marian had six grandchildren (Lily and Ben Fang, Jamieson and William Sheffield, Krister and Karina Eide) and three

SMITH, DOROTHY B., After 9 years of fighting Breast Cancer, the toughest battle life put forth, Dorothy Brigette 
Artango Smith passed peacefully in the comfort of her home, enveloped in the love of her family in Honolulu, Hawaii 
on Thursday, October 1st 2015. Born February 19, 1968 in Daru Western Papua to the late Ernest Artango and Nancy 
(Tanaka) Artango. She is survived by her husband, Timothy J. Smith and their 4 children; Bresley, Arielle, Alysa and 
Beaudion; Mother Nancy and siblings - Louise, Dale, Ernie, Vallyn and Anthony of Brisbane, Australia. She was talented 
in many areas however, her love for children stood out immensely, enabling her to thrive not only as a mother of her 
own children, but the many children she fostered. She enjoyed all that nature had to offer and had an incredible 
fascination with traveling. Despite Dorothy's daily battles with cancer, she would still place the welfare of others before 
her own. Her drive and compassion was nothing short of monumental, and anything was possible with her optimistic 
attitude. Dorothy was persistent with her studies and in 2011, she earned a degree of Associate in Arts in Business 
Administration from Chaminade University. After this accomplishment, she went on to become a teacher for primary 
students at Makalapa Elementary School. Dorothy was the epitome of strength and never failed to display traits of her 
resilience. Although gone today and incredibly missed, her legacy and memories will live on. A Celebration of Life 
Service will be held on Friday October 16, at 12:30 pm at the Moanalua Mortuary, 1150 Kikowaena Street 96819.
