Building 39 houses the Charles N. and Hilda Mason Law Library, at the David A. Clarke School of Law. In 2004, the law library was dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. Mason to recognize their role in nurturing the growth of the David A. Clarke School of Law. In August 2005, the David A. Clarke School of Law received full accreditation from the American Bar Association

He was the first black to earn a Ph. D. degree from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He served as Southern University's president from 1985-1988
