    Miner Normal School (officially known as Washington Normal School #2) held classes in the Franklin Building from ca. 1873 to 1907. This building was on the Southeast corner of 13rh and K. NW. Designed by Adolph Cuss, the building was completed and became a school in 1868. Prior to the Civil War, D.C. schools were conducted in flimsy frame buildings or rented facilities in church basements. Franklin was originally a white school. It is also where the first wireless telephone was made in 1880. "Normal Instruction" in the Washington Normal School was organized in 1877 for African American Students. Miner became part of the school system in 1879
