John H. Franklin, circa 2005
A portrait of John H. Franklin (1915-2009), who was a graduate of the Class of 1935, was a historian, educator, and author. Franklin's works include "From Slavery to Freedom" (1947), "Racial Equality in America" (1976), and "Mirror to America: The Autobiography of John Hope Franklin" (2005). Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1995, Fisk University Library is named after him and his late wife, Aurelia Elizabeth Franklin

Under Dr. Ammons tenure enrollment at North Carolina Central University reached an all time high, and North Carolina Central University became the fastest growing institution in the University of North Carolina System at that time. Prior to becoming chancellor at North Carolina Central University Dr. Ammons served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Florida A & M University. Dr. James Ammons resigned from the chancellorship at North Carolina Central University in 2007
