    In 1913, Dr. Joseph Samuel Clark accepted the position as president of the "New" Southern University, which opened on March 9, 1914. The area selected belonged to Clive Wetherill Kernan, a slave plantation about seven miles north of Baton Rouge called: Scotlandville, overlooking the Mississippi River. In 1914, The Historic Bell, a relic of slavery, which was used by the plantation owner to summon his black slave workers to the fields, was an instrument and symbol of rebirth used to assemble and awaken students and faculty members to the opportunities of a new day-- (black) students to the classrooms to pursue an education
