Theoretical, Numerical and Experimental Studies on Clean Energy and Combustion
378 p.This topic entitled “Theoretical, Numerical and Experimental Studies on Clean Energy and Combustion” addresses recent theoretical, numerical and experimental advances in clean-combustion-related applications to address climate change concerns while taking advantage of the higher energy density of hydrocarbon and other fossil fuels compared to batteries. With the recent advancements in computational capacities and the widespread applications of machine learning in engineering problems, the role of numerical methods is becoming more and more important to improve existing models or develop new models that can help researchers to better understand the underlying physics of combustion, their interaction with other physical phenomena such as turbulence, and their impacts on the performance of the related applications at both fundamental and practical levels. This topic aimed at highlighting the most recent advances in the development and application of such numerical methods, backed up with strong theories and/or experimental studies
Animal–Computer Interaction: Advances and Opportunities
214 p.We are excited to present this Special Issue, which shares new ideas and developments in the field of Animal–Computer Interaction, including those that advance scientific knowledge about animals, enhance connections between species, improve the stewardship of animals in human care and articulate the design of systems that offer greater autonomy to other species. This collection of articles features research with mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians, including wild, farmed, zoo-housed and working contexts. The diversity of approaches illustrates how technology can be used as a tool to support humans working with both free-roaming and managed animals, facilitating initiatives in conservation, welfare and enrichment. This demonstrates the potential for interesting and insightful collaborations between animal experts and technologists, working together to create an equitable and sustainable future for all species
Perspectives on Conservation Humanities
152 p.Broadly defined, conservation humanities is an emerging paradigm that exists within the larger multi- and inter-disciplinary field of environmental humanities which aims at using humanities-based methods—textual and discourse analysis, philosophical and historical inquiry, ethnographic fieldwork—to shed light on contemporary conservation issues and problems, paramount among them being today’s alarmingly intensifying levels of biodiversity loss. Defining conservation humanities as a paradigm rather than a field is not just a reflection on the fact that its academic status has yet to be fully established. It also suggests that its main value, at least at this preliminary stage, lies in conceptualizing conservation problems rather than in seeking the kinds of direct evidence that might help to solve them, and indeed it shares environmental humanities’ general suspicion towards top-down, solution-driven approaches that fail to take account of local ecological knowledge or confront conspicuously unequal distributions of wealth. However, the task of conservation humanities is not limited to exploring ongoing conservation issues from a wide range of cross-disciplinary humanities perspectives; it is also to ask questions about the changing meanings and functions of conservation and the humanities themselves. This Special Issue, the first dedicated to its subject, asks what role the humanities can play in addressing historical conservation issues, and what humanities scholars can contribute to contemporary conservation debates
Featured Papers in Mathematics and Finance
560 p.The Special Issue titled “Featured Papers in Mathematics and Finance” in the Journal of Risk and Financial Management (JRFM) presents a curated collection of high-quality research articles that advance the theoretical and applied aspects of financial mathematics. It includes pioneering works that explore diverse areas, such as option pricing, asset pricing models, financial risk management, and the interplay between real-world challenges and financial modeling. Notable contributions include innovative methods for implementing implied volatility in high-frequency markets, extensions of classical financial models using Bayesian approaches, and empirical analyses of fiscal consolidation and financial stability. This Special Issue also examines modern topics like the interconnectedness of cryptocurrencies, the impacts of COVID-19 on financial markets, and novel approaches to risk-adjusted portfolio optimization. By featuring studies that integrate cutting-edge mathematical techniques with critical financial applications, this Special Issue acts as a valuable resource for academics, practitioners, and policymakers. These articles highlight the ongoing evolution of mathematical finance, emphasizing its role in addressing contemporary challenges and improving decision-making processes in complex financial systems
Research on Fuzzy Logic and Mathematics with Applications II
480 p.This Special Issue deals with the uncertainty of information in real-world problems and use cases. It is now well-known that fuzzy set theory is a suitable theory in this regard. This theory is a valuable conceptual tool for handling vague concepts and sets forth a unifying framework for modeling various types of information. The motivation and the goal of this Special Issue is to bring together researchers contributing to this exciting field of research and also inspire interested readers and researchers alike to develop effective tools to deal with imprecise and uncertain environments
