Accelerating tooth movement with modified surgical and dentoalveolar distraction technique- a case report

    No full text
The duration of treatment is the most concern among orthodontic patients. It is of a challenge for an orthodontist to shorten the treatment time. A new surgical technique was introduced to accelerate tooth movement during orthodontic treatment. This new technique is the surgical reduction of bone mass in the pathway of desired tooth movement before orthodontic treatment. This case report explained the treatment of a 21-year-old male patient with severe-to-moderate crowded dentition and he requested to get the treatment done in a short period of time. Upper right first premolar and lower left second premolar were extracted, the bone in the desired pathway of all teeth movement was reduced and the dentoalveolar distraction procedure performed using nickel-titanium closing coil spring and rubber power chain. Full teeth alignment was achieved in 3 months period and the anchorage teeth were able to withstand the retraction forces with minimal anchorage loss

Introduction: The objectives of the study were to evaluate the prevalence of orofacial injuries in soccer players of a Brazilian club, considering the category, the position in the field, and the most affected anatomic site, through medical records. Methods: A total of 126 charts of players from the base categories (sub-15, sub-17, and sub-20) and male and female professional categories from 2016 to 2018 were evaluated. It was considered inclusion criteria to be a soccer player hired by a club in the indicated period. The exclusion criteria of the study correspond to the medical records registered after the chronological date stipulated or that did not have the correct registry of the occurred trauma. Results: The data analyzed presented a moderate value in relation to the orofacial traumas prevalence, and 64.3% of the athletes of the club have some record type of trauma in the face. We observed that soft-tissue lacerations of the lips and dental fractures present the highest frequencies (73% and 27%, respectively). The positions of defender, striker, and midfield are the most susceptible to injuries (31%, 24%, and 23%, respectively). Conclusion: Dental and orofacial trauma are a problem commonly encountered in sports, being present also in collective sports, such as football. It was observed a moderate prevalence of injuries on the face, especially among the athletes who are ahead of the attack line, with lip lacerations and dental fractures being the most common events

Percutaneous coronary intervention in four month old infant for acute myocardial ischemia after repaired ALCAPA

    No full text
Anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) is rare, but life-threatening condition. The treatment of choice in patients with ALCAPA is the establishment of a dual coronary artery system with surgical reimplantation of the left coronary artery in the left coronary sinus. Percutaneous coronary intervention is infrequent in the pediatric population but can be a life-saving by promptly restoring flow to an obstructed coronary artery. It is a highly demanding and high-risk procedure in infants due to the technical difficulties and the small coronary artery diameter in infants

    Perfusion magnetic resonance neuroimaging

    Get PDF
The clinical appliance of perfusion is being continuously developed and it is closely related to technology development. The role of perfusion neuroimaging in the management of acute stroke has been to prove reduced regional blood flow and to give the contribution in the identification of ischemic areas, respectively the regions of hypoperfusion that can be treated by thrombolytic and/or endovascular recanalization therapy. There are two main approaches to the measurement of cerebral perfusion by magnetic resonance. The aim of this article is to compare different measuring approaches of MR perfusion neuroimaging

Fenestration of the vertebral artery presented by computed tomography angiography of the neck\u27s blood vessels: A case study

    Get PDF
Vertebral artery fenestration is a rare vascular anomaly. It most commonly occurs in extracranial segments of the vertebral artery. This congenital anomaly can occur during the various stages of embryonic development of the vertebral artery. This usually does not have clinical significance, but the possibility of associated anomalies such as saccular aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations should be noted. Awareness of vascular anomalies is key to avoiding iatrogenic injury during endovascular diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Here, we present incidental findings of vertebral artery fenestration in a 46-year-old woman evidenced by CT angiography of the neck\u27s blood vessells after I .V. contrast medium applications

Mediolateral oblique projection in mammography: use of different angulation for patients with different thorax anatomies

    Get PDF
Introduction: The literature describes that MLO projection is not done only with angulation of 45° but there is a wider span of angles that can be used. Therefore, we have investigated if the use of alternative angulation in mammographic imaging in relation to specific patient anatomies shows more breast tissue. Methods: MLO mammograms form 491 patients that had a mammography imaging performed at alternative and basic angulation were included in the study. Angulation of 55° was performed when patient had small breasts and convex sternum. The angle of 35° was used for patients with large breasts and concave sternum as well as for patients with shorter thoraxes. Measurements assessed the width of the pectoral muscle, the retromammary part, and the inframammary part of the breast for both projections (alternative and basic). Results: When comparing the angulations of 45° and 55°, all three measured widths were in favor of 55°: the pectoral muscle was on average wider by 4%, the basal part by 1.3%, and the inframammary part by 29%. When comparing angulations of 35° and 45°, at the angulation of 35°, the basal part was wider by 3.3% and inframammary part by 32.4%. There were no differences in the width of the pectoral muscle between mentioned angulations. Conclusion: Based on our results, we recommend the use of a 55° angle as more appropriate for patients with longer thoraxes and small breasts and the use of a 35° angle for those with shorter thoraxes and large breasts

Women\u27s education and profession midwifery in Nordic countries

Introduction: Help at birth is one of the historically oldest volunteers supports that a woman has offered to another woman. One of the reasons for high maternal and infant mortality was identified as a lack of basic medical knowledge among the woman who helped during birth and this required immediate action to secure the survival of nations. When the Church and government made demands for education and professional license, the voluntary help at birth transformed into an educated and paid profession for women. The study aimed to describe the evolution of women’s education and the midwifery profession in Nordic countries from the 1600s until today. Methods: Historical and contemporary documents, research and grey literature, are drawn together to provide a historical description of the midwifery professional development and education in Nordic countries. Results: In the Nordic countries, governments from the 1600s had significant problems with high maternal and infant mortality. Most vulnerable were unmarried women and their children. To change the trend, northern countries had been inspired by France, Holland, England, and Germany, which had introduced education and a professional license for midwives. The targeted and systematic investment in midwifery education, followed by industrialization and welfare development in Nordic countries, has resulted in one of the highest survival rates for mothers and infants in the world today. In parallel with this, it has created the first female paid profession in history. Today, midwifery education is at the university level in all Nordic countries, and the certified midwife is responsible for pre- and post-natal care and normal birth. In Sweden, Norway, and Iceland, the midwife’s responsibility also includes contraception counseling and prescription of drugs for birth control purposes. Conclusions: The education and professional licenses have contributed to a progressively improved care of birth women and infants. The professional and licensed midwife is positioned in society as an essential player in the current development of pre- and post-natal care. Furthermore, the graduated and licensed midwife positioned herself as the first paid professional female profession in modern history

Introduction: Dietary supplements are an important source of vitamins and minerals that may help prevent several disease-causing biological pathways involved in one-carbon metabolism, including the suppression of cell proliferation, oxidative stress, nitric oxide synthesis, and angiogenesis. The present study aimed to assess the association between the intake of folate, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, and minerals and the consumption of alcohol among university students. Methods: This study was participated by students aged 19-22 years from the University of Sarajevo between 2017 and 2018. Using a questionnaire, we interviewed in a week them to collect information regarding age, socio-economic status, alcohol consumption, and dietary supplement intake. Then, we investigated the association between the baseline intake of folate, B vitamins, and minerals and that of alcohol consumption. Results: Most students consumed Vitamin B supplements (32%) and folic acid (10%). Dietary multivitamins and minerals were less prevalent in more than a year, accounting for 186 (23.9%) and 174 (24.3%) students, respectively, than those in less than a year. In a year, <20% of students consumed multivitamins 129 (16.6%) and minerals 116 (15.3%). Meanwhile, 256 (27.1%) students consumed alcohol. The Chi-square test of independence showed that drinking habits and the intake of such dietary supplements had no association (p > 0.05). Conclusion: An extremely low percentage of the participating students in Canton Sarajevo used dietary supplements of Vitamin B, folate, multivitamins, and minerals. Moreover, alcohol consumption and dietary supplement intake were not associated. Further research is needed to establish the best cost-effective public health system to achieve a sufficient intake of dietary supplements

    Get PDF
Introduction: Determining the research priorities in Evidence-Based Nursing Care is considered as a regular method to provide substantive information for developing the nursing science and taking evidence-based practical steps but such research is currently minimal. Therefore, a Delphi survey was conducted to determine the research priorities in Evidence-Based Nursing Care in the North of Iran. Methods: A three-round Delphi study was conducted to identify research priorities in Evidence-Based Nursing Care. The study comprised of research nurses, who have attended a Research Methodology course and did have published research. A Delphi expert panel consists of a group of credible experts within the field attending in consensus meetings to determine the nursing research top priorities. Open-ended questions were analyzed using thematic content analysis. Analysis of questionnaires 2 and 3 entailed an examination of the mean scores for each priority ranked on the five-point Likert scale. Results: Round 1 had 42 themes across 174 topics, identified by analyzing the data. In Round 2, respondents ranked all themes and 30 themes were selected. Finally, in Round 3, the top five research priorities emerged as the following: Assurance in health care, nurse-patient communication, pain management, taking care of the patients under mechanical ventilation and drug care. Conclusions: Determining research priorities in the Evidence-Based Nursing Care would optimize the level of utilization of the results of the studies by nurses and subsequently could improve the delivery of evidence-based nursing services; Prioritization will also help in directing resources to the essential research needs. &nbsp
