Real-Time HIL Simulation for Frequency Regulation in DFIG with AGC: An Egyptian Case Study

    No full text
49th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, IECON 2023 -- 16 October 2023 through 19 October 2023 -- Singapore -- 194573A sudden change in loads creates troubles in grids/microgrids (MGs) such as frequency fluctuations. For balancing between generation and demand, a Doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) has been incorporated into the Egyptian power system (EG-EPS) to provide additional inertia. The studied EG-EPS consists of three conventional power plants (reheat, non-reheat, and hydro) as the main sources of generation, with 20% DFIG participation. The existing literature highlights that the control methods employ for LFC and DFIG in MGs are insufficiently coordinated for minimizing deviations in frequency and power. This limitation arises due to narrow control constraints and inadequate sensitivity to disturbances. To this regard, this paper proposes an adaptive control-based balloon effect modulation (BE) to tune the PID controller for the Automatic Generation Control (AGC) and to tune the PI controller of the DFIG speed controller. The balloon effect tool is used to minimize the impact of system load disturbance by increasing the optimizer sensitivity and traceability. The EG-EPS is examined under the influence of a 2% step load perturbation and random load variations using dSPACE DS1006 and real-time digital simulator (RTDS) as a Hard-In-Loop (HIL) test platform. The proposed controller demonstrates superior performance compared to the conventional one in terms of overshoot, undershoot, and stabilizing time. © 2023 IEEE.Ministry of Higher Education of the Arab Republic of Egypt; Villum Fonden, (25920); Villum Fonde

7th International Symposium on Innovative Approaches in Smart Technologies, ISAS 2023 -- 23 November 2023 through 25 November 2023 -- Istanbul -- 196776Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as a transformative asset in surveillance, mapping, and delivery tasks since they have sophisticated autonomous capabilities. This paper focuses on enhancing the UAV autonomy by addressing the autonomous detection of suitable landing sites and safe landing flight planning, which are both critical in emergency scenarios. To mitigate the possible risks during the flight tests, vision-based sensors and image processing techniques, along with the developed guidance and control algorithms are evaluated in Software in the Loop (SIL) simulation using the Robot Operating System (ROS) and Gazebo simulation environments. The key novelty of this paper is proposing a vision-based hybrid LQR-integrator flight planning strategy for safe landing and optimal control of the UAVs. Therefore, this paper incorporates the image processing techniques for the landing site detection and UAV kinematics for safe and autonomous landing on the selected site. Further contributions of this paper are the selection of a compatible image processing technique, translation of the selected site position data into a control reference frame, development of a novel controller strategy, and the utilization of an observer for destination verification. Through the comprehensive simulations using Gazebo and ROS, the paper evaluates the effectiveness of the proposed framework, paving the way for further real-world testing and implementation. © 2023 IEEE.Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştırma Kurumu, TÜBİTAK, (120 M793

Objective: Gender affects how we serve and receive medical care. World Health Organization evaluates gender as a social determinant of health. However, a knowledge gap exists among GAMS) in the Turkish language and define Turkish medical students' gender awareness level and related factors. Methods: Two hundred seventy-two medical students participated in this cross-sectional study. The GAMS were utilized to collect data; in addition to sociodemographic form. Results: Cronbach Alpha value for the gender sensitivity subscale of Turkish N-GAMS was calculated as 0.810, gender role ideology towards patients as 0.919, and gender role ideology towards doctors as 0.896. In the confirmatory factor analysis conducted for the scale's factor structure, the scale had a three-factor structure consisting of gender sensitivity, gender role ideology towards patients, and gender role ideology towards doctors, which are interrelated. In the criterionrelated validity analysis, gender sensitivity was associated with empathy (r=0.206 p=0.001) and benevolent sexism (r=0.148 p=0.015). Gender role ideology toward patients scores was related to male gender (t=3.920 p<0.001), low empathy (r=-0.159 p=0.009), hostile sexism (r=0.638 p<0.001), and benevolent sexism (r=0.545 p<0.001). Gender role ideology towards doctors was related to male gender (t=2.669 p=0.008), low empathy (r=-0.143 p=0.018), hostile sexism (r=0.618 p<0.001), and benevolent sexism (r=0.573 p<0.001).Conclusions: N-GAMS is valid and reliable among Turkish medical students. Turkish medical students in our sample are less gender-sensitive than their European counterparts. There is a need for education on gender awareness in medical schools

Background: Pistacia vera L. (green pistachio) has been shown to increase antioxidant capacity and protect against cardiovascular diseases and cancer. This study investigated the protective effect of the Pistacia vera L. hull in rats with experimental cardiac damage induced by doxorubicin. Methods: Sixty adult Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into 5 groups (n=12). Sham, doxorubicin, doxorubicin + Pistacia vera L. extract 50 mg/kg, doxorubicin + Pistacia vera L. extract 100 mg/kg, and Pistacia vera L. extract 100 mg/kg. Biochemistry param- eters, total antioxidant status, total oxidant status, oxidative stress index, 8-hydroxy- deoxyguanosine, and caspase 3/7 values were measured in serum samples. Excised heart tissues were examined histopathologically. Results: The groups were statistically significantly different in 8-hydroxy-deoxyguanosine, caspase 3/7, total antioxidant status, total oxidant status, oxidative stress index, and basal biochemical parameter values (P < .05, P < .001). In group II, 8-hydroxy-deoxyguanosine, caspase 3/7, and total oxidant status values increased while the total antioxidant status value decreased (P < .001). In the treatment groups (group III and group IV), 8-hydroxy- deoxyguanosine and caspase 3/7 values decreased compared to group II (P < .001). While total oxidant status and oxidative stress index values decreased in the treatment groups, total antioxidant status values increased (P < .001). The histopathological examination of the heart revealed fewer areas of focal necrosis in the treatment groups compared to group II. Conclusion: In this study, the cardioprotective effect of Pistacia vera L. hull extract was investigated in vivo. It was shown that Pistacia vera L. hull extract reduced apoptosis and deoxyribonucleic acid damage in the face of cardiac damage and had antioxidant activ- ity. Future studies will increase our knowledge on this subject

Ethical Climate: Exploring the Knowledge Base

    No full text
The ethical climate concept has emerged as an influential paradigm in the 1990s, following the study of business ethics centered on corporate scandals. Extensive studies and reviews have been fueled by thirty years of knowledge accumulation. However, few bibliometric studies are conducted, and none focus on the knowledge base.Using bibliometric analyses, this study aims to investigate knowledge base for ethical climate from 1988 to 2022.Authors, journals, and documents were initially examined in terms of production, citation, and co-citation analyses using an integrated thematic approach.Next, the conceptual patterns through co- occurrence analyses and the structure of international collaboration were investigated. Bibliometric analyses show that the rapidly growing body of literature in the 2000s has shifted its focus to areas like sales and marketing and, particularly, the nursing environment. The study provides readers with a roadmap and recommendations for further study

Investigation of the construction and demolition materials reinforced by geosynthetics

    No full text
Many researchers suggest using construction and demolition materials in engineering applications (C & D) rather than virgin aggregates (VA). However, the engineering properties of the C & D tend to be poorer than those of the VA. This study presents the results of plate loading tests performed on unpaved roads with the C & D, reinforced by different types of geosynthetics on the soft subgrade. As part of these tests, the effects of some geosynthetics' parameters such as (1) the embedment depth, (2) height and pocket opening of geocell, (3) the embedment depths and number of geogrids, (4) the distance between geogrids, and (5) the stiffness of geotextile on the bearing capacity of the unpaved road were investigated. Besides, the same plate loading test was also conducted on an unpaved road built by the VA. As a result of this study, although the performance of the C & D was determined to be less than that of the VA, it was concluded that the C & D performed well enough to be used as an alternative to the VA on unpaved roads. Besides, with a very small number of geosynthetics, it was determined that the C & D could have a better performance than that of the VA

Implementation of shear-locking-free triangular refined zigzag element for structural analysis of multilayered plates with curvilinear fibers

    No full text
Modeling and analysis of composites with curvilinear fiber reinforcement is rather challenging in terms of ac-curacy and computational cost associated with variable material stiffness. In this study, to reduce the compu-tational cost drastically without sacrificing the numerical accuracy, variable stiffness composite laminate (VSCL) is modelled as a single layer based on the refined zigzag theory (RZT). To this end, a three-node triangle RZT element formulation is adopted and effectively implemented for static analysis of multilayer composites and sandwich plates with curvilinear fiber paths. Moreover, to accurately model the strains in VSCL, the derivatives of the zigzag functions with respect to planar coordinates are considered for each ply within the laminate in the RZT kinematic-strain relations. Enhanced capability of the present model is verified by performing compre-hensive numerical investigation on several benchmark cases. The obtained results are compared with those present in the literature and three-dimensional elasticity solutions. Hence, it is demonstrated that the triangular RZT element is a fast, robust, and accurate structural analysis platform that can potentially lend itself to the optimization of curvilinear fiber angles of VSCL

Numerical Investigation of the Passive Flow Control Around a Circular Cylinder

    No full text
The effects of a perforated cylinder on the passive flow control around a circular cylinder mounted on a wall were investigated. The perforated cylinder was placed outside of the single circular cylinder concentrically. The large-eddy simulation was used to resolve the flow field. The study was aimed at both reducing the drag coefficient of the single cylinder and controlling the fluctuating forces acting on the single cylinder caused by vortex shedding in the downstream wake. The results showed that the structure of the downstream wake flow of the single cylinder changed significantly after placing the perforated cylinder. For example, von Karman vortices disappeared, and the maximum magnitude of turbulent kinetic energy, TKE, in the downstream wake was reduced. The time-averaged drag coefficient of the single cylinder was decreased by 69%. In addition, the maximum value of the lift coefficient of the single cylinder was reduced by eight times when the perforated cylinder was placed outside the single cylinder
