    Why so serious?. The role of interpersonal conflict management styles in affiliative humour1

    Purpose. The purpose of this study is to examine how affiliative humour, which can be defined as a positive humour style focusing on enhancing connections, is associated with collaborating, compromising, and avoiding conflict management styles in organisations. Study design. An online survey was conducted following the convenience sampling method to test the proposed hypotheses. The sample consisted of 257 teachers working at public schools in Adana, who are master's degree students in Adana Alparslan Turkes Science and Technology University, Turkey. Exploratory factor analysis, correlation analysis, and regression analysis were conducted in line with the research goals. Findings. As a result, affiliative humour was found to be significantly correlated with compromising and collaborating. Nonetheless, avoiding was found to have no significant relationship with affiliative humour. Compromising was the only significant variable in the regression model, which explained a limited variance in affiliative humour. Implications for practice. Managers may deliberately tend to produce humour to benefit from it in conflicting situations. Nonetheless, managerial control for the use of humour does not guarantee the expected productivity. Therefore, employees may be advised to acknowledge the benefits of positive humour styles - in case of this study, affiliative humour - in managing interpersonal conflicts. Value of the results. To the best of the authors' knowledge, a limited number of studies exist focusing directly on the association between affiliative humour and interpersonal conflict. Hence, the results are considered to fill the gap in the literature by clarifying that compromising is the only conflict management style that has a positive impact on affiliative humour

    Variation of bioactive potentials during the production of enzyme-modified cheese

    Milk proteins are a known source of bioactive peptides released through proteolysis. Enzyme-modified cheese (EMC), produced with high proteolysis levels, has the potential to provide such peptides. This study aimed to explore the bioactive potentials (antioxidant, antihypertensive, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, and antiproliferative potentials) of EMC during production stages and after in vitro digestion. Results showed remarkable increases in antioxidant activities and sustained ACE inhibition activity values with each production stage. The samples inhibited a-amylase activity before in vitro digestion, while significant inhibition of a-glucosidase activity was observed after digestion. Furthermore, antimicrobial effects on Staphylococcus aureus were observed after digestion, with limited antiproliferative effects on various cancer cells. The study demonstrates the potential of EMC to positively impact body functions through its bioactive properties.     Tarih araştırmaları, köklü bir geçmişe sahip olan Türkçe öğretiminin hem bugünün değerlendirilmesine hem de geleceğinin tartışılmasına zemin hazırlamaktadır. Türkçe öğretim tarihi; genellikle öğretim programları, ders kitapları ve belli başlı eğitimcilerin görüşleri temel alınarak incelenmektedir. Bunların yanı sıra haber değeri taşıyan olaylara ilişkin bilgi içeren gazeteler de Türkçe öğretiminin tarihinin aydınlatılmasında önemli bir kaynak niteliği taşımaktadır. Bir kentteki sorun ve gelişmelere odaklanan yerel gazetelerde Türkçe öğretimiyle ilgili çeşitli haberler yer alabilmektedir. Bu bağlamda Türkiye’nin en eski yerel gazetesi olan Yeni Adana gazetesi, Türkçe öğretim tarihi açısından incelenebilecek bir kaynaktır. Bu çalışmada 1938-1955 yılları arasında Yeni Adana gazetesinde yayımlanmış Türkçe öğretimiyle ilgili haberleri belirlemek ve tematik olarak sınıflandırmak amaçlanmıştır. Nitel modeldeki bu çalışmada doküman incelemesi yöntemi kullanılmış, veriler içerik analizi tekniğiyle çözümlenmiştir. Çalışmada halka Türkçe öğretimi, okuma eğitimi, ders kitapları, sosyal etkinlikler, Türkçe öğretmenleri ve diğer konularla ilgili doksan bir haber tespit edilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonuçları, günümüz Türkçe öğretiminin tarihsel bir yaklaşımla kapsamlı bir biçimde değerlendirilebilmesine olanak sunmaktadır

    Changes in the salaries of mining engineers as they obtain managerial and OHS specialist positions in Turkey: By what criteria can salaries be increased?

    The duty of the permanent supervisors, each of whom is a mining engineer, is to ensure that the operational activities are conducted efficiently in line with the production plan in the mining enterprises. In addition, ensuring that businesses operate in compliance with OHS is also the supervisors' responsibility. In the event of a mining occupational accident in a mining operation, the enterprise in question encounters large costs. These costs can even lead to the closure or bankruptcy of the operation. Supervisors have a great function in regards to averting the occurrence of these kinds of situations. Considering that supervisors undertake different duties such as management and OHS expertise in mining enterprises in Turkey, it is expected that supervisors will be paid adequately. The supervisors undertaking all these duties make great contributions to companies by helping to make their mining operations suitable for productivity and OHS. In this study, the extent to which the job, working experience, and gender differences of the supervisors in Turkey change their salaries, and the change in their salaries as they obtain managerially and OHS specialist positions were analyzed. In addition, it was determined whether the salaries of the supervisors changed according to the mineral groups and open pit/underground operation methods. Considering the results of this analysis and the general life indexes of the supervisors in the cities they work, the relationship between their salaries and welfare levels was demonstrated. Supervisor salaries are compared with workers' minimum wages and the poverty line. It was tried to find answers to the questions of what kind of increases can be made in their salaries considering the mining operating conditions/economy rather than the reasons for their low wages in their countries. In view of the duties, authorities, and responsibilities of the supervisors in their operations and their role in reducing operating costs, suggestions were made to increase their salaries. Considering the share of supervisors in mining operating costs, choosing persuasive methods for both the government and operations is required. In this direction, a salary increase can be provided to the supervisors by giving a premium over the operating profits or pit sale prices, or a premium can be given to the supervisors if they spend a certain number of days without an occupational accident or stopping the mine

    Frothing Performance of Frother-Collector Mixtures as Determined by Dynamic Foam Analyzer and Its Implications in Flotation

    In recent years, most of the studies have been adapted to determine the optimum conditions for the flotation of very fine minerals. In this context, besides parameters such as particle size, morphology, and pH, the effects of frother type and its concentration present a very significant role in optimizing the flotation conditions. Therefore, the effects of froth stability during flotation can be considered one of the most important issues. Considering that knowledge in mind, in this study, the foamability and froth decay rate of six frothers (PPG200, PPG400, PPG600, BTEG, BTPG, and BDPG) having different molecular weights but similar polyglycol structures were investigated. In addition, methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) which is a well-known frother type in the industry was also used as a reference. Additionally, a series of tests were also performed in the presence of collectors (Dodecylamine hydrochloride, DAH, and sodium oleate, NaOL) + frother mixtures to mimic the flotation conditions. The results of these tests indicated that the bubble size became finer at even low concentrations of PPG600 and PPG400 frothers.     A Novel Generation PV Panel Assisted Hybrid Rotary Energy System with Improved Performance and Design Qualities

    Greenhouse gases emission have become a worldwide issue. To mitigate the environmental damage caused by global warming, energy systems based on renewable energy sources should be developed. The number of applications of solar and wind energy in various hybrid structures has greatly expanded. Planning the amount of space necessary for solar and wind energy system installations is one of the most difficult aspects of these energy systems. A novel generation rotary energy system (RES) is proposed in this paper for places with high solar and wind energy potential. By supplying energy demand from a hybrid construction, space will be saved. Solar panels are mounted on the RES's side surfaces. In experimental studies on the roof of Adana Alparslan Turkes Science and Technology University (ATU), the developed controller for the RES has recorded the power produced by the RES by operating it at various rotational speeds. The RES that has been developed is intended to be integrated into high-rise buildings. According to the results of the experiments, the RES has a great deal of potential to become an industrial product if it can be manufactured at higher power levels

    Analysis of mixed optical transitions in dilute magnetic AlAs/GaAs/ GaMnAs quantum wells grown on high substrate index by molecular beam epitaxy

    In this study, we report the influence of high-index substrate orientation on the optical properties of dilute Mn containing a single quantum well (QW) structure grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The electronic band structure of the samples is calculated with finite element methods (FEM). Photomodulated reflectance (PR) spectroscopy is employed to determine the optical transition energies at room temperature. PR experimental results are analyzed with the Third Derivative Functional Form (TDFF) signal function. TDFF fitting shows that the optical transition starts below the fundamental GaAs bandgap energy for the samples grown on (311) B and (411) B-oriented substrates. Comparing TDFF fitting and calculated optical transition energies with FEM show that the optical transition occurs in type-I and type-II as direct and indirect transitions, respectively.     Magnetocaloric effect in PrGd1-xBaxMn2O6 (0.0 ? x ? 1.0) double perovskite manganite system

    The PrGd1-xBaxMn2O6 (x = 0.0, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 1.0) double-perovskite manganite samples produced by solid-state reaction method have been investigated in this study. The samples were crystallized in the form of orthorhombic structure with the Pbnm space group confirmed by the Rietveld refinement method. The temperature-dependent magnetization measurements (M(T)) revealed that the samples display a phase transition from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic as temperature increased. The results obtained from these measurements indicate that the Curie temperature values increased from 44 to 187.8 K, respectively, by increasing the Ba concentration from x = 0.0-1.0. The isothermal magnetization curves are achieved by external magnetic field-dependent magnetization measurements (M(H)) and help to calculate the magnetic entropy change (- Delta S-M) values, and to find the nature of magnetic phase transition. Maximum magnetic entropy change (Delta S-M(max)) values are found as 2.81, 2.76, 2.99, 3.44, 2.77, and 2.14 Jkg(-1) K-1 under 5 T magnetic field change for x = 0.0, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8, 0.9, 1.0 samples, respectively. Arrott plots created from the isothermal magnetization curves show that all samples have a second-order magnetic phase transition.     Noncovalent chemistry of xenon opens the door for anesthetic xenon recovery using Bio-MOFs

    Designing an inexpensive and highly efficient recovery process for xenon (Xe) is gaining importance in the development of sustainable applications. Using metal organic frameworks (MOFs) for separating Xe from anesthetic gas mixtures has been a recent topic studied rarely and superficially in the literature. We theoretically investigated Xe recovery performances of 43 biological MOFs (Bio-MOFs) formed by biocompatible metal cations and biological endogenous linkers. Xe uptakes and Xe permeabilities in its binary mixtures with CO2, O2, and N2 were investigated by applying Grand Canonical Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics simulations. Materials with metalloporphyrin, hexacarboxylate, triazine, or pyrazole ligands, dimetallic paddlewheel units, relatively large pore sizes (PLD > 5 Å and LCD > 10 Å), large void fractions (?0.8), and large surface areas (>2900 m2 g?1) have been determined as top performing Bio-MOFs for Xe recovery. By applying Density Functional Theory simulations and generating electron density difference maps, we determined that Xe-host interactions in the top performing Bio-MOFs are maximized mainly due to noncovalent interactions of Xe, such as charge-induced dipole and aerogen-? interactions. Polarized Xe atoms in the vicinity of cations/anions as well as ? systems are fingerprints of enhanced guest-host interactions.
