More Inclusive Collection Development: Considering the Information Needs of Researchers from Outside the Subject Area of Communication
No full textWhen conducting collection development, it can be assumed that librarians consider the research needs of scholars within their respective disciplines. How systematically librarians consider the needs of scholars outside the discipline, however, has not been established. This study investigates whether resources scholars from outside a discipline use differ from the resources that scholars within a specific discipline use and offers a model for evaluating engagement with core journals outside of the discipline. Focusing on the subject area of communication, the data provided in this study demonstrate the importance of assessing the information needs of researchers from outside the discipline to build a more useful and inclusive journal collection and provide communication librarians with data to guide their collection decisions. Up to twenty years of journal citation data from the Web of Science database were collected and analyzed for thirty-nine communication journals. The author identifies the most and least cited communication journals by researchers outside the discipline to support collection development decisions that meet the needs of all researchers

A Holistic Assessment of Spanish Gift Books
No full textLibrary gifts-in-kind are a mixed blessing: their potential utility must be weighed against the resources required to add them to a collection. Understanding the value such materials can bring to the library is essential. In academic libraries, donations from faculty members may be assumed to be more appropriate and useful additions to the collection. This evaluation used multiple methods to assess the value of several hundred gift books donated by a professor in support of the Spanish program at Concordia University. Parameters examined include age, language, subjects and their relation to the curriculum, usage, and availability in other libraries

Couples who Collaborate: Chana and Larry Stiefel
No full textChana and Larry Stiefel are new to publishing as a couple but bring with them a wealth of diverse experiences. Chana has written and published more than thirty books for children. She writes both fiction and nonfiction, ranging in topics from avocadoes to zombies. Recently, Let Liberty Rise (2021) was named a Bank Street Best Book for Children (ages 5–9) and received a starred review in School Library Journal. Her forthcoming book, The Tower of Life: How Yaffa Eliach Rebuilt her Town in Stories and Photographs (2022) is a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard Selection, and received a starred review from School Library Journal
Out of Many, One: Practicing Defensive Librarianship
No full textFifty-two books in Utah’s Alpine School District. Forty-three books in Oklahoma. Thirty books in Kansas. Four hundred sixty five books in Pennsylvania’s Central York School District; 204 books in Florida; 713 books in Texas, with 435 bans in North East Independent School District. Eight hundred books in Texas legislator Matt Krause’s list of books for investigation. The list goes on, the numbers go up, almost all exclusively targeting books by and about people of color and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.While censorship has long been an issue for libraries, this past year has brought a record number of ban requests across the nation—more than fifteen hundred tracked by PEN America between July 2021 and March 2022. Libraries are also becoming sites for protest—against Drag Queen Story Times, appearances by BIPoC and queer authors, Rainbow Clubs for teens, and other inclusive programming
“He Lied to the People, Saying ‘I Am Nebuchadnezzar’”: Issues in Authority Control for Rebels, Usurpers, Eccentric Nobility, and Dissenting Royalty
No full textCurrent cataloging guidelines for creating name authority records (NARs) for royalty and nobility assume that an individual’s claim to a royal title is clear and unambiguous. In the case of historical rebels, usurpers, and eccentrics who claim royal titles for themselves, however, the guidelines are not so clear. When we attempt to describe people and places from a disputed past, we actively enter into their struggles for power, but rules documents like Resource Description and Access (RDA) do not address the question of the legitimacy of a claimed title. Fortunately, recent scholarship on self-determination in NARs for living creators and subject terminology for contested political jurisdictions can help us to develop more ethical practices for historical names of ambiguous legitimacy. This paper uses the Nidintu-Bēl/Nebuchadnezzar III, a rebel against the Achaemenid emperor Darius I named in the Behistun Inscription (6th century BCE), as a case study to establish best practices for the identity management of historical representatives of dissenting royalty

School Age Programs and Services Committee: Learning Beyond: Twenty-First-Century Summer and Out of School Time Toolkit
No full textThis fall, library staff serving school-age children have a new ALSC toolkit with a supportive framework that applies year round: Learning Beyond, available online at https://bit.ly/3FR5BUT. Here are a couple key tools from the work that I think especially apply to programs and services during this school year.Firstly, the case studies in each section show how libraries of different sizes and structures put these tools into practice. This grounded approach ties together the breadth of ALSC membership and illuminates the structure and topics with examples. These examples are from the task force members’ own experiences leading this work and many center on STEAM as a tool for building equity and access. Case studies are handy for demonstrating proven relevant results of investing in scientific and makerspace equipment and programming partnerships to funders in your community and your boss or board
