The Evolution of Letitia Pate Evans Hall 
Honoring the Past 
James R. McCain, president of Agnes Scott College from 1923 to 
1951, had a vision. McCain's dream to construct a gathering place 
for students, faculty, staff and alumnae of the College became the 
motivation for the construction of Letitia Pate Evans Hall. 
Although general plans for the building were drawn almost 10 
years before its construction, it was only when McCain suggested 
naming the building for Letitia Pate Evans of Hot Springs, Va., 
that his dream began to take shape. 
After Evans agreed to have the building named in her honor, the 
plans were redrawn to create a distinctive gathering place for the 
College community. The revised plans for the building called for 
a large main dining hall along with a Faculty Dining Room, a 
dining room for guests of the College and a Banquet Room 
located on the lower level. 
McCain wanted a building that would stand the test of time. 
When constructed, the $525,000 building was one of the most 
modern collegiate dining halls in the United States. The building 
featured impressive architectural details interwoven into its 
design, including the Evans family coat-of-arms over four door- 
ways and the famous quote above the entrance to the dining hall 
servery. Taken from Shakespeare's play Macbeth, the quote "Now, 
good digestion wait on appetite, and health on both!" has been 
maintained in the renovation and remains above the entrance to 
the servery. 
The Letitia Pate Evans Dining Hall was dedicated Monday, 
November 30, 1950. · 
Serving the Future 
Letitia Pate Evans Hall re-opened fall semester 1999, after nearly a 
year of construction. The renovations to Evans Hall serve as the 
first major project in the $100 million building program outlined 
in the College's 1997 Master Plan. 
The planning team developed a list of improvements to meet the 
growing needs of the institution. Among these were increased 
seating, improved lighting in some areas of the building, the 
addition of air conditioning in the kitchen area, added space for 
food service and improved acoustic and audiovisual support in the 
banquet room on the lower level. The planning committee 
stressed the concept of creating a true conference and banquet 
space on the lower level. 
New Features 
• Plantation-grown, Brazilian cherry hardwood floors in the 
main dining hall. 
• Enlarged President's Dining Room for special events. 
• Monumental staircase to the lower level. 
• Alcove storage areas for book bags, keys, etc., keeping the 
tradition of students dropping off their personal belongings. 
• New conference facilities downstairs. With the addition of 
modular walls, the space can be used for banquet functions or 
smaller meetings. 
• Stone from Tennessee has been added to the entrance and the 
monumental staircase. This stone is the same kind as used in 
the entrance to the Library and in other locations on campus. 
• Almost triple the space in the food servery. 
The Marche Dining Concept 
In the style of a French marketplace, marche dining at Agnes 
Scott offers students more options for their meals. The expanded 
servery, almost three times the size of the original, boasts an open 
kitchen where students can watch the freshest foods cooked to 
order. A variety of savory entrees are served, including cuisine 
from around the world. There is also a large salad bar, pasta 
station, a deli area, a grille, a bakery and an area serving all the 
traditional favorites. 
Letitia Pate Whitehead Evans 
Born in Bedford County, Va., in 1872, Letitia (Lettie) Pate was 
educated at private schools in Bedford and Lynchburg. She 
married Joseph Brown Whitehead in 1895 and had two sons, 
Joseph B., Jr., and Conkey Pate. The family moved to Atlanta in 
1899 after Mr. Whitehead and a friend secured exclusive rights to 
bottle and sell Coca-Cola throughout most of the United States. 
After her husband's death in 1906 from pneumonia, Mrs. 
Whitehead assumed control of her husband's business interests, 
running both the Whitehead Holding Company and the 
Whitehead Realty Company. Mrs. Whitehead, who later married 
Arthur Kelly Evans, became one of the first women to serve on 
the board of directors of a major American corporation when she 
was appointed in 1934 to the board of The Coca-Cola Company, 
a position she held for almost 20 years. She generously shared her 
wealth both during her lifetime and after her death through 
numerous foundations. She created and left much of her estate to 
the Lettie Pate Evans Foundation to support charity, education 
and religion. The estates of her sons, who died before her, also 
support charitable foundations such as the Lettie Pate Whitehead 
Foundation, Inc. which funds scholarships for women students. 
Mrs. Evans served as a trustee of Agnes Scott College from 1949 
until her death in 1953. Along with her friends, she funded the 
building of Agnes Scott College's Letitia Pate Evans Dining Hall. 
In her lifetime, she contributed to more than 130 different 
charities.
