Office of Financial Aid Code of Conduct 
In compliance with the requirements of the Higher Education Opportunity Act (H.R.4137) assigned into law 
on August 14, 2008, the following is the Code of Conduct regarding student loans for the Office of Financial 
Aid at Agnes Scott College.  
 Agnes Scott College: 
• Does not require students to use a particular lender or in any way limit the choice of lenders for 
students. 
• Does not recommend external lenders to students or their parents, and does not maintain a list of 
lenders that are preferred over other lenders.  We do provide a list of lenders as possible 
suggestions, which in no way should be recognized as preferring one over another. 
• Process loan applications through any lender a student or parent chooses. 
• Does not solicit or accept anything of value from any lender in exchange for any advantage sought by 
the lender to make educational loans to students enrolled at, or admitted to, the college.  
• Prohibits employees of the financial aid office, or any employee who otherwise has responsibilities 
with respect to educational loans, from taking from any lender any gift worth more than nominal 
value.  
• Prohibits employees of the financial aid office, or any employee who otherwise has responsibilities 
with respect to educational loans, from entering into any type of consulting arrangement or other 
contract to provide to a lender services relating to educational loans.  
• Prohibits employees of the financial aid office, or any employees who otherwise has responsibilities 
with respect to educational loans, who serve on an advisory board (or commission or group) relating 
to educational loans established by a lender or group of lenders from receiving anything of value 
from the lender or group of lenders in connection with serving on such advisory board (or 
commission or group).  
• Prohibits external lenders' employees, representatives, or agents from providing staffing services to 
the financial aid office. 
• Prohibits external lenders' employees, representatives, or agents from identifying themselves to 
students of the college or their parents as employees, representative or agent of the financial aid 
office.  
• Does not assign for any borrower, through award packaging or other methods, a loan to a particular 
lender, and does not refuse to certify or delay certification of any loan based on the borrower's 
selection of a particular lender or guaranty agency.

Join in the Scottie Book Month Celebration in October! 
Back by popular demand, we are inviting 
alumnae and friends all over the country 
to share in the experience of the first- 
year students' common reading. Over the 
summer, all incoming first-year students read 
a book selected by the college and during 
the fall they gather with faculty and staff 
leaders to discuss it in depth. This year's 
book is How to Breathe Underwater, an award- 
winning collection of nine short stories by 
Julie Orringer. 
Scottie Book Month will be celebrated in 
October with alumnae opening their homes 
for conversation, refreshments and a lively 
book discussion facilitated by a special DVD 
presentation with Amber Dermont, associate 
professor of English. We invite you to gather with fellow alumnae in your 
city, continue your own learning and actively participate in the life of the 
college by joining us for Scottie Book Month. Even if you do not find the 
time to read the book, you may enjoy discussing the book and spending 
time with a group of Agnes Scott women.

How to Breathe Underwater by Julie Orringer 
What happens when a young girl accompanies her dying mother to 
Disneyland to meet an old flame? What happens when a teenage girl lives 
a life of hidden talent, mutely existing among mean girls, then gets to 
dance with the first boy she ever loved? What happens when a drug addict 
is asked to babysit her niece? How to Breathe Underwater is a collection of nine 
short stories about girls and women coming of age and coming to terms, 
swimming in the turbulent waters of life and learning, of necessity and 
with surprising grace, how to breathe underwater. 
As novelist Monica Ali has written, "How to Breathe Underwater is unbelievably 
good: the humiliations and cruelties and passions of childhood, sparkling 
fresh prose, a writer with a big heart and an acute sense of the small things 
that loom large in our lives." 
Student, staff and faculty members of the Common Reading Book 
Committee chose How to Breathe Underwater because it represents the kind of 
challenging, thought-provoking book we look for in our Common Reading 
program, which introduces incoming students to the richness, variety and 
excitement of a liberal arts education. 
Tips to Enhance Your Reading Experience 
Amber Dermont, associate professor of English, advises her students to 
read each short story in one sitting in order to have a sustained experience 
and to feel the full impact of the story. We also recommend that alumnae

Julie Orringer is the author of The Invisible 
Bridge, a novel (Knopf, 2010), and How to Breathe 
Underwater, a short story collection (Knopf, 
2003). Her stories have been published in The 
Yale Review, where they've twice been awarded 
the Editors' Prize for best story of the year; the 
Paris Review, which awarded her the Discovery 
Prize in 1998; Ploughshares, which selected her 
work for the Cohen Award for Best Fiction; 
Zoetrope All-Story, which nominated her for a National Magazine Award; and 
by the Washington P-ost Magazine. She is the recipient of two Pushcart Prizes 
and her work has appeared in numerous anthologies, including The Granta 
Book of the American Short Story, The Best American Nonrequired Reading, and The 
Scribner Anthology of American Short Fiction. 
She is a 1996 graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, where she held 
a two-year Creative Writing Teaching Fellowship. She was a Stegner 
Fellow at Stanford from 1999 to 2001, and was Stanford's Marsh McCall 
Lecturer in Fiction from 2001 to 2003. Her short story collection, How to 
Breathe Underwater, won the Joseph Henry Jackson Award and the Northern 
California Book Award; it was a San Francisco Chronicle and LA Times Best 
Book of the Year and a New York Times Notable Book. Stories from the 
collection have been presented on NPR's "Selected Shorts" and BBC Radio 
4, have been read at the Steppenwolf Theater's Stories on Stage, made 
into short films and adapted into full-length plays presented by Word for 
Word Theater Company in San Francisco. The book has been translated 
into Spanish, French, German, Dutch, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, 
Norwegian and Italian. In 2006 it was selected for Stanford's Three Books 
series, which made it required reading for all Stanford first-year students. 
Orringer received a 2004-05 grant from the National Endowment for 
the Arts for The Invisible Bridge. She continued work on the novel with the 
assistance of fellowships from the MacDowell Colony in the summers 
of 2005 and 2006 and from the Corporation of Yaddo in the summer of 
2007; in 2006 she won the Anne and Robert Cowan Writers' Award from 
the Jewish Community Foundation. Orringer has been the Distinguished 
Visiting Writer at St. Mary's College of California and California College 
of the Arts and was the Helen Herzog Zell Visiting Professor of Creative 
Writing at the University of Michigan. In 2008-09 she was the Rona 
Jaffe Foundation Fellow at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for 
Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library, and in the fall of 2009 
she taught at Columbia University. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband,

Program Descriptions 
 
The Environmental Resident Program 
 The Environmental Residents (ERs) are a group of students who have 
been selected to manage the waste diversion efforts and environmental 
programming in Agnes Scott’s resident halls. They offer suggestions and 
support to Residence Life staff on waste diversion issues and are the 
contact for students to ask questions about sustainability efforts on 
campus. They attend larger group meetings to host campus programs to 
promote sustainability as a lifestyle. There is an Executive Chair (or “ER 
Chair”) who acts as the President of the ERs, and heads an executive 
board with a secretary, treasurer, Publicity Chair(s), Community Volunteer 
Chair(s), and Campus Events Chair(s). Active ERs receive priority housing 
for the following year. 
 
The Friends of Environmental Residents Program 
 The Friends of Environmental Residents (FERs) are a group of 
students on campus who are interested in environmental and sustainability 
issues but do not have a commitment to their residence halls. They 
maintain an interest in volunteering, waste diversion projects, and campus 
sustainability through participation in events and programs with the 
Environmental Residents. Underclass FERs in good standing are highly 
encouraged to apply to be an ER for the following year.

Environmental Resident Bylaws 
 
Section 1: Membership 
A. Composition of Environmental Residents 
1. Co-Chairs, Secretary, Treasurer, Publicity Chair(s) (1-2), Campus Events 
Chair(s) (1-2), Community Volunteer Chair(s) (1-2) 
B. Qualifications 
1. Environmental Residents 
i. As seen qualified by the current Sustainability Fellows and the Co-
Chairs to have the most potential in this leadership role through 
their answers to the application and then in the interview. 
ii. Must have interest in helping spread environmental awareness on 
the Agnes Scott campus through different mediums. 
iii. If the applicant is re-applying, they must be in good standing and 
have met the program’s Attendance Policy. 
iv. Priority will be given to Friends of Environmental Residents in good 
standing. 
2. Executive Board 
i. Co-Chair has at least one semester of experience as an 
Environmental Resident at Agnes Scott College. 
ii. Secretary and Treasurer must each have one semester of 
Environmental Resident experience at Agnes Scott College. 
iii. The Publicity, Community Volunteer, and Campus Events Chairs 
must be an Environmental Resident.  
 
Section II: Meetings and Attendance Policy 
A. Meetings 
1. At the first meeting of the academic year, the group will agree on a 
monthly, one-hour meeting time.  
B. Attendance 
1. Environmental Residents are allowed a total of six (6) absences during 
the semester. 
i. Only a maximum of four (4) meetings can be missed per 
academic year. 
ii. Only a maximum of two (2) events can be missed per academic 
year. 
iii. Environmental Residents are required to complete eight (8) 
community service hours per academic year, as approved by 
the Sustainability Fellows.

2. At the second absence, the secretary will give a verbal and written 
warning.  
3. After the second absence, if there is a failure to complete any projects 
or attend any meetings, the ER will be removed from the group and 
will not receive priority housing or status as an ER for the following 
year. The student can rejoin as a FER for the following year.  
4. For special circumstances (i.e. severe sickness, death of a family 
member), Executive Board members can make allowances on a case-
by-case basis. Disputed policies can be appealed to the group.  
 
Section III: Duties and Responsibilities  
A. Projects and Events  
1. Participation is required in all but two events for the academic year.  
B. General Responsibilities  
1. Hallway Duties: Engage and answer any questions that arise in the 
residence halls. 
2. RA Communication: Work with RAs/SRAs of the dorm to further engage 
the students and create an environment in which everyone can learn and 
express opinions.  
3. Support Campus Events and Volunteer Opportunities: Attend campus 
events and off-campus opportunities sponsored by the Office of 
Sustainability and SWAT.  
 
Section IV: Executive Board 
A. Co-Chair 
1. At least one (1) ER will be the Chair. 
2. The job of the Co-Chair is to engage the ER body, so that they, as a 
group, will engage the Agnes Scott campus in sustainability issues that 
impact the college lifestyle. 
i. The Chairs will create the meeting itinerary and will conduct 
meetings. 
ii. The Chairs will meet with the Fellows to create the ER Retreat in 
the fall and they will work with the connection between SWAT and 
Office of Sustainability. 
iii. The Chairs will communicate with the Fellows about any issues that 
arise with the ERs, FERs, or Executive Board and will collaborate on 
a solution to resolve these issues.  
 
B. Secretary

1. The job of the secretary is to keep meeting minutes along with 
attendance at all meetings.  
i. The secretary is in charge of the verbal and written warning at the 
second absence.  
ii. The secretary will also need to send reminder emails for meetings 
two days in advance and the day of the meeting. 
iii. The secretary will keep the meeting minutes and make them 
available to SWAT members upon request.  
C. Treasurer 
1. The job of the treasurer is to maintain the budget for the ERs and to 
update all members on the money spent and how much is left. 
i. The treasurer will help decide whether a proposal is beneficial to 
the ERs and how much should be awarded. 
ii. The treasurer will work with the ER and Fellows in the spring to 
create a budget proposal for the following academic year.  
D. Publicity Chairs 
1. There should be at least one (1) but no more than two (2) Publicity 
Chair(s). 
2. The job of the Publicity Chair is to inform the Agnes Scott campus as well 
as other campuses when an ER event or opportunity is scheduled. 
i. The engagement of the community includes but is not limited to 
banners, posting in Facebook groups, posters, flyers, emails, etc. 
ii. Publicity Chairs will begin advertising for an event no later than 
two (2) weeks prior to an event. 
iii. Publicity Chairs must confirm with the secretary that an event has 
been advertised. 
E. Community Volunteer Chairs 
1. There should be at least one (1) but no more than two (2) Community 
Volunteer Chairs. 
2. The job of the Community Volunteer Chair is to gather participants in 
volunteer service events and work with the Publicity Chair to advertise 
these opportunities.  
i. The Community Volunteer Chairs will be in contact with the Fellow 
about attendance updates for an event. 
ii. The Community Volunteer Chairs are responsible for attending the 
event and taking ER/FER attendance at the event. 
iii. The Community Volunteer Chairs will submit advertising ideas to 
the Publicity Chair at least two and a half weeks before the event 
date.

iv. The Community Volunteer Chairs will look out for opportunities in 
the Decatur area for the ERs/FERs/campus members to participate 
in.  
F. Campus Events Chair 
1. There should be at least one (1) but no more than two (2) Campus Events 
Chairs. 
2. The job of the Campus Events Chair is to coordinate all events and 
programs inclusive of the student body, collaborate with other 
organizations, and work with the Publicity Chair to advertise these events. 
i. The Campus Events Chairs will come up with ideas for campus 
events, such as parties, movie and speaking events, Campus 
Sustainability Day, and Recyclemania. 
ii. The Campus Events Chairs will collaborate with other organizations 
on events and will maintain communication with other 
organizations in planning an event. 
iii. The Campus Events Chairs will attend IOC (Inter-organizational 
Council) meetings. 
iv. The Campus Events Chairs will submit advertising ideas to the 
Publicity Chair at least two and a half weeks prior to the event 
date. 
v. The Campus Events Chairs will submit an EMS form for the event 
no later than two weeks prior to an event. 
vi. The Campus Events Chairs are responsible for attending the event 
and will take SWAT attendance at the event.  
 
Section V: Voting 
A. Definition of Voting Terms 
1. Majority: The majority of a voting body is defined as more than fifty 
percent (50%) of the voters. 
2. Super Majority: The super majority of a voting body is defined as at least 
seventy-five percent (75%) of the voters. 
3. Quorum: The quorum of a voting body is defined as at least three-fourths 
(3/4) of the voting members. 
4. Voting Body: Only active ERs qualify as voting members.  
B. Voting Procedure 
1. There will be one vote at the end of spring semester. 
2. For each position, Co-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Publicity Chair(s), 
Community Volunteer Chair(s), and Campus Events Chair(s), there will be 
one vote per SWAT member.

i. All positions will be labeled and announced via email. Nominations 
will be due by email or at the meeting one month prior to 
elections.  
ii. The secretary/treasurer (whomever is not running for a position) 
will create a SurveyMonkey ballot to submit to SWAT. The Fellow 
will count the votes and submit the results to the Co-
Chair/secretary to be announced to the group. 
iii. Up to two (2) candidates may be elected for the Publicity, 
Community Volunteer, or Campus Events Chair positions. 
iv. The candidates with the highest percentage (%) of votes will 
become a new Co-Chair or Board member.  
v. In case of a tie, the SWAT members will vote to have an extra 
position made or if there is no conclusion, the previous Co-Chairs 
will vote. 
C. Voting Privileges 
1. The Co-Chair shall not have voting privileges. 
2. All SWAT members shall have voting privileges.

Executive Board Member Position Descriptions 
 
I. CO-CHAIR 
 The Co-Chairs act as the “Presidents” of SWAT. (S)he hosts and plans 
monthly meetings for the group and is the head of the Executive 
Board.  
 (S)he acts as the liaison between the Office of Sustainability and the 
F/ERs.  
 (S)he fields questions and helps find solutions for problems with waste 
diversion problems in residence halls across campus.  
II. SECRETARY 
 The Secretary takes meeting minutes and keeps them for SWAT 
members to view as they choose.  
 The Secretary takes attendance at monthly meetings. 
 The Secretary sends reminder emails about meetings and events to 
SWAT in the days prior to an event. 
III. TREASURER 
 The Treasurer manages the SWAT budget; determining how much 
money to allocate for an event. 
 The Treasurer works with the Co-Chairs to submit a budget proposal 
for the following year.  
IV. PUBLICITY CHAIR(S) 
 The Publicity Chair(s) are responsible for advertising all events and 
volunteer opportunities hosted by SWAT, via Facebook, banner, or 
email. 
V. COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER CHAIR(S) 
 The Community Volunteer Chair(s) will plan and coordinate all 
volunteer projects for SWAT, the student body, or campus 
community. They work with the Publicity Chair(s) to advertise the 
event. 
VI. CAMPUS EVENTS CHAIR(S) 
 The Campus Events Chair(s) will coordinate all on-campus events for 
students and will work with the Publicity Chair(s) to gather enthusiasm 
for these programs. 
 They will collaborate with other campus organizations to throw events 
for a wider campus audience and increase visibility to the student 
body.

Graphic Identity Recommendations 
Our brand research corroborated the dynamic we found in our research for the capital campaign: 
Agnes Scott is equally shaped by commitments to honor its past and to remain a leading liberal arts college. 
Finding the balance point between these two pulls demanded that we approach this branding project 
mindful that the process must be an evolution rather than a revolution. 
Sleeker and more modern, the elements of the new design are intended to communicate a strong, clear 
identity in a simple, yet bold way, and thus be a quicker read and to better speak to an evolving and 
dynamic marketplace. 
EXISTING LOGO 
Challenges with the existing logo: 
1. PRACTICAL CHALLENGES 
a. The four-color logo made stationery expensive to produce. 
b. The current icon-the three overlapping Gothic windows-does not reproduce well at small sizes. 
c. Our goal was to create a logo that is bold and recognizable while also being user-friendly and cost-conscious 
2. AES THE TIC CHALLENGES 
a. The four different colors combined with an intricate icon make the overall logo unnecessarily complex. 
b. The current graphic identity, now some fourteen years old, simply needs to be refreshed. 
COLORS 
The new palette comprises colors that provide the college with tremendous latitude in its marketing. We have updated the 
purple, making it deeper and richer while keeping it in the same tonal family. We have also added inviting brown and green tones 
that serve as nice contrast and grounding influence to the rich, vivid purple. Within this 3 color palette, the purple-by virtue of 
its being the only "cool" color within the group-is allowed to project forward and shine. 
Because these colors are viewed differently depending on their context and the viewer, the palette will appeal to both 
traditionalists looking for a classic style and to ASC's quirkier constituents who are looking for a more 
idiosyncratic style. Given the college's desire to attract more full-pay students, and knowing that those students often-but not 
always-come from more tradtional backgrounds, this palette places us firmly in the middle, thus allowing the viewer to use her 
own taste and life experiences to better connect with Agnes Scott. 
The color scheme--bright and warm and energetic-conveys a classic Northeastern style, furthering positioning ASC as one of 
the Seven Sisters and reinforcing its identity as the "Southern Sister."They are tasteful and sophisticated, recalling the campus' 
classical architecture, its academic rigor, and the pride it takes in its legacy. However in other contexts they can easily be given a 
funky, chic, or even vintage feel, which will broaden Agnes Scott's appeal to prospective students. This color palette could just as 
easily be found in a Ralph Lauren or LL Bean catalogue as it would at a vintage clothing shop in Little Five Points. 
Given this flexibility, these new colors capture Agnes Scott's distinctive campus environment-its academic rigor 
and its deep commitment to its legacy, as well as its community where women feel comfortable enough to 
express themselves.

NEW LOGO/WORDMARK OPTIONS 
The serif type on the wordmark also presents a classic image of the college, painting it as a solid, serious institution and recalling 
its heritage. The combination of this classical font style and new color palette allows us to be more things to more people. 
WORDMARK 
The all-caps typeface remains distinctive with the extended crossbar of the G in Agnes and the missing serifs of the T's in "Scott." 
ICONS 
Both symbols are highly abstract, yet they originate from very traditional iconic campus architecture. This abstract style is 
simpler and makes the symbols a quicker/easier read, but it also allows us to project a distinctive image of Agnes Scott as 
progressive while still acknowledging the college's traditional heritage. 
THEWINDOW 
The current symbol comprises three overlapping Gothic windows contained in a circle. The new version takes a minimalist approach 
and uses the mullions as the central feature with just enough of the arched frame to keep the symbol contained. The overall shape also 
forms a highly stylized "W,' which subtly reinforces the tag line--given we continue to use "The World. For Women." 
As with the tower, giving this very traditional iconic element a more unconventional and progressive style, allows 
us to be viewed more positively by more people.

TAG LINES 
THE WORLD. FOR WOMEN. 
Our focus groups e>q)ressed a marked preference for the existing tagline: people feel that "The World for Women" captures 
Agnes Scott's mission and the educational experience women have there. However, we also heard misgivings that the line also 
suggested a cloistered environment, a world (suited) to women, rather than women prepared for the greater world. To address 
these concerns and to broaden the creative opportunities inherent in the line, we simply added two periods. It is a minor change 
with significant implications: "The World. For Women." signals Agnes Scott's global focus, its intentionality in educating women, 
and its dedication to producing graduates with the skills and confidence to pursue their goals. 
WOMEN. LEADERS. 
The second tag line places the focus more squarely on the outcomes of an Agnes Scott education: Agnes Scott produces women 
leaders.Yet this direct message also references the college's commitment to women and women's issues and alludes to its own 
position as a leading voice for women. 
CLEAR VISION. STRONG VOICE. 
This tag line builds on a recurring theme from our qualitative research, viz., the importance placed at Agnes Scott on finding 
one's voice. Vision speaks to Agnes Scott's role as a women's college, how it has adapted throughout history to prepare students 
and the vision they have because of the unique education they have received. 
The result is alumnae who have a strong voice--confident women, unafraid to speak their mind. Further, it could be read as 
Agnes Scott as a voice for women or Agnes Scott as a strong voice in education.
