    All That is Left of Me is You

I discuss our shared interests such as knitting, cooking, and sharing stories while documenting her life story and the life she built for our family in her home. Through this lens, I abstract and amplify the ways in which we as individuals are impacted and influenced by craft, culture, and place-making as a way of creating collective memory. The final artwork, titled All That is Left of Me is You, explores how these types of exchanges shape who we are as individuals through the sharing and embracing of knowledge and personal practice.I use Janet Donohoe’s argument from her book Remembering Places: A Phenomenological Study of the Relationship Between Memory and Place and Jada- Amina Harvey, Noa Hines, and Sebastien Pierre in their writing “Grandmother’s House: The Black Radical Tradition of Collecting” to frame my understanding of the impact of place and personhood on ourselves and those around us throughout our lives. Personal influence is used to establish the final medium of the finished work, a knitted fiber-arts installation, as well as the larger concept that the artwork conveys: the idea of interconnectedness and the creation of networks through exchange. I support the method of the finished artwork All That is Left of Me is You through the writing of David Rosand in his book Drawing Acts: Studies in Graphic Expression and Representation and his understanding of drawing as a way to recognize agency and identity through mark-making and surface design. My creative work All That is Left of Me is You utilizes the medium of knitting as an extension of this large concept, using form, color and display to further support the idea of interconnectedness.Knowledge is shared across relationships and through generations, shaping the ways in which we navigate the world with the skills and awareness that we grow over time through strengthening relationships. All That is Left of Me is You emphasizes the ways in which we are impacted by and impact those around us

In the past several decades, advances in GIS, remote sensing, and satellite imagery have led to a sharp increase in available data for geographical analysis, as well as the sophistication of methods for their analysis. One increasingly attractive method for geographical population estimates is dasymetric mapping, an approach which uses external data to disaggregate existing geographical data into smaller units. Perhaps the most ubiquitous and difficult to remove are those of the smallest sizes: microplastics. While microplastics are well studied in aquatic environments, there is limited research on microplastics in the atmosphere as a source of microplastic pollution. This thesis seeks to conduct the first investigation of atmospheric microplastics in Portland, OR, by testing the presence of microplastics in rainwater and examining the potential relationships between microplastics and industrial and commercial square footage of the area. Research was conducted by collecting and processing rainwater samples from six different sites across five industrial and commercial square footage ranges and quantifying the microplastics visually using staining techniques and a microscope. Results showed that microplastics were present in all the samples collected and therefore present in the atmosphere of Portland. The presence of atmospheric microplastics is supported by findings of comparable research around the world, and the strong correlations between microplastics and industrial and commercial square footage suggest that with further studies, a statistically significant result can be obtained. Atmospheric microplastics are a biological, chemical, and physical threat to ecosystems and humans alike and further research is strongly encouraged in order to minimize the consequences as soon as possible

    Optogenetic Stimulation of Dopaminergic Neurons in the Ventral Tegmental Area Under Anxiety and Reward Related Paradigms

    https://rdc.reed.edu/v1/resources/16082d45-7f4f-49fa-b70f-974594fdfd32/thumb/128.jpgIt is well known that dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a crucial role in reward processing in the brain, and has been implicated in behaviours such as addiction, learning, and memory. However, little is known about how dopamine is involved in the opposing behaviours and responses of reward and fear. This current study attempts to use optogenetics to manipulate dopamine transmission in order to modulate expectation responses in both fear and reward paradigms. Adult transgenic male (TH-Cre) and wild-type (WT) rats received microinjections of a Cre-dependent AAV virus in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and fibre optic implants. They were optogenetically stimulated both in operant conditioning (reward paradigm) and in an elevated plus maze (fear paradigm). Rats learned to lever press for pellets on different variable interval (VI) schedules (VI1/5) and underwent extinction learning during optogenetic stimulation (reward paradigm). Rats also received optogenetic stimulation when spending time in the opened arms of the elevated plus maze (fear paradigm). While an effect was found in the fear paradigm in which stimulation in the opened arms elicited a positive behavioural response, an effect was not observed in the reward paradigm. These results suggest that dopamine operates differently in reward and fear paradigms, and/or stronger associations with reward and dopaminergic stimulation must be made in learning paradigms to elicit a change in behavioural response. These results hold strong implications in clinical settings related to the expectation of fear and reward stimuli and the pathophysiology of PTSD and addiction

    The Spatial Politics of the German Soundscape, 1918-1945

Until recently, most scholarship on this period has focused on the optical, and the visuality of fascism’s “mass ornament.” This account takes a different approach, instead focusing on how sound, and the spaces it traversed, were fashioned into tools of power by varying political communities. I treat sound as historically and culturally contingent, and as bound with the technologies and media that facilitated its production and dissemination. Sounds’ mechanical production and transmission changed both how the modern listener heard and what the heard. Sound was given a new importance as it collapsed cohesive accounts of time and space. Acoustic technologies -- whether loudspeaker, radio, or telephone -- allowed for intimate encounters with both state and nation. Sound became a mode of political control and social organization by competing political entities. In my first chapter, I explore how the acoustic was employed by Communists, Nazis, and the Social Democrats. The Weimar government, led by the Social Democrats, orchestrated mass acoustic spectacles, while the Communists and Nazi engaged in “sonic brawling” to acoustically occupy space. In my second chapter, I discuss the role of acoustic technologies, particularly the radio, in aiding the Nazis musical production and consolidation of political power. My final chapter analyzes the intimately shared temporalities of Nazi radio, as well as the shifting the nature of public and private space as a mode of acoustic discipline and surveillance

    Formal Verification of Key Exchange Protocol Security with Tamarin Prover

We begin with a thorough introduction to Tamarin Prover, covering the major components of a Tamarin model and providing a minimal example to build intuition for protocol specification with rewrite rules. We discuss specifics of writing model code and lemmas, and explore the process of automated theorem proving. We follow this with a discussion of the symmetric and asymmetric settings in cryptography, and the general problem of key exchange. Then, we present a specific, basic instance of a key exchange protocol, and we apply Tamarin to it. Finally, we explain and apply Tamarin to a simplified version of QUIC, a modern key exchange protocol developed by Google

Some are declaring that we’re living in “The Age of AI”. Is all this hype founded in reality? A much less marketable picture shows that AI is much more complicated than portrayed by the mainstream media. Not only is it a vague word encapsulating many types of technologies, but it’s also inextricably tied to the world we live in—a world with racialized and complex political economies that can’t be filtered out of AI algorithms. Much of the discourse around AI centers the human-machine divide and perpetuates an Us vs. the Robot mentality. Instead, discussions around AI should center the heteromation inherent to upholding its economy of appearances. An entire underbelly of underpaid human labor is necessary for AI to appear so intelligent. Discussions that center AI’s own autonomy veil the human labor that goes into AI’s so-called ‘humanness’ and fail to hold human developers accountable. In discussing whether AI can become conscious, human, creative, or intelligent, the ways we conceptualize human-machine relations must be rethought. How can we reimagine human-AI cyborgian relation? Can human vs the machine be replaced with human-with-the-machine or human-as-the- machine? And how does AI art fit into it all? Are artists rightfully concerned about AI’s entrance into the art world

    Dielectric Response of Bulk hBN

    https://rdc.reed.edu/v1/resources/fb3e394d-97f1-4fe9-a633-9396e89f3bd9/thumb/128.jpgWhile hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) mostly debuted in the 2D-materials research world as a substrate and an insulator, it has recently emerged as a material with great potential applications: ranging from nanoelectronics to single photon emission. Some of its noteworthy properties are electric insulation, low dielectric constant, easy synthesis, high-temperature stability, corrosion resistance, and chemical stability. Given this attention, CVD hBN films have started to become commercially available. In this study, we quantify the out-of-plane dielectric constant of CVD hBN films by preparing Metal-Insulator-Metal (MIM) capacitors using thermally evaporated metal deposition. While some methods did not prove to be quite effective in quantifying the dielectric constant conclusively, one successful method involved stacking another dielectric (SiO2) in series with hBN. This method yielded an experimental value of 3.74 ± 0.17. Together these results lead to a deeper understanding of the dielectric response of hBN and of its application in electronic devices
