Nice, Quiet Hand : The Creation and Navigation of Feeling Rules in a Second Grade Classroom
Emotions are largely viewed as individual and internal, but in reality, emotions are socially situated. This project aims to use a sociology of emotions framework in order to explore how emotional expectations are created, maintained, and navigated within a classroom environment. Through a series of observations over the course of a month, I set out to answer questions surrounding which emotions were encouraged, which emotions were discouraged, and how both teachers and students created and navigated these feeling rules. Overall, I found that emotions were largely discouraged, especially through the overarching feeling rules of “be quiet” and “control your body.” Specifically, individual emotions like excitement, anger, frustration, worry, and sadness were commonly discouraged. On the other hand, social emotions such as repentance and compassion were frequently praised. Teachers used a number of strategies to uphold these feeling rules. These strategies ranged from unsupportive of students’ emotional experiences, like threats, to neutral strategies like preventative feeling rule reminders, and finally to positive strategies such as showing empathy and teaching students skills to self-regulate. Students were not passive recipients of these feeling rules; instead, they participated in moments of compliance and resistance, and they used emotions in order to navigate the classroom’s social hierarchy. This project concludes with implications for educators, including recommending greater support for emotional expressions within the classroom and addressing emotions first before controlling behavior
Ethnicity and Education: College Attendance Patterns Among Early 20th-Century Maine\u27s Immigrant Community
I examine the college attendance patterns of second-generation Russian-Jewish immigrants in Maine in the early 20th century relative to other ethnic groups using individual-level Census records. I employ the Abramitzky, Boustan, and Eriksson (ABE) algorithm to track second-generation Jewish, Italian, French Canadian, English Canadian and European immigrants from the 1910 Census to the 1940 Census. My logistic regression analysis indicates that second-generation Jewish immigrants in Maine attended college at significantly higher rates than their peers of similar background in every other ethnic group. While I cannot evaluate them, I also discuss potential explanations for the disparity in college attendance between Jews and other groups
Use of Small Molecule Fanconi Anemia Pathway Inhibitors as Sensitizing Agents to Laromustine.
Laromustine is an experimental chemotherapeutic sulfonyl hydrazine prodrug shown in clinical trials to be effective against acute myeloid leukemia. The mechanism of action of laromustine involves interstrand crosslinking, via chloroethylation, and enzyme inhibition, caused by carbamoylation. The work described herein aims to investigate whether inhibition of the replication-dependent interstrand crosslink repair Fanconi Anemia pathway further sensitizes cells to laromustine. By measuring metabolic activity immediately after drug exposure, we find laromustine to be equally as cytotoxic towards Fanconi Anemia deficient and wild type cells. However, through clonogenic assays we show Fanconi Anemia mutations sensitize cells to laromustine’s anti-proliferative effect. Furthermore, we show curcumin, which has previously been reported as a Fanconi Anemia pathway inhibitor, is able to induce a similar sensitization to laromustine as observed in mutant cells. A similar effect is not observed for another reported inhibitor, pimozide. Further research expanding on these findings could inform combination therapies that could reduce therapeutic dose of laromustine
Contrasting Patterns of Nutrient Limitation in the Littoral and Pelagic Zones of Mesotrophic Maine Lakes
Intense nutrient loading of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) causes sudden regime shifts in freshwater ecosystems from clearwater to turbid conditions with frequent cyanobacterial blooms. Characterization of nutrient limitation patterns of primary productivity in these ecosystems is necessary for effective management of algal blooms. However, much of this research has focused on pelagic habitats. The influence of lake habitat (i.e. benthic littoral versus pelagic zones) on nutrient limitation of primary production in mesotrophic lakes is largely unknown, particularly in contrast to research on pelagic nutrient limitation in eutrophic systems. Using paired nutrient diffusing substrata and mesocosm experiments, we measured chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentrations in response to 4 nutrient treatments (N, P, N + P, Control) to assess nutrient limitation patterns in littoral and pelagic zones of two temperate, mesotrophic lakes in late summer, prior to the fall mixing period (October 2020). While both lakes are mesotrophic, China Lake has approximately 2.18 times higher overall average [chl-a] in the water column than Great Pond in this late stratification period. In the pelagic zone, China Lake phytoplankton are colimited by N and P, while Great Pond phytoplankton are P limited. In the benthic zone, China Lake periphyton are serially limited by N then P, and Great Pond periphyton are N limited. These data will improve our understanding of nutrient limitation patterns in mesotrophic systems in danger of eutrophication and allow us to incorporate littoral zone production into our understanding of whole lake ecosystem productivity
