Masterpiece 
Adrienne Kaplowitz ’21, a psychology and studio art 
double major, and Esther Bo Kim ’21, who is majoring in 
government, ponder Jackson Pollock’s Composition with 
Masked Forms, a recent and major acquisition by the Colby 
College Museum of Art. The painting is critical in that 
it reflects a watershed moment in Pollock’s transition to 
Abstract Expressionism. First available for viewing July 
11, it also is the first major work by the artist in a public 
collection in Maine. Held in a private collection since 1973, 
the painting anticipates Pollock’s drip paintings, which he 
began in 1947.

journalism. Plunkett eventually resigned from his position and 
continues to be a vocal defender of local journalism in the face 
of newspaper buyouts and downsizing.

who last year conducted more than 400 applicant interviews and represented Colby 
at college fairs around the world. This year every admitted student will also receive a 
personal letter from an alumni volunteer. “These are very significant interactions for 
applicants,” said Assistant Director of Admissions Sam Pelletier ’09. There’s a need for

ART AND IMMIGRATION
More than 70 organizations across 
Maine jumped at the chance to take 
part in an exploration of one the most 
hotly debated issues of our time—
immigration. Making Migration Visible: 
Traces, Tracks & Pathways is a three-
month series of events and exhibitions 
organized by Catherine Besteman, the 
Francis F. Bartlett and Ruth K. Bartlett 
Professor of Anthropology at Colby, and 
Julie Poitras Santos, assistant professor 
at the Maine College of Art. “People 
want to find ways to talk about it that 
exist outside of ‘Are immigrants good or 
bad?’” Besteman said.
GAME, SET, MATCH
Scott Altmeyer ’20 beat NESCAC rivals 
from Bowdoin and Amherst to win the 
“A” Flight at the Wallace Invitational at 
Bates College Oct. 7. Altmeyer won 6-2, 
6-2 in the semifinal and 6-3, 5-7, (10-5) 
in the final. “I felt like my backhand was 
a real weapon this weekend, especially 
when things got tight,” he said. Heading 
into spring season with high expectations 
Altmeyer said, “This weekend was a 
major confidence boost for both me  
and the team. As a group, we showed  
we could be competitive with some of  
the strongest teams in the conference  
and country.”

Squirrels 
and Mules
These California ground squirrels 
have been getting some 
good Colby time in recent 
months. The squirrels are 
the subject of an intensive 
long-term study headed 
up by Jennifer Smith 
’98, associate professor 
of biology at Mills 
College. Last summer 
Carolyn Kwak ’19 
joined the research 
team, bringing things full 
circle. And the squirrels? 
The study revealed that they 
have defined social groups below 
ground and stick to those groups 
when they leave their burrow systems. And the most 
socially connected squirrels in the burrows have the same 
status above ground. The conclusions have implications for 
public health as squirrels, while cute, may carry diseases, 
including plague. The most social individuals may act as 
“hot spots” for disease transmission, Smith’s study found. 
Kwak’s research opportunity was made possible through 
the Russ Cole Research Fellows Program, established 
to honor Cole, who retired in 2016 as Oak Professor of 
Biological Sciences. Cole was Smith’s mentor at Colby and 
inspired her to become a behavioral ecologist. Kwak was 
one of Cole’s advisees during his last year.
LAX RISES TO  
DEMPSEY CHALLENGE 
The men’s and women’s lacrosse teams raised nearly 
$15,000 for the 10th annual Dempsey Challenge, an 
annual fundraiser established by actor Patrick Dempsey 
for individual and families affected by cancer. The teams 
compete with Bates and Bowdoin to raise the most money, 
and the Mules won the College Cup for the third straight 
year in Lewiston, Maine, in September. The teams were 
given the trophy by Dempsey, who wears a Colby hat in 
the front row of the photo.

WATCH THE BIRDS
Noticing how birds’ arrival times shift 
each spring is one way to assess climate 
change, says Herb Wilson, the Leslie 
Brainerd Arey Professor of Biosciences, 
in an article in Popular Science in 
September. Birds, which move when 
conditions will allow their survival, 
and not according to a calendar, “are 
sensitive sentinels of climate change.”
DEEP DIVE FOR TUNA
Loren McClenachan, the Elizabeth and Lee 
Ainslie Assistant Professor of Environmental 
Studies, and her colleagues at the Monterey 
Bay Aquarium received a $46,000 grant from 
NOAA’s Bluefin Tuna Research Program. 
The project, which involved several Colby 
students, including Duncan Coles ’19 and 
Sara Pipernos ’19, involves collection of 
documents from historical archives for 
western Atlantic bluefin tuna. Extending 
data back in time is expected to allow for 
better management of one of the world’s most 
valuable and iconic fisheries.
CONSIDER THE 
NOOSPHERE 
That’s the two meters just above the 
earth’s surface, and it’s the narrow 
atmospheric zone where all decisions in 
human history have been made, says James 
Fleming, the Charles A. Dana Professor 
of Science, Technology, and Society (See 
P. 52). Presenting at a conference in Paris, 
Fleming said Earth is unique in that it is 
the only planet in the known universe to 
have such a layer, one where the future of 
the planet will be decided. 
SWISHER, 1927-2018
John “Swisher” Mitchell, beloved by generations of Colby men’s 
basketball players as a coach and friend, died July 25. Mitchell was 
assistant coach for 44 years, retiring with his good friend, former 
head coach Dick Whitmore, but remaining a presence in his 
players’ lives. To Mainers Mitchell was known as a member of the 
1944 New England champion Waterville High School team. To 
Colby men’s basketball, he was a stalwart friend.

the Board of Trustees. These corporate trustees will

Miguel Leff ’98, born and raised in 
Mexico City, established his own private 
law practice, The Law Office of Miguel 
Leff, in La Jolla, Calif., in 2006 after 
working for law firms in New York,  
Los Angles, and Mexico City. 
Chip Smith ’91 is an executive vice 
president  at 21st Century Fox, where  
he is head of global public affairs and 
leads the company’s public affairs,  
policy, government relations, and 
advocacy functions. 
Laura Ward P’19, ’22, a researcher and 
consultant in the Neurobiology of Fear 
and Dissociative Disorders/Trauma 
Research Laboratories at McLean 
Hospital in Belmont, Mass., focuses 
on trauma-informed care and patient-
centered outcomes research
These alumni trustees will serve three-year terms:
Nancy Donahue Cyker ’88, P’18, 
of Boston, has been involved with 
fundraising for the U.S. Ski and 
Snowboard Association and with the ID 
One Foundation. She volunteered for 
Colby as class correspondent and was a  
 member of her class’s 25th and 30th  
  reunion planning committees.
Coy Dailey ’01 is director of diversity 
and equity at the Bank Street School for 
Children in New York City. Previously, 
he taught mathematics at the Packer 
Collegiate Institute, where he was also 
diversity coordinator and middle school 
dean of student life.

Standardized test scores are now optional for applicants to Colby. 
The move, announced Sept. 24, was made for several reasons, 
College officials said, including the limited ability of standardized 
tests to assess the intellectual attributes that Colby values and are 
essential in an innovation economy; that the tests place students 
from under-resourced backgrounds at a disadvantage; and that 
Colby’s own research and national studies show that the tests 
have only modest predictive powers for success in college.

The estimated number of people who gathered 
for the annual Taste of Waterville Aug. 8. Food 
vendors and entertainers lined Main Street 
as diners converged on the downtown for 
everything from fly-casting lessons to live music 
to puppet theater. With an ongoing Colby-backed 
revitalization project (See P. 18), the city has 
seen a surge in business openings and downtown 
activity, according to the Mid-Maine Chamber of 
Commerce, which sponsors this event.

The number of pounds of structural steel to be 
ultimately used in the 350,000-square-foot athletic 
complex under construction. This photo, taken during 
Homecoming Weekend, shows the indoor competition 
center (blue roof) and the hockey rink (green roof) 
taking shape. The sloped base of the 50-meter pool can

center. The complex, slated to open by fall 2020, will

Colby alumni impact  
the world in many  
ways every day. 
In our “Good Works” section,  
we introduce you to alumni who  
are using their Colby education to  
make a difference in their communities.
On Josephine Liang’s first day at UWC Mahindra College in India, she opened the school handbook to find a statistic on the first page that would stick 
with her for more than a decade. The cost of one semester at 
UWC, the handbook explained, could fund the education of 
40 school children in the local area. 
In other words, Liang knew that her education at UWC, and later as a 
Davis Scholar at Colby, came with responsibility.
With that handbook statistic still in mind, Liang ’14 eventually started 
DayOld Eats, an organization that seeks to reduce food waste and 
food poverty— and in the process make education more attainable for 
low-income children in greater London. She is part of a growing trend 
of food redistribution across the UK and the British Isles, seeking to 
remedy the estimated 10 million tons of food and drink wasted in the 
UK each year.
She and her business partner, London local Michael Scott, lead a team 
of 360 volunteers that collects day-old but still delectable treats from 
large and small bakeries around London (which would otherwise have 
to pay to dispose of their excess goods). Within 24 hours, DayOld Eats 
repackages those baked goods and sells them to startups, or uses them to 
cater meetings for large offices.
The proceeds go directly to Magic Breakfast, an organization that 
fights food poverty by distributing a nutritious breakfast to kids who are 
receiving free lunch in area schools—with more than half of children 
qualifying in the city’s more impoverished boroughs. “It’s a little like 
Robin Hood,” Liang said.

She works out of coworker spaces in Tottenham and East 
London. As bankers and business people ducked in and out 
of black taxis on Christopher Street, Liang traced—over 
tea and, yes, day-old pastries— the events that followed the 
epiphany prompted by the UWC handbook.
A Colby course in health psychology started her thinking 
about the deeper impacts of food poverty. The course 
showed the correlation between 
food behavior and self-control, 
showing a connection between 
a restricted diet and reckless 
behaviors unrelated to food, like 
failing to use a condom. “That was 
the beginning of my interest in 
people’s relationships with food. It 
opened my eyes,” she said. 
Liang, who was raised in Hong 
Kong, was affected in a similar 
way on her semester abroad in 
Copenhagen by an unexpected 
custom: dumpster diving. Unlike 
the United States, where retrieving 
food from the trash would be 
viewed as an extreme consequence of poverty, those in 
Copenhagen had a different perspective. “It was the cool 
thing to do,” Liang said. “You’d go in, take the whole bag, 
and everyone had a party with the pastries we couldn’t 
afford otherwise.”
Even then, she envisioned a nonprofit that would create a 
less wasteful food chain.
Liang majored in psychology at Colby, with a chemistry 
minor. She went on to earn a master’s degree in global 
health science at Oxford, followed by a fellowship with 
Year Here, a London-based platform for graduates to find 
solutions to some of the city’s toughest social problems. 
DayOld Eats was born.
The organization is now working 
on another program based on the 
popular—but typically expensive—
recipe-box trend in the United States. 
Liang works directly with the Camden 
Council in London to develop recipe 
boxes filled with surplus or imperfect 
produce and ingredients from local 
farmers. DayOld Eats is collaborating 
with local cooking groups to find 
delicious family recipes, like curries and 
pasta dishes—the ingredients for which 
will fill each recipe box. The recipes are 
then tweaked by a nutritionist to be as 
healthy and adaptable as possible, and 
the boxes themselves will be designed by 200 children in a 
pilot program.
“I won’t say it’s not hard work,” Liang said of her role as one 
of two employees at DayOld Eats. “Colby gave me a great 
education, so I’m not worried about finding a job. But this is 
a choice. It’s about doing what you think is meaningful.”

Thanks for Postscript to a Father’s Story 
When my father, William Crowther ’47, 
passed away last year at age 94, I 
contacted Colby to have his obituary 
published in Colby Magazine. Though I 
only expected Colby to be receptive to 
a routine set of facts about my father’s 
life, what occurred instead was an 
incredibly heart-warming exchange 
with Colby’s Associate Director of 
Communications Laura Meader.
Laura welcomed info about my father as 
well as photos taken of him during his 
two stints at Colby. He’d entered Colby 
as a member of the Class of ’45 but 
halfway through, when WWII began, 
he enlisted in the Navy. After serving 
in the Pacific, he returned to Colby on 
the G.I. Bill and graduated as a member 
of the Class of ’47— he even gave the 
Senior Day farewell address.
After learning the above, Laura checked 
the Colby archives in hopes she’d 
uncover something there about my 
father. What she found blew me away.
In his file was a photo of my father 
in his Navy uniform sitting with two 
Colby classmates, one of whom was 
also wearing a Navy uniform. The file 
also contained a note written by my 
dad informing Colby of his change 
of address from one Navy base to 
another—it also mentioned that he was 
looking forward to receiving the next 
issue of the “Alumnus” (Colby Magazine 
today).
My family had never seen these items 
before so it felt to all of us as if my dad 
had somehow guided Laura to make 
these two wonderful, posthumous 
discoveries. But then Laura took it one 
step further.
Prior to the Spring 2019 publication 
of Colby Magazine, unbeknownst to us, 
Laura discovered that the other student 
dressed in Navy blues in the photo, 
Calvin Dolan ’47, had also recently 
passed away.
In what she called “a fitting tribute to a 
friendship begun at Colby,” she noted 
their two obituaries were published in 
the same issue of Colby Magazine, and 
she also published a small, additional, 
online piece about them. The online 
article linked Carl and my dad together 
at Colby in ways that my family had 
known nothing about before. Both the 
magazine and the link to the online 
story arrived just after Father’s Day. In 
a wonderfully poignant way, it felt like 
I’d just received a letter from dad—my 
first Father’s Day without him.
Among my father’s proudest moments 
was when his oldest grandson, James 
F. Manning, graduated from Colby in

Dad’s ever-present pride in Colby was 
well placed. He would have been so 
humbled by the caring way in which his 
alma mater recognized him in the end. 
That recognition also meant so much to

Baiting Professor Benbow
Those footsteps you hear late at night 
while you are editing the next Colby 
Magazine might be the ghost of our 
beloved former English Professor R. 
Mark Benbow, whom you mentioned in 
the Spring Colby Magazine, and in which 
edition you allowed a major editorial 
“Oops!” to get past your “eagle-sighted 
eye” (Love’s Labour’s Lost). Professor 
Benbow would not have called it an 
“Oops,” but he would have called it to 
your attention in his signature bold red-
ink marginal comments: To wit: In your

Watson Fellowship to explore the 
relationship between food and running, 
you note that “there are those of us 
out here waiting with baited [vs. bated] 
breath.” (Freudian slip?)
Those of us who remember Professor 
Benbow’s dry sense of humor (and non-
Freudian analyses) can imagine him 
laughing—okay, maybe smirking—at 
such “oops” moments before he lowered 
the boom and made us better students. 
After all, his favorite quotation was, 
“I must be cruel only to be kind” 
(Hamlet). He still might have given you 
an A. Minus.

A Late Night, Working at Home
What a great issue—but you are killing 
me. I work at home on Fridays and I 
shot most of the afternoon reading this 
new issue of Colby Magazine cover to 
cover (albeit not in that order). Now I 
will have to work later to make up for 
that time. To help me in the future, 
please arrange for delivery on Monday 
through Thursday.
Just kidding, of course, about 
the delivery but the rest is true.

On Good and Evil
Regarding “A Better Way,” (Spring 
2019 Colby Magazine), I went abroad 
to hopefully make a difference, but 
learned hard lessons. There is a 
regressive gene in humans, which 
makes evil as prevalent as good. GOOD 
is illustrated with these two folks [Alane 
O’Connor ’96 and Associate Professor 
of Statistics Liam O’Brien].

A Shout-out for Dawn Strout
Say it ain’t so. Dawn Strout is no longer 
here as an athletic trainer? 
Each fall since her arrival she has been 
here to cheer me on in my meager 
attempts at keeping fit. Her smile, her 
approach to fitness and workouts, her 
concern for the well-being of the whole 
person made her a valuable asset to the 
Colby community, whether you were a 
true athlete or just a wannabe like me.
I, and all female faculty and students, 
benefited over the years from her 
transformation of a testosterone-
filled weight room to one that was 
welcoming to us at all times of the 
day. The importance of that change in 
atmosphere can’t be overstated.  
Please tell me that legacy will endure 
with her departure.

for your fantastic work, Steve Nicholas! I 
hope that Colby College and its students 
and alums will also learn about the huge 
effect that animal agriculture has on 
climate disruption. Livestock and their 
byproducts account for at least 32,000 
million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per 
year, or 51% of all worldwide greenhouse 
gas emissions (Worldwatch report by 
Goodland + Anhang, 2009). We have 
amazing potential for positive impact just 
by switching to a plant-based diet.

Broadway,” Fall 2019: 
Kristin KM Congrats!! I saw this in 
Williamstown and again a few weeks 
ago in NY, without realizing the Colby 
connection - Will, and everything about

July 13, 2019, in the middle of what was later known as 
the hottest July on record in Alaska, the temperature 
reached over 90 degrees for the first time in history. 
One can get the sense of “baked Alaska” by standing on 
ice and feeling sweaty, with the mostly clear sky hazy 
from the smoke of a roaring wildfire. For the past 30 
years, Matanuska glacier has receded from where this 
picture was taken to its current position. Due to high 
temperatures, the glacier is melting at a dramatic rate, 
filling up the flooded puddles on the moraine field every 
single day.
