Morphological Variance in Mouthparts and Foraging Behavior in Bumblebees

Bumblebees (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Bombus) show an incredible degree of size variation within and between species. Individuals from the same hive may vary up to 10-fold in mass. This variation allows individuals to specialize in foraging on different flowers suited to their morphology. However, as different species have different foraging behaviors, their variation in mouthparts and scaling of mouthparts to body size may have been under different kinds of stabilizing selection as they adapted to collect nectar from flowering plants over evolutionary time. Here, we examined the scaling relationships between body size and mouthpart structures, and the variation in mouthpart shape between species to determine whether there is any relationship to foraging behavior. In addition, the wings were also analyzed as a reference trait to compare the trends seen in the mouthparts to. We sampled 8 bumblebee species throughout Maine, a region of high bumblebee species diversity, biogeographic variation, and diverse land-use histories. Variation in the size and shape of mouthparts was analyzed for each species using multivariate morphometric analyses to identify species and caste differences. Landmark based geometric morphometrics was used to study the wings. Our results indicate that there is significant correlation between morphological variance in mouthparts and foraging specialization in bumblebees. Specialist bumblebees such as B.ternarius and B.terricola have shallower scaling of tongue lengths to body size and lower variation in mouthpart shape than generalist species such as B.bimaculatus, B.impatiens, and B.vagans. Overall, these patterns support the hypothesis that different bumblebee species with different pollination strategies were under different stabilizing selection to result in different mouthpart morphology

Analysis of Interactions in a Synchronous Hybrid English Class

    Get PDF
Interaction plays an essential role in teaching and learning, whether in face-to-face, online, or blended-hybrid settings (Anderson, 2003; Smith & Kurthen, 2007). While hybrid learning has gained in popularity since the COVID emergency, the discourse nature of hybrid classrooms remains less explored. Current literature mainly focuses on the discourse analysis of hybrid interactions in higher education. However, there is limited research in the context of synchronous hybrid instruction for young English language learners (Lin et al., 2017)

    A Football Odyssey

More than 25 years ago, the former Colby linebacker rushed to a bench between the locker room and the field before every Mules practice. He was the first one there each day, ensuring every teammate would have to walk past as he shouted. “‘What a great day to practice! This is gonna be an awesome practice!’” DeCosta, 48, recalls saying

Welcome to Broadway: The Sound Inside costar Will Hochman ’14 talks about chasing your dream—and ending up on stage with Mary-Louise Parker

Will Hochman ’14 made his Broadway debut last month in the New York Times critic’s pick The Sound Inside with Tony Award-winning co-star Mary-Louise Parker. Hochman first appeared in the two-person play, about the relationship between a Yale creative writing professor and her student, last year at the Williamstown Theatre Festival. Freelance journalist Abukar Adan ’17 sat down with Hochman in his dressing room at Studio 54 to discuss his debut, his time at Colby, and his journey to the big stage

Increasing Police Accountability to the Citizens it Serves: The Production of High-Quality Public Services Through Bottom-Up Governance

    Get PDF
In light of the recent protests against police brutality, we have witnessed overall patterns of dissatisfaction in public opinion with the current state of policing, exacerbated by an inability to produce widespread and substantial police reform. This perplexing issue is the result of increased reliance on top-down regulation, which relies upon the assumption that the users of police services do not directly contribute to the quality of the service produced. As a consequence, there is a general lack of avenues for citizen participation, or bottom-up governance, to effectively channel public opinion towards creating substantive changes within police departments. Constructing a dataset and two variables, bottom-up governance and satisfaction, I run OLS regressions to test whether an increase in bottom-up governance leads to increased citizen satisfaction with the local police department. I find that an increase in bottom- up governance does in fact lead to higher levels of citizen satisfaction. These findings have significant implications that extend far beyond policing and can be applied to the production of all local public goods and services, not only public safety

Ganar Local: La política cantera del Athletic Club y la construcción de lo vasco

    No full text
