    Expanding long-term thinking through life-centred design

    In this exploratory paper, we draw from a series of participatory design experiments to reflect on the impact of life-centred design approaches on long-term thinking. We conceptualise long-term thinking according to three components: 1) Thinking through diverse perspectives, 2) enhancing futures imagination, and 3) challenging anticipatory assumptions. Long-term thinking is increasingly recognised as invaluable in urban regeneration projects, however, to date, knowledge on how to nurture long-term thinking remains sparse

    Rede Refugia: mutuality and collaboration for the integration of different stakeholders in the refugee crisis

    The Rede Refugia is a collaborative service that proposes facilitating the reception, protection and integration of refugees, asylum seekers and stateless persons (hereafter only called refugees). The service is based on mutuality and collaboration among refugees, humanitarian organisations, private entities and other stakeholders operating in the humanitarian ecosystem. The paper aims to discuss how Service Design facilitates the process of co-creation and co-design of a refugee integration ecosystem with different stakeholders. As for the methodology, the research considers Design Science Research (DSR), focusing on the demonstration and evaluation steps. This research contributes with the description of the co-creation and co-design process among different stakeholders in the context of the humanitarian refugee crisis based on mutuality and collaboration, materialising the idea in the Rede Refugia. More precisely, the results indicate the ease in understanding the service objectives, positive expectations of the Rede Refugia service, and some points that must be adjusted. The research also reinforced the importance of the usability test as a fundamental moment for co-design with potential users of services. Future research might consider investigating other tools that can contribute to co-design and co-creation and its contribution to fostering the relational and socio-environmental impacts of collaborative services

    Italian Language Resources. From CLARIN-IT to the VLO and Back: Sketching a Methodology for Monitoring LRs Visibility

    This paper sketches a user-oriented, qualitative methodology for both (i) monitoring the existence and availability of language resources relevant for a given CLARIN national community and language and (ii) assessing the offering potential of CLARIN, in terms of Language Resources provided to national consortia. From the user perspective, the methodology has been applied to investigate the visibility of language resources available for Italian within the CLARIN central services, in particular the Virtual Language Observatory. As a proof-of-concept, the methodology has been tested on the resources available through the CLARIN-IT data centres, but, ideally, it could be applied by any national data centre aiming to assess the existence of LRs in CLARIN for any given languages and check their accessibility for the interested users. It is thus argued that such an assessment might be a useful instrument in the hands of national coordinators and centre managers for (i) bringing to the fore both strengths and critical issues about their data providing community and (ii) for planning targeted actions to improve and increase both visibility and accessibility of their LRs

    The Interaction of Personal Data, Intellectual Property and Freedom of Expression in the Context of Language Research

    Language researchers are usually aware of intellectual property and personal data (PD) requirements. The problem, however, arises when these two legal regimes have conflicting requirements. For instance, when copyright law requires the acknowledgement of the author, but personal data law enshrines the data mini-misation principle. It is a practical question for a language researcher whether he should name the author of the text used for, e.g., building a language model, or follow the data minimisation principle not to name the author. The access right that a data subject has introduces similar conflicts. The question is what the scope of the access right is. Does it cover only processed personal data, or does it extend to data derived from PD? The interaction of the freedom of expression with PD protection entails several problems. The question is whether researchers can publish their research results containing personal data. The General Data Protection Regulation establishes a general framework that needs to be implemented by EU member states. We analyse different implementations based on examples from several EU countries

    Towards Modeling and Simulation of Dynamic Overconstrained Connectors in Modelica

    Cyber-Physical Systems are ever-increasing in complexity and new methods and tools for developing them are needed. To support these highly dynamic systems, increasing the flexibility of the modeling languages is desirable. This paper proposes and examines a Modelica language extension to support dynamic overconstrained graphs with reconfiguration at runtime. Two applications of this new feature are also discussed: synchronous AC power systems and incompressible fluid networks. Reported findings suggest that supporting dynamic overconstrained graphs might yield performance benefits and provide the possibility of simulating systems that can not currently be simulated in existing Modelica tools

    Advanced Model-based Control of B36:45 LNG Engines

    The framework of model predictive control is used in this paper to optimally control the operation of an B36:45 LNG engine. The model of the engine is based on real life data from an installed B36:45 gas engine in a power plant. Stored data from the plant was used to develop a state space model of the process consisting of 2 manipulatable variables, 3 measured disturbances and 6 measured outputs. The goal is to use global ignition timing and the charge air pressure as control variables to minimize the heat rate while considering constraints on the measured outputs. Heat rate of the engine is directly related to engine performance efficiency. Results show that a model based controller has the potential to be used as an advanced controller for optimal operation of this engine

    MPC Operation with improved Optimal Control Problem at Dalsfoss Power Plant.

    The operational conditions at the Dalsfoss power station are complicated due to many requirements such as environmental regulations and safety constraints. Model predictive control (MPC) has been in use at this power station to control the floodgates at the Dalsfoss dam. However, the current formulation of MPC at the power plant does not have routines to explicitly handle output constraints. In this paper, a new improved optimal control problem (OCP) is formulated for the operation of the flood gates at the Dalsfoss power station. This new OCP formulation is thought to be relatively easier for the operators to understand and it is more flexible to the violation of constraints. The aim of this paper is to extend the current MPC used at the power plant so that the output constraints are systematically included in the new improved MPC formulation. Two alternatives are presented and their robustness to an uncertain disturbance is analyzed through robustness analysis
